Maryland and Rutgers headed to the Big 10

Wow.

So the BiG is going to 14. I wonder who the ACC will target to get its numbers back up. UConn & Louisville?

Well, the ACC is only losing 1 team and my guess is UConn would be their first target. That gives BC a regional partner and with the ACC, it's only about basketball. But if this ends up happening I have to wonder if this rekindles the possibility of Clemson and FSU going to a real football conference?

The Big 10 undoubtedly prefers Maryland for that DC market.
 
Despite being in the ACC forever, Maryland has always been a bit of an outlier in the ACC. Yeah, they take the basketball thing seriously, but Maryland's culture/student body has MUCH more in common with Penn State/Rutgers than they do with the southern flavor of the ACC. Now obviously Pitt and Syracuse coming in would have changed that a bit, but still, not overly shocking at all. IMO.

Not sure what they'll do for lacrosse, by far their best sport apart from woman's basketball.

UVA wouldn't be able to go anywhere unless VT jumped to the SEC. It's one of those states where they're kind of locked in. Also, UVA has longtime rivals in the ACC. Maryland doesn't.
 
I am not sure if the switch is worth the exit fee for Maryland.

What do they gain by joining the B1G?
 
Maryland has potentially great rivalries with Penn State and Rutgers.

I still think that if the B1G goes to 16 that it will target Notre Dame + whomever ND wants (I'd guess either BC or UVA).

Pennsylvania and Maryland play a "Big 33" game every year. Used to be PA & OH. It's the top prospects from each state in a HS all-star game. And it's a big ****ing deal.

The ND to the Big 10 ship has sailed with this recent ACC deal that Swofford was stupid enough to agree to. ND has exactly what they want now - a part-time schedule against the 2nd-worst BCS football conference and they can still claim they're independent. Plus it also gives them a nice home for basketball and all the non-revenue sports.

No Penn State fan is going to give a **** about Maryland. Sorry don't see any potential "rivalry" I doubt Rutgers cares about Maryland either.

You know I went to Penn State, right? And grew up in NJ and PA? I'm not talking out of my ass here. PSU's biggest frustration with the B1G is that there wasn't a rival. Ohio State is the closest, but they've got Michigan. And Michigan State was forced on PSU for rivalry week (another team that focuses more on Michigan). Maryland and Rutgers will both target PSU and each other. It's a fantastic fit.
 
The Big 10's been a bad conference this year, and will for a few more years. Bringing in bottom-feeders with small stadiums and limited football fanbases won't be a step up immediately.

PSU doesn't want to validate them. The resurgence PSU had after all the talk about firing JoePa 15 years ago was when assistants were hired to focus on recruiting western PA. That's Pitt's back yard. PSU is also blocking Pitt from B1G consideration for this reason. Recruiting that part of the state well is Penn State's lifeblood.

weak. Pitt would be a better addition than Maryland or Rutgers imo.

Money:

The ACC rights fees have been renegotiated twice in the last 18 months. They still lag significantly behind the Big Ten. And in four short years the Big Ten is going to cash in big in four years when it renegotiates its television deal. It will conceivably zoom past the SEC and Pac-12.

What's really interesting is Delany could have UNC on his radar:

Unless there is that larger strategy at work here. Unless the age of superconferences really is upon us and the Big Ten is going to lead the way. Why stop at 14, when it can go 16 when it gets a foothold on the East Coast? Does this move eventually pry North Carolina loose?

Suddenly, we're talking some serious BTN dollars with the conference in states with at least 35 percent of the U.S. population. The per-subscriber rate goes from 10 cents – that was the rate outside the Big Ten footprint when BTN launched in 2007 – to maybe 50 cents. Maybe a dollar. Then it goes higher because Maryland basketball fans realize that's the only way they can see some of the Terrapins games.

And if Jim Delany gets his alma mater, we're talking realignment Armageddon. Then what is an ACC worth to Notre Dame without North Carolina and Maryland?
