Interesting analysis on CU position attractiveness

Coacheshotseat just came out with a ranking of the best HC positions of the 13 available Div. 1.

Puts us 5th out of 13 and they believe for the right coach this could be a great fit and they'd have success.

You at least have to admit there is almost nowhere to go but up at this point so at least you'd come knowing you are going to show improvement if you are remotely competent.

I can see it - beautiful campus, Pac12, California and Texas recruiting grounds, The STATE University, close to Denver (major city), more??
 
Great article. I'm definitely looking for a coach to light a FIRE under this program. I love Stanford's approach to recruiting. They only take badasses who want to beat people up! We need that on defense in a bad way!
 
The writer of that blog is a Stanford guy but he is partial to Colorado, apparently spends a fair amount of time in Boulder and Colorado.
 
I don't understand why people think this is such a crappy job. I think the past 2 seasons has made the CU job even more enticing. If you beat a Div 1-AA team and beat CSU then you already greatly improved upon the prior administration. In my opinion, stepping into a crappy situation is where expectations are low is the best time to come in. Look at Bill Snyder... when talking about his legacy eveyone sites the fact that he inherited an awful team in the 80's. If he took over a descent team then it wouldn't be quite as impressive.

KSU at the time was historically bad...like one of the worst all time programs. CU is in a similar situation...the worst D1 team in the country.
 
It's a very good job. Probably not an elite position, like Michigan, Alabama, Texas, etc. But just under that level. If the admin puts the resources into the program that it should, this has the potential to be a very attractive place to coach.
 
The job is not as attractive as we'd like to think. Everything that's happened the last 7-10 years can be spun horribly negatively against us. We need to be prepared to be shot down by some of the guys we want, and we need to be prepared to overpay.

Hard to quibble much about that list, except that I would say if we kick off that $250M facilities project, I would argue there is not much separation from 3-5.

As much as I would like to agree with you, I don't know about that. Despite their problems this year, Arkansas has had much more recent success and seems much more dedicated to winning than we are. I would agree that kicking off the project would help us along to maybe catching up with Cal, you can't say we're there yet. We're lucky there's a huge dropoff between #5 and #6, or we might not even be that high.

THIS. It's a spring board job right now though for someone who has grander visions. I'd hope to find a guy who this would be his grand vision. Ala Tad Boyle.
 
In terms of places to live, a lot of guys won't be so attracted to 1-3 and I for one have problems living in the Bay Area, raising kids. There's a bunch of guys who would see CU as #1 in that list, if the money and support were there.

There would be no doubt after a turnaround who was king.....

Arkansas has had a winning record 11 times in the past 20 years. Same with CU. Arkansas has had more recent success, only to drop off the planet with the Petrino scandal. Particularly when you consider the pool of teams they are fighting against in the SEC vs. the Pac 12. With the right recruiting and coaching, I think ANY Pac 12 program could immediately assend to #3 in the conference. Can you say that with the SEC? You would have to jump into the top 10 of the BCS at least to get to that standing. Not saying we are a better program, just saying the drop off isn't much.

I do agree with you on a different set of job openings could change the drop off between 5 & 6.
