Hopefully the Gehrke Experiment is Over

The kid just cannot throw the ball with any sort of accuracy. We would have still lost if Sefo had played the first half, but at least our offense would not have looked as inept as it did while Gehrke was in. If his dad thinks he should transfer and play elsewhere, be my guest. He should not come off of the bench after this year.

And that was known well before today......

The kid just got his first start on the road against a national championship contender. He played like it. I personally believe sefo is the best qb on the roster but gehrke will learn from this and hopefully he will keep working and improve. We need depth and competition at all positions.

Gehrke didn't cost us this game. Our defense is a wreck.

Agree on the D being a wreck. But, Jordan is a horrible QB. Every time he has come in his eyes are huge, he has not touch, cannot hit the broad side of a barn except for a RB on a screen. He held the ball too long, was sliding when he had 2 yards to get a first down when he ran. The only improvement was in TOs and he should have had 2 ints.

Let's get thru this season and hope Aspay or Montez can provide the competition because if it is Gehrke, we better not have the starter go down. He should not see the field again.

Great move by the coaches starting Gehrke IMO. Had Sefo played the whole game and we lose 44-21 (giving the offense two more TDs) people would be calling for Sefo to sit. Now, all of Buff nation is solidly behind Sefo heading into the Utah game. And Gehrke can't say he didn't get a shot, he did and he air balled hard.

^this^ smart move IMO by Mac. Sit Sefo to prove a point on turnovers in a game we have no shot in. If Gerk looks good we have a competition going into next year, if he sucks the fans shut their yap.

Well suck would be a complement for that performance. I know it's his 1st start on the road but holy crap I have not seen QB play that horrific since Bernard Jackson. To be fair Sefo's 1st playing time was also on the road and as a true freshman and he was miles ahead of Gerk.

Sefo may not be the guy to take us back to the promise land but now it is very clear that he is the best QB option on the roster this season.

So what was today about?

Was Sefo being punished for something? He obviously wasn't hurt, or he wouldn't have played in the 2nd half.

And it obviously wasn't to find out what Gehrke can do - or he would have played the whole game.

The coaches seem to be in the mode to just throw **** at the wall and see if any of it sticks.

Experience for Gehrke and maybe just to see what he could do. No harm done really. We were gonna lose this game anyway.

Sefo is the starter for 2015/2016 by default. Allsome.
I have this faint hope that Sefo takes major strides in ball sercurity or Apsay is the real deal. Either way, we don't look good going into the 2015 season at this position.

I think there could be three things done yesterday.

1. Let UO tee off on JG instead of Sefo while the game is close. This lets fans see how JG fairs under pressure. Could create competition if he does well, could shut up yappy halo Dads and fans if he doesn't.

2. Also shows the team that if you make mistakes over and over the coaches will let someone else get a chance. Nothing is given without earning it. Which leads to...

3. Shows possible higher level recruits that Sefo is NOT the set starter for the next two years. He can be benched if he makes many mistakes. Also shows he was played because.....well..... we got nothing in the pipeline. Think there are two QBs in particular they are sending a message to. Maybe just reassures Montez not to look around, but think Sherrard and Chason are more likely the ones they wanted to send the message to. And with this a sure loss, why not?

I think the coaches wanted to know what they had for sure with Gehrke. Perhaps it advertises to our potential recruits that there is an opportunity behind Sefo. Who will not be here forever.

If I were a Gehrke supporter, I'd argue that it was unfair to give him his first start against Oregon. That's what I'd argue IF I were a Gehrke guy.

My favorite part of this thread is everyone already looking past Aspay to a recruit who has not signed a LOI yeft

Why? Oregon's defense is no where near the best in the conference. Gehrke had a primo chance to make a statement in front of a national audience to prove why he should be the starter.

This. Oregon ranked #107 in the nation in yards allowed per game. Gehrke had an opportunity and froze.

Why would I argue that if I were a Gehrke guy? Because I'd be looking for excuses. I agree with you on Oregon's D. (Which is why I'm mad Sefo didn't start, BTW.) I just figure Mac is now in the process of setting things up for next year and needs to see Gehrke in real game mode.

You could be right. I choose to believe that the coaches elected to send a strong signal to the team about ball protection. If Lindsey gets benched for coughing up a couple of fumbles in a game, but the QB still gets to start after 4 interceptions, then there is an unhealthy double-standard. By benching Sefo after the sloppy ball protection in Arizona, it promotes a culture of accountability for Sefo to realize there are consequences, while also bestowing trust in Gehrke as the next-man-up.

Aspay ain't the real deal... he was the towel boy before he was a back up QB for the buffs.
