BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's volleyball team has shown strides in progress this season, which will be tested this weekend at home with matchups against No.14 Oregon on Friday at 7 p.m. and against Oregon State Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Buffs strides were on display this past weekend when the team, short-handed a hitter, hit a season-high .358 against No.2 Stanford. The set-score doesn't show the true story, as CU fell by just seven points in three sets against one of the best teams in the nation. The hitting percentage was the best against the Cardinals this season, while the 53 kills were the third-most Stanford faced and the 17.66 kills per set was four kills per set more than any other opponent had been able to score on Stanford.
...

SCOUTING THE DUCKS: Oregon comes to town as the 14th-ranked team in the nation. The Ducks have an interesting schedule with huge keys match victories and some interesting losses. Oregon started 0-2 after losing to No.3 Texas and No.2 Nebraska, then defeated then-No.1-ranked Minnesota in the Pac-12 vs. BIG TEN Challenge in Stanford. In the same tournament they fell to fifth-ranked Penn State in a sweep. In conference play the Ducks defeated No. 22 Washington State in five, then fell to No. 24 Arizona in five at home the next week. That same weekend Oregon fell to unranked Arizona State in a sweep. In this past weekend the Ducks resurged with sweeps on the road against No.17 UCLA and No.12 USC.

Oregon is one of the most offensively explosive team in the nation. The team is ranked fourth in the nation in assists per set and fifth in kills per set with nearly 15 kills per set. The Ducks are also second in the conference in digs per set with more than 17 digs per set. The team is led by Ronika Stone and Taylor Borup as of late. Both have been named a conference player of the week, with Borup earning it last weekend after posting 23 kills with a hitting percentage greater than .310 and a pair of double-doubles against UCLA and USC. Stone leads the team with 180 kills and is hitting .350 this season in the middle. Freshman Lindsey Vander Weidi is second on the team with 177 kills. Vander Weidi was named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week the first weekend of conference play with 36 kills and 47 digs. Senior setter August Raskie leads the team with 701 assists. On the defensive end, Stone leads the team with 77 total blocks. Freshman Brooke Nuneviller has been named Pac-12 Freshman of the Week twice this season and leads the team with 268 digs.

SCOUTING THE BEAVERS: Oregon State began the season with three-straight five-set matches, including a victory against No.21 Iowa State in Iowa. The Beavers only lost to Ole Miss in five and Kansas State in four, both on the road before the conference season began. The Beavers also defeated No.23 San Diego in five sets in San Diego before finishing against Seattle before Oregon came to town. The Beavers are winless in conference, including four-straight sweeps. The match prior to that saw Oregon State take No.13 Washington to five-sets at home.

Maddie Goings leads the Beavers with 228 kills, while Amy Underdown is second on the team with 210. Up front, Maddy Gravley has 77 blocks to lead the team, while Lindsey Schell has 65. Grace Massey was the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week to open the season, while Maddie Sheehan was named the Freshman of the Week the final weekend of non-conference play. Massey leads the team and the nation with 318 digs. Sheehan leads the team with 543 assists.

Sometime libero Gabby Carta-Samuels unfortunately in street clothes this match. (She's been fighting injuries all season.)

Anyse Smith is back in the lineup after missing both of last week's matches.

Buffs come back from an early 4-5 point deficit to take a narrow 14-13 lead in the 2nd set. Timeout Ducks.

(The 1st set was VERY disappointing, as the Buffs had 11 hitting errors off only 1 Duck Block. Evidently 3 typical starters for Oregon not playing tonight for some reason.)

Buffs got up 2 again, but 3 straight by the ducks leads to another CU timeout. ducks up 22-23.

Buffs can't close out a few set point opportunities, then have 2 sloppy plays in a row to lose a LONG 2nd set 30-32. Now down 0-2 in sets.

ducks closed in some, but Buffs on another run to go up 11-5. oregon takes their 2nd timeout.

Buffs down 8-12 in the 4th after a 5 point duck run and call timeout. Get the 1st point after the timeout to close it to 3.

Buffs have to burn their 2nd and final timeout after yet another hitting error puts them down 10-16.

Assume the team will find this one pretty disappointing, especially with 3 duck starters out. (At least per someone on Volleytalk, all 3 participated in the warm-ups, so it's assumed it was an off the court issue. Should be noted that, like in most sports (assume because of the Nike cache/ funded-facilities?), the Ducks recruit very well, so they are able to have a lot more depth than most teams have.)

The 11 CU hitting errors in the 1st and 8 in the 4th were killer, with all aspects (passing/ digging, setting and hitting) contributing to those numbers.

