1996-1999 Oregon (Player)
2001-2002 Boise State (GA)
2003-2005 California (LB)
2006-2009 Boise State (DC)
2010-2011 Tennessee (DC)
2012 Washington (DC)

Scoring Defense rankings

2006-20th
2007-25th
2008-3rd
2009-14th
2010-56th (Tennessee ranked 38th in 2009)
2011-36th (Tennessee ranked 105th in 2012)
2012-39th (Washington ranked 108th in 2011)

In 2011, Wilcox presided over a Tennessee defense that ranked No. 28 in the nation in total defense (340.5 yards per game) and 35th in scoring defense. In his first season with the Vols in 2010, his defense led a late-season rally that led them to a bowl game. The UT defense held four straight November opponents to 14 or fewer points in that season-ending stretch.

Wilcox began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Boise State in 2001 and 2002. He then moved to California, where he was linebackers coach for three seasons (2003-05), helping the Bears to a 26-12 record and three bowl games during that span.
In 2006, he returned to Boise State as defensive coordinator and mentored a Broncos squad that led the WAC in defense all four seasons he worked there (2006-09). In 2009, BSU finished the season ranked No. 14 in the nation in total defense and scoring defense, and No. 3 in turnover margin. In 2008, Boise's defense was third nationally in scoring at just 12.6 points per game. Eight of 13 opponents were held to 10 points or fewer.
In Wilcox's first season, 2006, the Bronco ranked No. 8 in the nation in rush defense and Boise State finished the year with a 13-0 record and a famous overtime win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl.

Pros

- young, up and coming DC with a strong resume
- P12 and West Coast ties

Cons

- no HC experience

Told Boise St. HC Chris Petersen that he would give up one of his defensive scholly's in order to sign Kellen Moore. Dad is in NFL HOF and brother was also in NFL.

Definitely an up and comer....

But I really, really think he needs another year or two of experience before he's ready for his first HC gig:nod:

ya, he can recognize offensive talent as well. plus he could potentially bring tosh with him.

Sorry to break Duff's heart but someone over on the Main Board posted that his brother said he isn't interested. fwiw

Apparently Cal wants no part of him because he wants to bring Lupoi as DC. We wouldn't have an issue with this and it would be awesome. We'd have a ridiculously talented defense at the very least with that duo on our staff. Then if we could hire McCall or Stitt as OC and this would be pretty exciting.

I don't know. Sounds not too much different than what we just had. A guy in his first HC gig with a guy in his first DC gig, and an OC that is at the division III level. Could work out, but I'll pass.

That would absolutely not be like what we just had. Wilcox is a seasoned DC, Lupoi would be the DC in title only. Embree couldn't oversee the offense with the authority that Wilcox has.

I'm higher on McCall as OC than Stitt, but coming from lower levels and being a good OC is not rare. College football is littered with guys that were calling plays in high school a couple of years ago and are now seen as the leading innovators.

I must have missed it, but what is Cal's problem with Lupoi?

What I understand is that Cal's APR has really taken a beating due in large part to players that Lupoi brought in. Being seen as slipping academically isn't acceptable to Cal's administration.

Which is dumb because it's not like position coaches bring in kids without consent of the HC. If they took too many risks, then that's on Tedford.

Yeah. And that makes it hard for CU to look at Tedford. There was a report I saw that said Cal's football had like a 1.8 team GPA.

I agree and that is part of the reason Tedford was let go according to the Cal alum I was talking with last night.

I think Reed just threw that out there to appease DuffMan. I wouldn't understand the move at all unless he really prefers Boulder to Seattle. Seems like a step back.

I doubt folks would have noticed GPAs if the team was winning. The opposite applies to CU. The current football team is apparently doing very well academically, but who's talking about that?

Same deal as him going from Tenn. to UDub $$$

The Vols were clearly a sinking ship. Most people up here believe that the Huskies are on the upswing, so it's not exactly the same situation. I'd be happy to be wrong but I just don't see it.

There's something to that, of course. If a coach goes to administrators and says that he needs to skirt some academic rules (or get marginal players admitted) then he damn well better produce.

I could see it for the following reasons:
1.) Maybe he hasn't gotten much interest this year in any of the HC positions
2.) He wants to improve his chances to be a HC
3.) His defenses are ranking in the 30's and not getting into the top 25
4.) A LOT easier to go from 120th in the nation to say 80th or 50th in the nation in 1 year than to achieve #3
5.) If he does #4, he improves his chances of getting an HC position
6.) Based on what we are hearing on salaries, CU is ready to stepup and probably pay him more than he makes now
7.) Maybe he and/or his wife hate the rain
8.) Maybe he sees the writing on the wall at UW that even if his Sark is fired he is not getting promoted
