Jimmy Smith gets the last laugh

Smith gets the last laugh? Why does everyone here think that he's some sort ofa victim? Someone started a thread saying that the Milwaukee's paper attempt to sabotage his draft stock had failed. He was the one who failed 3 different drug tests, he was the one who was arrested for assault, he was the one who was twice cited for possesion. And the Baltimore paper reported all of these things after he was drafted as well so it's safe to assume there true and if they weren't I guarantee you that super-agent Drew Rosenhaus would have been in full on media denial blitz mode after the allegations came out. I also red in sports illistrated that some teams were very put off by his attitude in pre draft interviews and heard Adam Schefter imply something similar. Im not saying that any of this should have hurt his draft stock but if he did have a significant fall I would not have felt bad. Most people don't go out and get high on coedine syrup or throw people through glass doors at restraunts, among other things. Smith deserves plenty of blame for his actions and is hardly a victim. Im glad he went in the first round. Hopefully all of his problems are behind him and he goes and has a succesful NFL career.

Good for Jimmy. I saw on ESPN this morning where they listed him as the best pick of the 1st round and steal of the draft.

Hopefully he'll be one of the top corners in the League and play a long time.

I think all this Buff love from the national media is going to give us a nice boost to recruiting.

I think its pretty surprising that we were all in the dark about how many times this guy ****ed up. It's a little weird that the local media didn't jump on all this **** when it happened.
 
I enjoy jrk's posts, someone has to play the fool... (I could explain how Smith got screwed by the media compared, say, to Cam Newton, but logic flies right over his head. It's obvious from other threads that he only listens to himself, anyway.)
 
Yeah I guess it's better to have a convicted (should be) felon on your team and got kicked out of an SEC school than someone who failed a drug test or two and supposedly got arrested.

Yeah cause you have. ESPN didn't say much about that but I guess being a convicted felon is better than a failed drug test.

You’re an idiot. Go ahead and explain how the media screwed over Jimmy, Id love to hear that. One guy wrote an article talking about the CB’s in the draft. He spoke very highly of Jimmy but said that he might fall of….. He was doing his job as a journalist and reporting the facts. Regardless, NFL teams already knew about all that stuff, the article had no effect on his draft stock. The only opinions it may have swayed is those of the fans. And if jimmy had stayed out of trouble in the first place there would have been nothing to write about, let’s put the blame where it deserves to go.

It was very slanted. At first, almost all of us were surprised that character issues were even being brought up as an issue. He hadn't been in trouble since his freshman year and he had earned his degree. As far as his personality goes, most people who were around him a lot said he was a good guy. Only negative I'd heard was that he is confident to the point that it rubs some people as arrogant, but that's exactly what I'd expect from a lockdown corner.

But he was made out to be Lawrence Phillips or something. Considering the character issues of other first round picks (some much worse things such as felony convictions), it seemed excessive toward Jimmy. And then it went to excessive beyond all doubt when a sportswriter took it to a level it should never go by writing about his personal life and that he'd been through a couple abortions. That was way over the top.
 
And the fact that he is a CU player and we should defend him much more than we would defend some random person. Unless you are JRK and aren't really a Buff fan. Then, **** this kid Jimmy.

I think Jimmy cost himself some serious coin by slipping to #27. I think it's pretty reasonable to assume he would have gone higher.

using 2010 numbers for CB's taken in first round:

#7 pick signed for 5 years, $50M, $26M guaranteed
#16 pick signed for 5 years, $16M, $13.35M guaranteed.
#27 pick signed for 5 years, $13M, $7.8M guaranteed.

Of course, we all assume the NFL is going to smash those salaries down this year. Still, looking at guaranteed money, one has to assume Jimmy left something like $2-5M on the table.....

Hope Embree uses this as a case study. Most of Jimmy's mistakes were early in his career when he was yet to be on a track to being drafted in the NFL. He cost himself big time. Embree's guys coming in should be thinking NFL from day 1. It's ok to have some fun, but keep it real boys. The NFL's spy network had the information long before any press was written.
 
Man that sucks that he's only going to be making roughly $2.3M/year.../end sarcasm
