Is mac the man?

I have not posted on all buffs for some time.... But have some thoughts that I would love to share with the buffalo faithful (all 30 of us). First off I will say I liked HCMM when he was hired. I still like his passion and attitude. I was willing to give him time to turn this around. He has had ok recruits. He runs the team far better than Embree or hawk. BUT is he the man that can return CU to a respectable team? I am now convinced the answer is a resounding no. Here are my reasons. Play calling. Some would argue this is more OC issue but if Mac disagrees with play calling as HC gotta make the change yourself. Play calling is predictable and vanilla. Everytime we play I can almost without a doubt tell you exactly what CU will run. First down run up middle. Second down short throw or run again. 3rd and long inevitably come up and we throw a BS play in attempt to make up for the conservative BS that just happened. No stretching the field... No screens.. Nothing to put D on heels even a little. No wonder Sefo gets killed back there he is constantly put in ****ty situations. Also, there seems to be little ability to adjust to what the D is throwing at us. Yest at ASU they blitzed all day. Throw a screen!! Quick slant! something other than status quo! Get the ball out quick. Roll out. Fades. Straight 5 step drop and unload deep. Just do something!! If not QB gets murdered. Another big issue I have is lack of coaching awareness and no coaching situational awareness to players. For example yesterday they call a punt block when CU finally got a stop in 3rd q? Awuizi runs into kicker..., free first down which leads to another TD. Either the coach messed up by calling a block or didn't coach the player well enough to not charge at the punter in this situation! A punt block is once a year play. The buffs have multiple times given first downs they can ill afford for the off chance of a block. How many times have players done something dumb in a key situation? At some point this comes down to a coaching issue. Finally I love sefo. Heart of a warrior! BUT coaches insistence to stick with him is baffling. His accuracy is atrocious. He is not stepping into throws. He can't manage a clock (see hawaii ending, first half ending last night, ASU last year, cal last year etc). His footwork is awful and I see no changes to it... Which for the life of me I can't understand. Grants I think sefo is hurting a lot more than he leads on. It's time to give the kid a rest. Allowing him to continue to stay in when he no longer has the ability to throw accurately or effectively is a terrible choice. I suspect it's just cause his shoulder is shot but time to give it a break at least for a week or two. Work on footwork and try to come back in a few weeks.

Mac is a great man but I think this is gonna prove too much for him. If CU wants to win we need a coach like GB again. No non sense coach. Hard nose attack ( we need to build like Stanford has). Interested to hear thoughts

I think he's all but finished. I'd love to see us build like Stanford. Strong, physical football like we used to have.

deal with it that he's here through 2016 ....
things are better than before he got here .... need to give him the four years most coaches get...
recruiting looks to be decent considering CU went 2-10 last year..
I don't see him getting fired unless RG has an ace already committed to being the next coach.

Even if he is back and takes us to a bowl next year... would that be a good thing long term? RG would have a difficult decision to make

I don't think he's the guy, but I'm also not absolutely convinced at this time he should be fired at the end of the season.

Worth noting, however, is that we have a tiny recruiting class this year. Would be a good year for a transition class and then next year's class is massive. That's when most coaches have their biggest surge in recruiting. Might set up kind of well considering we'd have a veteran team next year too. New guy could have a nice first year and then double down with a legit recruiting class.

If he is back next year and takes us to a bowl, and assuming he maintains the recruiting momentum that seems to have been built this year then there is no question that he will get another year or two after. That would be a positive upward trajectory to build on.

Long term from there would remain to be seen.

I'd be OK with a change if it was Leavitt, but not another starry-eyed dreamer from a college football backwater or a no-name NFL guy.

So I agree we shouldn't Fire him now. We really don't want a rep as the school that routinely fires a coach after 2-3 years. That will make it impossible to get another good coach. I just am a little dejected after last night cause I have come to realization I don't think we will be getting any better under Mac. Too much vanilla, undisiplined football to win a a very good pac 12.

I agree with all this, but bottom line it's about 2 things: wins and RG's patience and I have no idea about either.

Anybody else see TG yelling at his D and making a throwing motion? He knew it was a pass 10 seconds before the snap. CU's tendencies are so obvious it is embarrassing.

One o-lineman in this class who won't see the field for at least 2 years. 205 pound linebackers. No DTs. Problematic IMO. Earlier this season, I thought Nembot would have a break out year but not so much. Online productivity worries me.

I think MM should get another year but some AC upgrades need to occur.

WAC mac taking us to a bowl next year doesn't mean he's the guy. He'll got a couple more years... I just hope we don't give him an extension for that

In this hypothetical scenario, wouldn't they have to extend him for at least a year or two if they want to give him 2017 and 2018?

I wouldn't necessarily count on getting to a bowl game next year. Go afead and
count CSU (never a sure thing), Idaho St, Ore St and Wazzu as wins. Where are the
other 2?

CSU - Denver

Idaho St - Boulder
ASU
Ore St
UCLA
Utah
Wash St

Arizona - Away
Stanford
Oregon
USC

Don't disagree, I'd want to see more than one years acceptable results. The other side of that is that if your coach doesn't have a contract other schools recruit against that. Best bet is a couple year extension but with a lower buyout.

I was never excited about his hire but at that time anyone but Embree was an upgrade. If you look at his coaching numbers even at San Jose State they were not that good, 2 losing seasons one big winning season. Not nearly a large enough resume to trust him with building this thing. What a frustrating state of affairs that we are having these talks again already. For the sake of the program I hope we find a way to sneak out a couple wins this season and prove us all wrong. If not, I would love to get Jeff Tedford in here. I'll take 7 or 8 wins a year for life rather than this long suffering nightmare I can't wake up from. Go Buffs

Are we still worrying about Vandy stealing Mike away? At this point he should be willing to work month to month.

My man WR with the best post in the thread. 2017 is a VERY important class. That has to be taken into account.

I think we need to remember that Bohn had a hard time landing any top head coaches when Embree was canned. HCMM was likely tenth on the list....RG should, you would hope, be able to bring a decent coach in with the investment in facilities, but who knows.

I think the job is a much better job now than it was when we hired Mac. Facilities, new competent AD, Mac has fixed up the roster to an adequate level. I mean, we're not going to be the first choice for a top tier guy, but we should be able to get a pretty decent guy.

I'm also rooting for us going with a coordinator. No more retreads from the MWC or something. Big time coordinator who has been running a very successful offense or defense in a big time conference the last few years. Preferably one with contacts in CA and TX.

Norm Chow? How is that working out?
