Erik Christianson: Preseason polls have CU at or near the top of the Pac 12 this coming season.
How do you manage expectations?
Tad: “The first thing I say is don’t believe everything you read (grinning). I tell my kids that, don’t believe everything you read, haha. You know this year we’re going to have to say, look, everyone expects us to be good and people are not going to overlook Colorado this year, not that they have in years past. But, uh, we’re going to get people’s best shot. We’ve gotta be ready for that.”
Segway to highlight video against UCLA Gatling to Bey for a slam.
EC: “It’s easy to be optomistic when you have players like McKinley Wright and Tyler Bey returning. Both were voted to the All Pac 12 first team last year. They give Tad Boyle his best one two punch since Spencer Dinwiddie and Andre Roberson. In Wright, Boyle has a player as good as any he’s ever coached.”
TB: “My expectations for McKinley have risen each year, you know, that I coach him. I call it the “It Factor” that he has. He has, uh, he has the it factor that you can’t describe it, you can’t put it into words, you can’t coach it, you can’t teach it. He’s just got “it.” He’s not only one of the best guards in our league, he’s one of the best guards in the country.”
EC: “While Tad is excited to see this team on the court, he’s also anxious to see what happens off the court in college basketball. An FBI investigation has resulted in the arrest of several assistant coaches and it has implicated several high profile teams in a cheating scandal. (Video of Sean Miller). Two years ago Tad put himself front and center Nationally on this issue when the Buffs beat Arizona, one of the teams under investigation. And that’s when I asked him this question. (Press conference after the AZ game. EC asks) “Tad, is there any extra satisfaction beating Arizona knowing what happened in the off season?”
TB: (In press conference) “Absolutely! Absolutely there is. Hell yes there’s extra satisfaction! I’ve got great respect for Sean. Helluva coach. I’ve got great respect for Andy Enfield, but, to answer your question, HELL YES!”
EC: “Since that day relationships with the two Pac 12 teams implicated, Arizona and usc, have been strained. Boyle’s comments led directly to this ugly incident last year against the Trojans.” (Video of the post game shinnanagins at usc).
(Back to this interview).
EC: “I feel like I need to apologize to you because I feel like the usc thing wouldn’t have gotten to that point had I not asked you that question after the Arizona game a year and a half ago.”
TB (grinning and nodding): “You do need to apologize, and apology accepted (laughing). I didn’t have to answer the way I answered.”
EC: (Laughing) “Right! (Inaudible) A year and a half later, do you regret your answer to that question?”
TB: “No.”
EC: “Not at all?”
TB: “No, because it was honest, and it was genuine and it was real. There were two programs in the Pac 12 that were implicated and, that’s where we were, that’s where we are, and that’s where history will reveal that.”
EC: “We finally have our first charges in this FBI investigation to some of the assistants who were involved, it’s been roughly 2 years, are you at all frustrated?”
TB: “I’ve gotten over it. There were certainly, there’s periods of frustration you go through...”
I just reached my delay limit but EC asked Tad “what happens if nothing is done.” Tad shook his head and said if nothing is done, that sends a clear message and we know what that message is.
