MacIntyre is different

One of the the things I like about him is that he is a straight talker. In interviews he puts himself out there like a pro. He doesn't seem to bull**** with platitudes or cliches. (No junk in the trunk type BS or screaming at players). He is straight forward and if he doesn't know an answer he says so or says we haven't made a decision yet.

I also believe the players have bought into his philosophy. This is the first season in a long time where the Buffs will be able to redshirt the bulk of a recruiting class. Good things are on the horizon.

I hope the team can make it to a bowl game this year.

For comparison's sake I went back and watched some videos of Hawkins and Embree from around this time in camp and they were saying a lot of positive things but it came off as less genuine. After a certain point I just felt like throwing up every time Hawkins opened his mouth though so I might be biased.

I actually think the exact opposite. You wonder why you hear him quote the same response time and time again? because he has thought it out and scripted it. "freshman just want to play, sophomores want to start, then juniors realize they want to win." ive literally heard him say that 3 different times. Not that I think anything is wrong with scripted answers, in fact i would rather my coach keep his comments safe than have an unpredictable coach just spewing nonsense. Either way, mac is careful w/ what he says, not a straight talker.

I agree. It was reinforced for me recently when he was talking about being responsible for giving these guys the foundation for a good life and not just using them to win games. Not many coaches would even say that and a lot of those that do are completely full of crap. MacIntyre seems very genuine in the things he says and does. Compare that to the two coaches down in Arizona who couldn't be more full of BS if they tried. But unfortunately for Mac, being genuine doesn't win football games and he'll have to do more of that if he wants to stay in Boulder long-term.

So you can't be a straight talker and being careful with what you say?

Yep. He seems like a good guy, but his interactions with the media are pretty meh to me.

This was my reaction, too. Apparently, to be a straight talker for some people means blurting out whatever pops in your head. They're not mutually exclusive.

A straight talker doesn't mean being filterless. He just doesn't fill interviews with a bunch of cheesy clichés. We all were tired of Hawkins filling 75% of his interviews with phrases like he was playing the 'Aw shucks Buzzword Bingo' game.

I can understand the BS meter when dealing with Graham but I don't get why people are so down on Rich Rod, he seems to be a pretty good guy. Just because he complains are refs when being comfortably ahead doesn't make him a d-bag.

All coaches same the stuff Mac says. It's the Nuke Laloosh thing. The difference is you folks are buying into now when you weren't before. He hasn't changed his behavior since he got here.

My take on MacIntyre is that he listens to the questions and answers as honestly as he can without giving too much away. He seems to try to answer a question thoroughly and to have respect for the journalists who have a job to do (and respect for fans) by not giving completely pat answers or dismissing things as if we couldn't possibly grasp the complexities of college football. Not a lot of fireworks or sound bytes, so he makes for a boring interview. But he can be educational.

Agree. My point was more that he's changing perceptions for the better, rather than he himself being different.

I think when Mac said he prefers college over the pros because of the role he can play in these young men's lives, he genuinely believes that and I think that is a quality that will pay dividends with some kids and their parents. I hope that, anyway.

I think the exact opposite of Mac. In fact, he reminds me a lot of Hawkins in the way he talks. I lost all respect for Mac when he recruited his son. His undersized, slow-footed, lightly recruited, son.

Is it fair to wait to see him play first before losing all respect over this?

No. New rule about little Mac, if you haven't been to practice to see him don't comment about his ability. When someone makes comments that he is slow footed it just makes them look completely stupid. Oh and for the undersized comment, the starting slot receiver ahead of him is smaller than he is.

We have no choice but to wait and see. This story line has legs that very well may stretch into 2019.
