BOULDER — Colorado volleyball enters new territory in school history with its seventh and eighth consecutive match against top-25 opponents this weekend when No.12 UCLA comes to town Friday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Buffaloes (4-6 Pac-12) have lost six-straight, the fourth-longest such streak in CU's Pac-12 history, while the Bruins (9-3) come to Boulder having won four-straight against both Arizona schools. The eight-matches against ranked opponents is not only the most in CU volleyball history but also the most in school history for any sport.

SCOUTING THE BRUINS

The Bruins have defeated every opponent they've face at least once with key wins against Washington, Washington State and Oregon. In those three matches UCLA split the weekend. The Bruins have swept Cal, Arizona State and Arizona. The only five-set match was the team's win against Washington.

UCLA is led by All-American Mac May at outside hitter. She has the Bruins in the top-30 in the NCAA in kills per set with as the team averages a conference-best 14 kills per set. May's 4.49 kills per set is second in the conference and 19th in the nation, while she also is 16th in points per set as she is 82nd in the nation in aces per set. UCLA also has the second-best libero in the conference in Zoe Fleck with 4.27 digs per set.

The Bruins have a run three different setters this season, Kate Lane, Devon Chang and Audrey Pak. Lane leads the trio with 249 assists, but Pak has the most assists per set in their 6-2 offense with seven. Upfront, Emily Ryan has a team-best 1.21 blocks per set.

Matches Notes - Not available as I type this.

This match started a bit ago, and the Buffs just lost the 1st set 17-25. (I'm no expert, but from what little I know, looks like the serve receive (AKA passing), was very rough in this set. As has been some what of a trend, the Buffs were close for awhile (I believe they may have just been down 14-16), but the later part of the set belonged to the opponent.

A few notes:
  • Looks like middle blocker Rachael Fara is still out after also missing last Sunday's match.
  • In the 1st set, the Buffs played in a 5-1 (one setter) system. At the start of this 2nd set, Deluzio has taken off the libero jersey and is starting at setter, so I'd guess the plan is to play this set in a 6-2 (2 setter) system, as the team did for the 1st time this season last Sunday.
  • The announcer mentioned last set that this run of possibly/ hopefully 8 straight matches against top 25 teams is not just a volleyball record; it's the 1st time ANY Buff team has faced this challenge.
Note- The Buffs are also having issues early in the 2nd set, and they're down 2-5.

The Buffs tie it up 1-1 with a 25-23 2nd set win. (The Buffs were down almost the whole set, including late (18-22), but come back strong!)

After it being tied at 13, the bruins pull away some and get the 3rd set 25-19 to go up 2-1.

In what was eerily close to set 3, the Buffs hang tough through approximately the halfway point (it was tied at 14) of set 4, but UCLA finishes strong to comfortably get the set 25-19 and match 3-1.

Hope the team comes back strong on Sunday.

way too many mistakes. Seems like they compete well then they give up 3 or 4 points in a row and the set is over. Really disappointing

GREAT comeback in set 1, as the Buffs rally back from a 7-16 deficit to win it 27-25.

Freshman outside hitter Maya Tabron came in during the set and, if I remember correctly, helped provide support with 2 service runs.

BOULDER — Colorado volleyball put together its best match of the season Sunday afternoon, rallying back from a slow start to upset No.12-ranked UCLA by a score of 3-1 (27-25, 23-25, 25-22, 25-20) here.

The Buffs (5-7 Pac-12) overcame being down 14-5 to the Bruins (10-4 Pac-12) to start the first set and rallied back behind freshman Maya Tabron to take the first set 27-25. The freshman played her first significant time for CU and was key to a 7-0 run in the first set that started with her on the service line and included an ace. She then made starts in the next three sets, playing all six rotations for the rest of the match.

During the Chalk Talk, Jesse talked about how the team needed to handle UCLA's tips better than they had on Friday. They certainly did.

One of the best deceptive moves in volleyball - its extremely effective in the men's game as well.
Oh and the damn setter dump too.
