Irv Brown Retires...

I did not know where to put this - so I thought this was as good of place as any.

Irv was a big part of the Colorado sports at all levels. He coached baseball at CU and also was a football assistant coach. I could never understand how he could do all those things - coaching, referring, etc. I never knew anyone who loved sports so much. I also never knew anyone who did not like Irv.

Irv started sports talk radio before it existed (at least here in Denver). His knowledge and stories entertained to no end. Irv loves CU athletics. The air waves are a little poorer without him.

Irv Retires
 
A terrific official. Reffed some final fours back in the day. I think he was on the court in St Louis the day Bill Walton went 21 of 22 against Memphis in the championship game.
 
I honestly thought he retired like five years ago.

Sad to lose him on the airwaves. He was a character.
 
Is it "only" 35 years. I remember him on the air with Woody Paige and with Jim Turner. Think he started on KRZN.

When he was good he was much better than the junk on now. He talked a wide variety of sports, baseball, boxing, basketball, etc at all levels from HS to the pros. Even had people he could call on to talk about horse racing and hockey. Joe Williams started out as a caller talking college football, John Riegel (sp) called about recruiting long before Rivals and Scout had ever been dreamed about.

He knew all the college coaches and got some interviews that other radio guys wouldn't even try for.
 
I poked a lot fun at Irv, but you could do a heck of a lot worse given the radio personalities in Denver. God speed to that garage on Garfield St., enjoy your retirement....

Just cuz you never made it in the hunt and always picked the wrong card!

Only bad thing about Irv was his association with CU n made it impossible for him to ref games for CU and he was one of the best BB refs around. He was always encouraged guys to get into officiating. More people should have taken him up on that.
 
The last "Sunrise, Sunset"

Remember the name game, much more entertaining than discussing the Broncos QB situation for the 32nd time THAT DAY like 99% of sportstalk seems to be now.

 
Used to listen to Irv and Joe when they were on a station I could find. I agree that Irv is Mr. Sports Colorado and deserves to be recognized as such. In all honesty, I just got a bit tired of their routine.

Joe could get very tiresome but he is a very good man. Very few people know how big Joe's heart is. He use to go and pick up Thierry Smith and drive him to the radio station (KKFN - The Fan) when Thierry's MS got so bad he had trouble getting around. Joe did it quietly to help a friend.

I have to admit I have not listened to them for a long time but Irv has been a real asset to the Denver sports scene for a long time.
 
RED DOG!!!!!

First heard of Irv when he did the Nuggets broadcasts with Al Albert on Channel 2. Denver sports icon.
 
Irv and Joe were the only guys that would talk CU sports. Hopefully Joe can carry the torch a bit.
 
The only reason I don't listen to them is that they are on from 1 to 3. I'm kind of sad about this. I guess Irv's back has gotten too bad to drive. Sucks getting old.
 
I can't get them down here, signal isn't strong enough.

They also seem to have run out of gas over the years.

BnG is right though, both are really good guys. Joe has a big heart and what he did for Thierry isn't an isolated thing. I have heard from guys who Irv coached and from guys who Irv helped get opportunities to get into officiating and coaching.

He is a guy who wanted very much to help people and didn't want credit for doing it. Good guy.
 
Joe used to be a caller with the moniker "Bat Man." That was his nick name in Vietnam Nam because he was a machine gunner and wore sunglasses to protect his eyes from the muzzle flash.
 
Irv's last year as Arvada's football coach was 1971, the year before I got there. My brother played for him. Always liked the guy.
 
I'm gonna go buy some Scott's Liquid Gold in Irv's honor. Those people do a great job and everything.

DOWN GOES FRAZIER!

Loved sports talk back in the day. Can't stand it now. Haven't listened for at least 6 years. They're all obnoxious and they like to beat a subject to death.

That is awesome I hadn't heard that before.
I have said it before, some of the best shows they did were Nubs week and anytime the ncaa tournament would come to town. Irv could get anybody on
with him. Loved the old stories from the coaches about when Irv would ref.
