I can't go back tell you a single assistant coach before the Mac era, but I'd say Hankwitz is the only one that comes close.

Glad to see an Army coach get some recognition. Nice story there this season.

Yes. Hankwitz was solid but Leavitt has done more with less, faster.
He didnt become DC until 1988 though. Lou Tepper was DC until leaving for the same job at Illinois. CU went 8-4 in 1988, 11-1 in 1989, and 11-1-1 in 1990. He did help Mac1 begin the rebuilding process.

1985–1987Colorado (OLB/P)
1988Colorado (DC/ILB/P)
1989Colorado (DC/P)
1990Colorado (DC/DB/P)
1991Colorado (DC/P)
1992–1994Colorado (DC/OLB/P)

I like both guys quite a bit. But I'd agree that Leavitt has led a much more remarkable turnaround.

Leavitt should win this hands down. Especially if they look at what each coach was tasked with to start the process, like talent

Bama is Bama every year. It's easy when you have all the talent. Nope
Clemson was #2 in the nation last year. See reason for Bama. I would argue their defense is underperforming at 8
Michigan: there are 2 big 10 foes in the top 50 scoring offenses. It's easy to have a "good defense" when your opponent can't score on anyone.
Pitt: The dude's name is Canada. This is America.

Boom, JMFL wins by default
