Jim Calhoun to retire from coaching

Ughh... They probably won't start a coaching search now, but I expect they'll make a phone call to CU to want to talk to Tad.

I think the second. But I think I am going to go to the PAC-12 tourney IN VEGAS this year so maybe the first. It is close for me.
 
Tourney run gets you more national attention, winning the PAC 12 again and beating Arizona, Cal or UCLA probably helps recruiting on the West Coast more. It's close for me.

Sweet Sixteen all the way. If CU wins or loses in the conference tourney, it doesn't make as big an impact in the greater world of NCAA bball as does a S16 appearance. The media and coaches start calling those teams "Cinderellas" and "Giant Killers" because you probably had to run a gauntlet of high profile teams to get there (especially if you lost your conference tourney).
 
I would rather win the PAC 12 tourney again. Only one team in the country does that.
 
Good. I don't like Calhoun. Glad I don't have to hear him speak anymore.

his buyout isn't big and he can easily double his salary this was from March of this year

Smart, under contract until 2019, will make $1.15 million this season. Additionally, he has about $125,000 coming in bonus money for making the NCAA tournament and winning the first game as well as for national television appearances and beating crosstown rival Richmond. That bumps his salary to about $1.285 million if you count the clothing allowance. Each NCAA tournament win is worth $37,500.
If he leaves VCU for another job before April 30, he or the school that hires him owes VCU $800,000. After April 30, his buyout drops to $700,000 (the amount decreases by $100,000 yearly).
Smart has $180,000 tied up in deferred compensation that he would stand to lose by leaving before April 15. He loses $90,000 if he leaves on or after that date.

They have a post-season ban this year, so they will do a real coaching search next year. They don't have anything to play for this year.

From my friend who worked at a college in athletics in the Big East... The Biggest Dick in all of college basketball. Probably a cheater. He did win, but he only gets positive spin because UConn is in tight with ESPN. Just a horrible horrible person.

Yes when I think of coaches in the hall of fame of slime balls, it's him, petino, calipari, and gillispie.
 
Am I the only one that thinks UConn is going to have a hard time getting a decent coach? They're in sanction hell, they're in a brutal conference and Storrs isn't exactly the easiest place to recruit kids to come to. With Calhoun gone, I'm curious to see if they head towards the middle of the pack now.

It could be a rocky transition, but there is a lot of support up there for UConn hoops.

I would at all be surprised to see that happen especially now with the current state of the Big East.

The safe money is on UConn falling back into the middle of the pack.

Why is Kentucky so good? How about Syracuse? Is it their proximity to recruits?

You can somewhat argue location for Syracuse (close enough to NYC), but I'm not sure I put UConn in the same historical grouping with Syracuse or Kentucky.

And honestly, when Boeheim steps down, depending on the hire, Syracuse could drop too.

Agree that Syracuse isn't immune from falling into the middle of the pack if they aren't careful with Boeheim's replacement. ****, they might even get a good replacement and be middle of the pack in the ACC. It is going to be a bloodbath.
