After a great 3-0-0 road trip to start Big 12 play, #16 ranked SOCCER (9-1-0 overall; 3-0-0 in conference play) returns to Boulder for its 1st 2 home conference matches of the season this week. 1st off is a Thursday night match with the Baylor Bears (6-4-1, 1-2-0), followed up with a Sunday matinee with the Kansas Jayhawks (4-3-3, 1-2-0).

Note - From looking at this week's opponents' schedules, one difference with the Pac 12 looks to be that teams can have both home and road matches the same weeks, as both Baylor and KU's other matches this week are at their home fields.

As with the other home matches so far this season, looks like streams for both of this week's will be available for those with premium ($) ESPN+ subscriptions. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Go Buffs!!!

No. 16 Buffs Return Home

Colorado hosts Baylor on Thursday

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER —
Colorado soccer returns home this week, following its three-match road swing to open the Big 12 season. The No. 16 Buffaloes will open the week on Thursday, hosting the Baylor Bears for the first time since 2019.

The No. 16 ranking is the highest the Buffs have climbed since reaching No. 15 in the Oct. 16, 2018, United Soccer Coaches poll.

Colorado's 3-0-0 start to Big 12 play is its best start to conference play since its 6-0-0 start to the 2016 Pac-12 season. The Buffs' three-match conference winning streak is part of their larger, nation-leading eight-match winning streak. The Buffs have not dropped a match since Aug. 18.

"We're coming back home, and I think that will bring renewed energy," head coach Danny Sanchez said. "It was a tough three-game stretch from a travel side of things, and we were able to get the results, which was important. I don't know that we played our best soccer at all times. So, we're excited to be back home."

The Buffs enjoyed the friendly confines of Prentup Field this season, boasting a 5-1-0 record. The team has outscored opponents 15-4 at home and has recorded three consecutive clean sheets.

Colorado's offense has been in overdrive the last three matches, recording games with 23, 11 and 24 shots. CU has outshot its opponents 58-33 and a staggering 30-9 in shots on goal to start Big 12 play. The Buffs' 58 shots in Big 12 play lead the con, CU has just four goals to show for it, with all three matches being one-goal decisions.

"At the end of it, we're creating chances," Sanchez explained. "If you're getting one goal and only creating one chance, that's a problem. We're creating chances. We're getting into good spots. I think the goals are going to come. We have really good personnel, and if you look at this past weekend, it's probably unfortunate not to maybe get some more, especially on Sunday. We know that those come and go, but we're going to be good in goal, good in the back and solid in what we do. As long as we're creating chances, we'll be good."

Colorado has 20 goals by nine different goal-scorers this season. Last week's scoring started with two of the Buffs' emerging threats, Hope Leyba and Jace Holley. Leyba is tied with Shyra James for the team lead in goals (5) and points (11). Holley has put in three goals this season, all three of which are game-winners. The freshman leads the Big 12 and is 11th in the nation in game-winning goals.

"I think going forward, like I said, although maybe it's not showing in the score, but I think the movement has been good," Sanchez added. "I think Juliauna in the midfield has been absolutely fantastic. Miky [Rosenbaum], obviously Emerson [Layne] getting the goal [at Iowa State]. We have a lot of personnel when Ava gets going forward. Jace and Hope have been really good and when we get Shyra back, it will be another boost to the attack."

The Buffs hold a 7-6-3 series advantage over the Bears. The two teams last met in a 1-0 win for CU at Prentup Field in 2019.

Baylor (6-4-1, 1-2-0 Big 12) broke out of its scoreless drought to start Big 12 play with a four-goal showing against Houston last Thursday. The 4-0 win over the Cougars stopped a four-match winless streak.

Thursday's kickoff is set for 7 p.m. MT on ESPN+.

The first 300 fans through the gates will receive a free Soctober Fest t-shirt.

Fans are also encouraged to donate new or like-new winter clothing items to benefit the Porchlight Family Justice Center.

It's still 1-0 at the half.

Goal highlight -

And, overall, it's been a tight match with both sides having many scoring opportunities, with Nytes already having made a great save or 2-

Baylor ties it in the 61st minute on an own goal right after a Buff shot hit the post hard a minute or so earlier.

Hopefully not serious, but James went down in the 51st minute after contesting a ball. She did soon come back in but then had to leave with an injury sub a few minutes later.

