I'm fired up about this year's team

They need to come together.

But the firepower is there.

More importantly, there seems to be a will to overcome and commitment to defense that's been missing.

It's early, but the attitude is kind of reminding me of Nate's senior year.

My dad, who doesn't follow the team but came tonight, was shocked when I told him that our starting 3 (Schwartz) was out tonight and that Namon & Siewert were our 6th & 7th men on this team. That's a ton of firepower.

Think about that for a second. Assume this gels and we've got a starting 5 of Kin-Gatlng-Schwartz-Bey-Batty with Namon and Lucas the first two guys off the bench. That's a team that can score with anyone.

Now that was a fun game to watch. They were losing the guy on the left wing through the rotation, at times. Gatling is going to be a handful. I was glad to see Battey on the court.

Regret is a futile waste of time and anguish....BUT, what if Walton were healthy, oh man! 2 years in a row of losing your Big, and you don't hear Tad making excuses.

Lucas is gonna start over Battey if you ask me. Both are horrible at D, but Lucas brings just a touch more on offense right now to earn the nod.

Battey looked sneaky on D, I saw him poke a couple balls and look long in the post last night.

Battey can move his feet and doesn't give deep post position. He's much better than Lucas on D.

Siewert's offensive game is definitely more developed than Battey's.

As Tad says, it doesn't matter who starts. What matters is who finishes. Namon came off the bench but played so well he got 29 minutes last night. The great thing with this team is that we can be confident that we've got 7 guys who can earn 25+ minutes in a game.

That's an exciting backcourt.

EB is decent with "on ball" defense but really struggles tracking and locating his responsibility otherwise. He was a step behind his guy last night playing "off the ball" defense, and that is scary, given this is one of the least athletic teams we will play. I'm hoping this is something that gets ironed out as he knocks the rust off.

I will take it any time that we score 100 and win. Looking forward to having Brown and Schwartz back on Friday. We could have used their experience early in the game when we were struggling. The freshman guards were both much better than I was expecting. Glad to see Namon Wright focused and having a great game.

More on Deleon.... after the game, Tad said he and Deleon are good and that Deleon WILL play on Friday. I'm not sure how good our depth is at this point, but both frosh are promising, and we know Deleon plays solid D. So we do have depth. I really liked Kountz, he wasn't scared to try and make a play. Let's hope Scwhartz gets there.

Battey is a player. My fear is that PAC12 refs will call those pokes fouls even if they aren't. He is also so big and strong that PAC12 officials may call him when guys bounce off him.

It will be important to figure out how to keep him on the floor instead of out due to fouls.

I was surprised at the time given to Strating. He works hard, especially on defense. I don't know why he calls for the ball on offense, though.

Tad really likes him and made mention of him in his presser. He's hoping to redshirt Dombek and talked to him about that yesterday. The key to being able to do that is Strating being able to give quality, high-energy glue guy minutes as a front court sub.

Since I don't pay attention to teams like San Diego, Portland, New Mexico, or even CSU, what is a realistic prediction for us going into conference play?

I liked what I saw for the most part the other day, but I don't think Drake is anything special.

CSU hired the Drake HC and his entire staff away this offseason. That is the team he built.

The game besides our tournament that should tell us the most in the non-conference are the road trips to San Diego and New Mexico. Quality, well-coached squads and the struggles our Buffs have had on the road in recent years. Get wins and I'll become very confident about this season.

Looking forward to seeing them in person tomorrow night.

After a slow start in the first game, I like how they had some explosiveness and solid defense... still worried about the 3pt line D though.

Add me to the list of people who think So sweet should start over Battey.

He looks real real comfortable out there.

I did not know that.

Anyway, the Rams barely hung on to beat Montana State last night. Sounds like they may need some time to jell.

For what it's worth, I just picked up my Athlon preview. They have CU in the NIT, and rank MWIV the 46th best player in the nation overall. I still think this team is NCAA bubble, which ultimately could be NIT, but whatever...

I’d like to point out that it’s a complete unknown if USD is well coached. Sam Scholl is in his first full year at the helm, his first head coaching job. He took over at the end of last year when our previous coach got into legal trouble. He’s a USD alum and has put in assistant time at both USD and Santa Clara. Veteran squad for sure though.

I was basing that off what I saw in the game against UW in Seattle this week. They looked crisp for November.
