The soccer team (8-4-3 overall, 2-3-1 in Pac 12 play) is back in Boulder for maybe it's biggest/ most fun challenge of the season as they face off against the # 1 ranked UCLA Bruins (13-1-0, 5-1-0 ) this Thursday and #15 USC (9-2-1, 5-1-0) on Sunday.

In a sign of how late we are in the season, after this weekend there is only one home match remaining- vs. Utah on November 4th.

Thursday's match is scheduled to be available a free CU provided live stream, while Sunday's is on the Pac 12 Networks' L.A. channel. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

BOULDER – It's crunch time for Colorado soccer.

The Buffaloes (8-4-3, 2-3-1 Pac-12) have three home matches remaining in the 2022 season, starting on Thursday with No. 1 UCLA (3 p.m. MT).

Colorado is coming off a disappointing loss at Arizona, where the team failed to score for the first time all season. The dropped contest left the Buffs with seven points in the Pac-12 standings and looking to gain ground.

"When we talk about the Pac-12, we've talked about how there's a lot of opportunities," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "That's what we have coming up this weekend. We know how good UCLA is – the No. 1 team in the country. It's a great opportunity at home."

CU has never beaten a No. 1 ranked team in the team's 27-year history. The Buffs are 0-9-0 all-time against top-ranked opponents. Colorado has a recent history with No. 1 opponents, having hosted No. 1 Florida State last season. The Seminoles got out to a 2-0 second-half lead, but Allie Palangi found the net in the last third of the match, forcing FSU to fend off a Buffs' comeback.

"We look at every conference game as an NCAA Tournament game and tomorrow is no different," Sanchez added. "Obviously, UCLA has had a great season and is deserving of the ranking with what they've done both in and out of the conference. It is a little different [than FSU] in the sense that we have a hard time getting top teams to come here for non-conference. Pac-12 teams don't have a choice. I think that the motivation, the attention to detail and the focus will be similar to what it was last year."

UCLA (13-1-0, 5-1-0 Pac-12) is coming off its first setback of the season, dropping its match last week to then No. 9 Stanford, 1-0. The Bruins held onto the top ranking despite the loss, marking the seventh consecutive week they have occupied the top spot. The Bruins lead the Pac-12 in goals (40) and points (116) this season and continued to be backed by goalkeeper Lauren Brzykcy.

"They went on the road and beat Duke and North Carolina," Sanchez noted. "They slipped up against Stanford on the road for its only loss. It's a very good team. Having said that, we've been very good at home. We're excited about this opportunity."

CU's previous ranked matchups this season have all resulted in draws. CU went into No. 9 BYU and earned a 2-2 tie. The Buffs also tied on the road against No. 15 Washington State.

"The longer the game goes, the better it will be for us," Sanchez mentioned. "I think that's just common sense for any team when you play a highly ranked team. We have to come out and play with confidence. We've talked a lot about that this week. Sometimes when you play a highly-ranked team, there's almost less pressure. Every little thing you do well, you feel good about it. We have to play well if we hope to get a result."

Thursday's match will be streamed on CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc. It's the team's annual Kick Out Cancer match. The Buffs will be sport pink accessories.

The first 500 fans through the gates will also get a voucher for free In-Out at the game.

Match recently began, and UCLA is already on the board after a goal in the 2nd minute.

Buffs are trying hard in this one, and are getting a decent amount of possession, but for the 2nd time a Bruin has successfully teed up a beautiful shot from beyond the box and scored with multiple defenders close by (but obviously not close enough), with this one being in the 17th minute.

I have not watched much of the team play this year.
I hate they long ball stuff. As soon as the keeper punts it, its a 50/50 ball.
Control the ball, control the game. Unless our talent is that far below, UCLA.
I am not sure it is

0-6 was the final.

Just need to quickly look at the film of this one to see what if anything can be learned and then get ready for the Trojans.

Nice point for the Buffs today against the #15 Trojans. (Didn't get to watch the match, but based on the disparity in shots (6-21 advantage for USC) and shots on goal (3 vs. 11), assume the team has to be satisfied with the result. Also from the stats, CU must have been FEISTY in this one, as they were in total given 4 yellow cards at 4 different times (3 to different players and 1 to the team), all for being "Unsporting".)

CU was very feisty and marked much better than in recent matches. They played with much more confidence as well. They were a bit unfortunate to give up the tying goal which came off an attempted clearance. The Buffs should be very pround of themselves, they played a different system than they had previously and didn't let the loss to UCLA impact them.

Civana can finish and what a nice pass from Jade who carried the ball out of the back. Notice that Civana scores with her left foot.

What a difference a few days makes. CU looked dead in the water during their 0-6 loss to UCLA on Thursday afternoon. They conceded the first goal in the second minute and the floodgates were opened. But on Sunday v USC, Danny Sanchez completely changed the system going to a 5-3-2 with much more man marking. The system change combined with a positive attitude by the players led to a competitive 1-1 draw that was one play away from winning.

Prior to Sunday’s match, the Buffs had played more of a zonal marking system which gave quality opposition a lot of time and space on the ball in the attacking third without much pressure on the ball. The result was not only giving a lot of scoring chances to the opposition, but limiting their own by not challenging for the ball in midfield. Looking at the record since the schedule became competitive it’s clear this strategy wasn’t working.

Switching to a 5-3-2 was part of the change, against USC the Buffs also put more pressure on the ball higher up the pitch which limited USC quality chances in the final third. The back line consisted of - L to R - Rachel Rosen, Jayden Newkirk, Kayleigh Webb, Lawson Willis, Amaya Gonzalez. Webb, playing center back for the first time since her freshman season, was outstanding. She had several critical tackles and blasted all the goal kicks she took. She organized the back line and was vocal.

Starting in goal was Bella Grust who came up with a huge intervention in the second half in which she was injured but was able to continue to play. For the game, she was credited with nine saves.

CU’s goal was once again the result of an outstanding finish by Civana Kuhlmann. Jade Babcock-Chi collected a ball deep in CU’s defensive end and carried it with no pressure until she found Kuhlmann who took a couple of touches before blasting a left-footed shot into the back of the net. Kuhlmann is definitely a next level finisher. Fortunately for her, there was a scout from the Washington Spirit in the stands.

With Kuhlmann’s goal coming in the 38th minute the Buffs had to hold on for a long time to preserve a victory. Predictably USC was able to produce shots on goal, but many of them were easy saves. Interestingly, USC’s goal was the result of an attempt by Hannah Sharts to clear a flighted ball which popped right to USC’s Aaliyah Farmer’s head in the 75th minute.

Kudos to the coaching staff and players for executing a new system with little time to train between games. The Buffs should consider keeping Webb at center back for the final three matches of the season.

0-4 loss. Cal's second goal was a back breaker as Bella Grust had saved a PK but didn't hold it. The rest of the team was a step slow in getting to the ball, etc., and thus a Cal player put the rebound across the mouth of the goal for an easy tap in by a teammate.

Sorry I didn't get a thread started for this weekend's matches.

The Buffs are down 0-1 to the #7 Stanford Cardinal with around 18 minutes left in the match. (Coverage is on the Pac 12 Bay Area channel.)

The Last regular season match is scheduled for next Friday at 3:00 as the Buffs host the Utes.