Buffs Draw with the Bears in Return to Prentup Field

No. 16 Colorado picks up the point with its first draw of the season

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER — No. 16 Colorado played to a 1-1 draw in its return to Prentup Field Thursday night against Baylor. The result extends the Buffaloes' unbeaten streak to 10 games.

The Buffs keep pace with the top tier of the Big 12 with 10 points in conference play.

"I thought we played really well," head coach Danny Sanchez expressed. "We responded great after they scored their goal. The last 30 minutes was one-way traffic. We created a lot of good opportunities. We got into good spots. It just didn't fall our way."

Colorado (9-1-1, 3-0-1 Big 12) opened the scoring right before halftime, with Shyra James returning to the lineup after being sidelined the previous two matches. She recorded CU's lone tally, her sixth of the season and 46th career. The goal moves her just three points behind Taylor Korneick's school-record 102 career points.

Baylor (6-4-2, 1-2-1 Big 12) got back to even midway through the second half off an own goal.

The Buffs pushed the rest of the night, firing off 12 of their 14 shots after the Baylor goal. Their efforts almost paid off in the form of a corner kick in the final seconds that Jace Holley headed on net as time expired.

CU recorded its sixth game of 20 or more shots, closing the night matching its season-high of 26.

"At the end of the day, we had 26 shots but only eight on goal," Sanchez continued. "I think we need to be a little more efficient that way. But it wasn't from a lack of effort or a lack of commitment to get forward. It just didn't fall for us tonight."

Colorado goalkeeper Jordan Nytes, having not faced a shot on goal last time out at Iowa State, made five saves on Thursday.
...

"This is what you're going to get [in the Big 12]," Sanchez commented. "They're [Baylor] happy to come on the road and get a point. For us, we have to bounce back tomorrow morning and be ready for Sunday against Kansas."

Up Next
Sunday marks the second leg of the Buffs' current three-game home stand. Kansas will come to town for a 1 p.m. kickoff.

Notes
The 10-game unbeaten streak is tied for the third longest in program history (Sept. 4 – Oct. 14, 2016)… Beyer's assist was her first point of the season and her first since Nov. 4, 2022… CU's four-game unbeaten streak to Big 12 play (3-0-1) is its best conference start since going 4-0-2 to start the 2018 Pac-12 season…The Buffs now have 15 different players with a point this season.

There's no score at the half.

Based on my admittedly VERY limited soccer knowledge, hope the Coaches have some good strategies to change things next half, as this may have been the most inefective offensive half I've seen from the team this season. (The Buffs are statistically up 3-1 in shots on goal, but believe they are all from 3 straight free kicks from midfield taken by goalie Nytes that harmlessly went RIGHT to the Jayhawk goalie.)

the good and bad of CU soccer. Good defensive and great in goal but we go through stretches where we can not score and don't really struggle to connect passes to score. Team really misses SJ. Good win in a physical match up but CU needs to find a way to get 2 or more goals in games coming up.

Note - I was at the game, and Ms. James wasn't in uniform and looked to have some rubber device (brace?) around one of her knees.

Also, the 2 big highlights of the match:

1) A GREAT back to back save sequence by goalie Nytes early in the 2nd half (she also had a nice diving save in her only opportunity for one in the 1st half) -

2) And, of course, the goal -

From the standings at https://big12sports.com/standings.aspx?standings=212 , the Buffs are now in a 3 way tie for 1st place with 13 points after 5 matches, with Texas Tech joining the Buffs and West Virginia (the later 2 of whom a 2 way tie going into this week's matches).

Holley Scores Late, Buffs Prevail

The No. 16 Buffaloes extend unbeaten streak to 10 games

By: Seth Pringle, Athletic Communications

BOULDER — Colorado freshman Jace Holley continued to have a winning touch for the No. 16 Buffaloes on Sunday. She notched her fourth goal of the year in the final 10 minutes of the play, helping the Buffs to a 1-0 win over Kansas at Prentup Field.

All four of Holley's goals this season have been game-winners. She moves into a tie for sixth in CU history for the most game-winning goals in a season.

"It's super cool to score a game-winning goal," the Fort Collins, Colo., native stated. "The energy is just so incredibly high. It's just so fun. I was getting tired at the end, but I scored that goal, and it just brought everyone's energy up, and we were able to pull through."

