Lets Talk Rivals

How we doing Allbuffs? I was a Freshman at CU in 2009 and just graduated last may. I am from the NYC area and from the moment I was accepted I have been a die hard Colorado fan. I have seen an awful football program consisting of three head coaches, a conference change, a pac 12 championship and many other good and bad things that I don't need to list on this fan site. I have attended pretty much every home basketball game since freshman year (besides for breaks) and my buddies and I even packed up drove to ABQ when we were in the tournament in 2012. We also have our own secret fan group that I started on facebook called "The Loyal Boyles" where we talk all things Buffs.

However being a die hard for this short amount of time, if you were to ask me, the teams I HATE I would say Arizona and Oregon. Also my brother goes to ASU so I have that rivalry. Being an East Coast Buff, I jumped on the CSU sucks band wagon but I don't feel the hatred like I am sure people who are originally from Colorado do. I despise Kansas and always look forward to playing them but we won't be playing them like we used to and the Nebraska rivalry is nonexistent these days.

That said when I arrived to Boulder in August of 2009 I was told to hate Nebraska, CSU, and Kansas (I was also told by the time my class graduates, we would be National champions. Thanks Hawkins.) Though I still strongly dislike them, nothing would make me happier then to beat the piss out of these Pac 12 schools especially Zona.

So I ask you AllBuffs. You have been around a lot longer than I have. In this new era, who is our true Rival and also would they agree?

Thanks and GO BUFFS!

Welcome to Allbuffs. Your post makes an interesting point...lots of things makes a rival. Where you're from, conference we play in etc. I don't think CU has any true rivals in football anymore. A rivalry with AZ basketball is starting to brew. For me, I will always hate Notre Dame...just cuz they're ND...overrated and overexposed. My hatred for our historical rivals is fading as I get older and further removed from playing them...like Nebraska. I actually root for CSU cuz they're a Colorado school and I never considered them a rival until we started sucking...I must admit McElWhiner gets on my nerves in a big way.

Whoever we hate we all LOVE THE BUFFS!!!!

Our arrival is our athletic department. Well it was. Now it's just DiStefano and every major media outlet

You n00bs are doing this all wrong.

All three of you (RollTad included) get me a beer and sammich STAT!

For the rival talk, in the Pac-12 for basketball - Arizona, football - Oregon. Why? Same theory Mac1 applied to Nebraska - shoot for the top.

But I still seethe over Nebraska - was majorly pissed when they beat Georgia, although I really lost my **** when the sheep pulled out the miracle "Coug It" vs. Wazzu, just because I knew how insufferable those unknowledgable assholes would be about their win. ****ing Leach.

Rivals take time and meaningful games. The seeds have been planted for one with Arizona, although much of their fan base doesn't seem to think so. I think there will be a rivalry with Utah if they keep improving their program.

No rivals in football at this time.

Welcome newbie

I think there is a legit rivalry forming in BB with Arizona and I think it may continue to grow if both teams continue to be among the tops in the Pac.

As for FB, many would say you have to be relevant to have a rivalry and I kind of think that right now. Since we have sucked since entering the Pac in FB, I don't think we have formed a rivalry. Don't think it should be Oregon though b/c we won't play them every year. I think we should aim for USC being our rivalry although UCLA, Standford and Oregon will probably be higher priorities for their fans for some time.

But we should aim to be a thorn in their side where we dominate them in Boulder and occasionally beat them in condom stadium. If we pull that off we have become relevant and we can make their fans hate CU.

I agree with Boyd.

It's still way too early to tell basketball-wise, and FB is still a complete dumpster fire. Until we win some meaningful games, it won't matter.

I wouldn't exactly call them a rival, but for me Oregon games seem to get me more hyped than most, because of our history with them when I attended CU.

First there was the 2002 Fiesta Bowl. We supposedly crushed Nebraska's title dreams by destroying them 62-36 to close out the regular season (thus my username), then go on to beat Texas in the Big XII championship, giving us an outside shot at playing Miami in the title game. Instead, Nebraska STILL gets the nod and we end up playing Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl. Not exactly what we wanted, but still a great opportunity to prove ourselves in the highest profile game since the Mac era. And Oregon CRUSHED us. Joey Harrington had one of his best games ever and shortly thereafter scandals would cripple our football program, and we all know how it's been since.

Fast forward to 2004. Our basketball program had a really good team that started the year slow and came on strong in conference play. We had David Harrison, Michel Morandais, Chris Copeland... But because of the bad start, we just missed a tournament bid and ended up in the NIT where we faced another strong team that underachieved: Oregon. And what a game that was. Hard fought all the way through, constant lead changes, and one of the best late game performances I've seen from Oregon's Luke Jackson. He had 40 points, including 14 in the last 5 minutes of regulation. At one point he scored 29 consecutive points for Oregon, including the game-tying 3 to sent the game to overtime where Oregon eventually won.

So yeah, not exactly a rival, but man I hate losing to them!

No one. Oregon and ASU are douchebags and we have a work in progress with Arizona in basketball. That's about it. We're CSU's rival, they aren't ours.

We hate everyone that isn't us. If they were us they'd be fine but they're not so **** them.

Particularly Notre Dame in all sports, Nebraska in all sports and all of the citizens of that ****-swamp living and dead, Arizona basketball, Organ basketball and football. **** all of them aggressively.

after that everyone gets more of a "meh, ****em'"

You missed the part where supposedly our 38-6 Cotton Bowl victory over the Ducks in the freezing rain in Jan 1996 (I know, because I was there - it was miserable) caused Phil to open his wallet to help the Ducks FB team to get on track. They also accused Skippy of running up the score after missing a blocked punt (sound familiar to the Bball game ending on Sunday?).

Fast forward football a few years when we have Nubs back on the schedule. If those games don't get our fanbase fired up, then let's hope that we have found a new rival in the PAC (I can't see UTAH becoming that rival, no matter how hard the PAC forces that upon us). CSEwe is a joke - we have less of a rivalry with them now than ever - nobody cares about Rky Mtn Showdown. Football is tough as we have never really had a true rival, although most of us regard Nubs as just that.

BBall is developing nice rivalry with AZ, but maybe they dont see it the same. UCLA will be a nice rival there as they return to relevance someday.

By year five (5) in the PAC, you hippies may have a rival. To think or consider otherwise is just stupid. Do you have any idea how much history this conference has? I'll answer that...no you don't. You can read about it but you weren't here. Don't kid yourselves. Nobody in the PAC thinks you're their rivals. Conjecture and conversation is great but all-assuming threads like this are idiotic.

Give it a little time. You have a class act as a coach and a good team. I (and others in the west) applaud your accomplishments and enjoy visiting your fine campus. Home games at CU are a bitch. That's becoming more evident every year. Utah is becoming a pain in the ass too. You have a good thing going and your fans are fantastic. We're glad to have you in the PAC.

Asking to identify "a rival" right now? Everybody kicks every team's ass at home within the PAC. Do something extraordinary. Be great. Be consistent. Be a contender every year. Be humble. Be realistic. Be a champion on the national scene. Do this and you'll get a rival in this, the conference of champions.

Good luck and Godspeed during your journey.

ASU is on top of my fecal roster. Oregon has nouveau riche fans, but outside of athletics they seem to be functioning adults. Tempe is a wasteland of human detritus.