Again, as happened twice against Stanford, the Buffs ran out of subs in a crucial long set (#2 in this case, before either team had reached 25). Based on the limited production I'm seeing they're getting from having a serving sub come in when they don't have either of their middles serve, that may be something they might want to look at changing (at least not having a sub come in EVERY time the 2nd middle would serve).

Oh well- such is sports sometimes- they just need to brush this one off and win a CRUCIAL match Sunday against the beavers.

Buffs have to remember that one set does not make a match. It takes 3 sets to win and they must be prepared for 3 sets. They should have had Set 2. Were never in Sets 1 and 4.

Agree with Aztec that VB coaches need to develop the serve in a middle so they don't have to use up a sub each full rotation on that position as long as they plan on running the 6-2. Danielle served once or twice yesterday and did OK. Of course that's in part because the serving subs they brought in were so bad yesterday.

Don't think it is about the serve but pass receive. The middles usually do not receive well. I they did the same last year with Joss and the middles. bring in the the better pass receivers and diggers in the back. I think not having a great libero and besides Alexis and are fire pac 12 outside hitter and opposite. It is coming to light with the bigger more talented teams.

Congrats to Ms. Abu, and the team for the sweep.!

Now on to the desert for a couple more huge matches as the Buffs work to get back to .500 in Pac play and buff up their RPI!

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball senior Naghede Abu made history by becoming just the second player in school history to record 500 career blocks Sunday afternoon in a sweep (25-18, 25-20, 28-26) of Oregon State at the CU Events Center.

The moment came early in the third set when Abu put down a solo block to give CU the lead at 5-4. Earlier this season Abu became the all-time rally scoring leader in blocks, but with the historic milestone behind her Abu chases only Meghan Barkman who finished her career with 565 total blocks.

Abu was dominant for the Buffs on both ends in the sweep, finishing with a team-high .533 hitting percentage with nine kills. Abu was joined on the offensive end by Alexa Smith, who led the team with 12 kills, while Justine Spann added nine kills of her own.

Smith was everywhere against the Beavers, posting 17 points with her dozen kills. She also had a career-high four aces and a pair of block assists.

Setter Brynna DeLuzio posted her third double-double of the season with a team-high 19 assists and 11 digs. Jenna Ewert added 13 assists.

Defense was the story as the Buffs posted eight and a half blocks in the sweep. Abu led the team with six blocks, while five other CU women added a pair of block assists. Colorado's wall helped hold Oregon State to a .175 hitting percentage. Anything that could make it past was cleaned up by Rachel Whipple with a team-high 13 digs.

QUOTABLES:

Coach Jesse Mahoney

On today's match
"I thought we played really well. We had some lapses from time-to-time, but we were always able to build a nice lead and then kind of get our feet underneath us at the end of sets to close it out. I thought that our passing was a little rough early on but got better as the match went on. They targeted Rachel (Whipple) and she withstood the challenge. She played really well. They did everything we thought they would do and when we executed our game plan I thought that we had a lot of success. It was a good match. Sweeps are tough to come by in this conference so we'll take them when we can get them."

On going into next weekend
"We're 3-5 in conference play right now, this is a conference where anyone can beat anybody. We have to be the 'anyone who beats anybody' next weekend. We've given a few games up early, especially at home. We need to find some wins on the road to right that. Last season we were at .500 at the mid-point, now we're battling to get there. Our focus is about getting better every week and we'll have to get better this next week because Arizona and Arizona State are really good, especially at home."

Brynna DeLuzio

On the effectiveness of the team's good passing
"The first game we started out strong. It helped us build that gap. In the second game we started to struggle a little bit more, but coming down to the third set we played really well and that lead us to our final points."

Naghede Abu

On reaching 500th block milestone
"It feels amazing. I know there have been some really good middle blockers ahead of me. So, for me to get that honor is amazing."

On what the sweep means
"For me, it means nothing. Like Jesse (Mahoney) says, 'Arizona and Arizona State are really good.' Oregon State is a very good team so it was good to be able to beat them in three sets. But, we have really good teams coming up so that really means nothing."

UP NEXT: The Buffs head out to Arizona to take on Arizona and Arizona State. Both teams were ranked this weekend with Arizona claiming the 23rd spot and Arizona State taking the 25th position. The Buffs play in Tucson at 8 p.m., then head to Tempe to take on Arizona State Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. Both matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.

I'm only talking one rotation. Last season MB Anna Pfefferle served and played in the back row only as long as she continued to serve. Then she was replaced by the Libero. This season neither MB is serving so they bring in a sub for Danielle Price (Lillie Klemmer in todays OSU match) to do what Anna did last season. This is the substitution pattern that I am referring to. When a game is tight, with a lot of side outs each way, and goes into extra points, Jesse has run out of subs at least twice recently. If he did not use that serving sub for the MB2, he would have still had several subs left in his pocket.