The win for the Buffs comes off a draw against Baylor on Thursday and extends the team's unbeaten streak to 10 games. Colorado hasn't dropped a contest since Aug. 18, matching its third-longest unbeaten streak in program history.

"We know all these Big 12 games are going to be like it was today and Thursday," head coach Danny Sanchez mentioned. "I think over the course of 90 minutes, we played well. I told the team at half that I thought we lost our way a little bit in the last 15-20 minutes. In the second half, they [KU] got the one big chance, and Jordi [Nytes] came up big. Other than that, I felt all the chances were ours."

Colorado (10-1-1, 4-0-1 Big 12) has now reached double-digit win totals in back-to-back seasons for the first time since doing so in four consecutive seasons from 2016-19. It is the eighth time the Buffs have hit 10 wins under Coach Sanchez.

CU goalkeeper Jordan Nytes made three saves, including back-to-back stops that kept the game scoreless in the second half, for her eighth shutout of the season.

The loss drops Kansas to 5-4-3 and 2-3-0 in the Big 12.
...

The Buffs outshot the Jayhawks, 6-3, in the second half but didn't get a shot on goal until Holley's goal in the 81st minute.

Ava Priest sent her signature flip-throw into the 18-yard box from the CU sideline. The ball first found the head of Hope Leyba, who directed it to the top of the six-yard line. Faith Leyba attempted a diving header, but the ball remained surrounded by bodies atop the six. Holley punched the ball with her right foot and bounced once before going into the empty net.

"It was one of Ava's flip throws, which are awesome," Holley recalled. "They always seem to go right in the right place, but they're bouncing around like crazy. I just saw my teammate right behind me for a diving header. Her head was near the cleats, and then it popped straight to me, and I was like, 'If anything, this is for her.' She's putting her body on the line. I just had to finish it off for her and my team."

Colorado killed off the final nine minutes to secure the game's three points.

Up Next
The Buffs have just one match next week, hosting No. 22 TCU on Saturday (Noon).

Notes
Colorado's 4-0-1 start to Big 12 play is its best conference start since going 4-0-2 to start the Pac-12 season in 2018…The Buffs improve to 10-8-1 all-time against KU…CU's 12 total shots were its fewest since having 11 at Oklahoma State…The team's four shots on goal were the fewest since recording three at UNC Greensboro…Holley's goal moves her into a tie with Priest for third on the team with 8 points…Emerson Layne and Juliauna Hayward led the team with three shots apiece…Kansas' 18 fouls were the most by an opponent this season…Nytes now has 16 career shutouts at CU and 22 career wins…CU was without leading scorer Shyra James due to injury.

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez
On the Holley goal –
"It was going to be a goal like that, that won it and I'm really proud of the group and the way they battled on a Sunday with some heat. I want to give credit to the great crowd. It was a fantastic crowd out here today. We're really going to need them again next Saturday against TCU."

On offensive pressure – "We moved some people around and we changed tactics halfway through the game. The team really bought in, and we created a lot of chances. It was a great individual effort, but an individual effort from like five people to get that goal. It was a good performance."

On using the momentum – "You have to win in this league, especially at home. We to take advantage of being at home. We'll have to build momentum as it's a single-game week. We have a whole week to prepare. We're excited for next Saturday."

On Holley's knack for game-winning goals – "If you work hard, good things happen. I was really pleased with how we kept the ball alive. I'm not sure if it was Faith on the diving header, but we talk about how sometimes you have to be brave and put your face where other people don't want to put their foot, and kept it alive. Jace just doing the work and putting herself in a dangerous spot. They all count the same, so I'm really proud of the effort, but there were like three or four players on that play that kept it alive to get us the game-winning goal."

I was at the game - I've missed three this season so far and was thus glad to get back to Prentup. Honestly, I felt CU was lucky to win. Their attack lack creativity and looked to rely on long balls. There were very few quality chances created. At the same time KU's #4 got behind CU defense and it took two stellar saves by Jordan Nytes to keep the score at 0-0 which gave the Buffs a chance to win later on which they took advantage of when Jacy Holley won a scramble to put poke the ball in.

kind of thought the same thing. Thought Kansas had the run of the game and Nytes saved their bacon several times

I have to miss thee TCU match due to being out of town this weekend. I'd love to transfer my ticket to someone who would like to attend. CU hosts TCU at noon on Saturday.
