Mac had his presser today and was asked about going for it on 4th down near the end of the game.
He says that they were seriously thinking about going for it if it was 4th and 5 or 4th and 8, but since it was 4th and 15 yards, they decided to punt, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE WERE SACKED ON THE PLAY RIGHT BEFORE. No, Steven was not sacked on 3rd down, he was sacked on 2nd down and then we all know he chucked it down the sidelines on 3rd down and it was incomplete and not even catchable.
So, he was not clear on what actually happened, and then earlier in the interview, he mentioned that Steven played well enough for the Buffs to win, but maybe could have played better at the end?
So, then as the interview completes, Mac is beginning to get hypothetical and said, maybe we should have gone for it and if we missed, they take over right there (COL 45) and then if we cannot stop them, they score faster and who knows.
2-3 game management mistakes right there that have to be fixed to show that in big games we have a staff that is very clear on strategy.
First, on 3rd and 15 you call a play and inform the QB that we are in 4 down mode and would like to cut the yardage needed in half or better. The defense will very likely be playing a little back trying to cover the sticks, so there should be a 5-8 yard quick throw available. Then we go for it on 4th down and hopefully make it and the drive continues, and remember you are only down by 4 points. But, even if we do not make it, there is 5:33 left in the game and maybe all we are trying to do on defense is to be extremely aggressive and look to stop them for a FG, or just let them score and we will be back on offense.
Seems minor and meaningless, but the last details needed to improve an organization are much harder than the first ones. Let's say the Buffs were at a 25 on a 100 scale five years ago when he showed up, and over the past 5 years he has improved us to say a 75-80 level with culture, facilities, some decent recruiting, etc. Well, the last 20-25 levels are so much harder and require so much more skill that you must master any and all nuances to get there because the curve is tighter. The one coach that has done this the absolute best in the past 5 years is Dabo Sweeney!
