SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
California comes into the weekend ranked No. 20 in the nation. The Bears are 8-2-1 overall and tied with CU for fifth place in the Pac-12 with a 1-1-1 conference mark. They own wins over No. 24 Santa Clara (2-1) and No. 14 Oklahoma State (3-0). In conference play, they won 1-0 at Washington, before drawing 1-1 with Arizona State and falling 1-0 to Arizona at home.

Stanford enters the weekend ranked No. 2 in the country and boasts a 10-1-0 record, including a perfect 3-0-0 in the Pac-12. The Cardinal have won eight consecutive matches after a 3-2 loss to No. 8 Florida early in the season. During a three-match stretch against Navy, San Francisco and Yale, Stanford outscored its opponents 22-0. The Cardinal also have a 4-0 win over No. 10 Georgetown and have defeated Washington State, Arizona and Arizona State in Pac-12 play.

And 0-1 is the final.

Buffs actually looked the better team in this one, at least the half I saw. (Buffs lead in shots 14-7, shots on goal 6-5 and corners 3-0.)

Kind of a bummer also- I didn't see the 1st half, but the announcers said the Cal goal was after one of the Buffs central defenders went down temporarily injured so CU was evidently short handed for just long enough for Cal to score. (The defender Cardenas was playing the 2nd half, so thankfully nothing significant appears to be wrong with her.)

Well- just need to re-group and get ready for the cardinal.

BOULDER - Colorado was edged 1-0 by No. 20 California on Thursday in Pac-12 soccer action at Prentup Field. The Buffs dropped to 7-3-3 overall and 1-2-1 in the Pac-12, while the Bears improved to 9-2-1 and 2-1-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Cal struck first in the middle of a defensive-oriented first half. Kailee Gifford connected on one touch from the right side of the box after a cross from Kayla Fong to give the Bears a 1-0 lead.

The Buffs put several strong shots on goal in the second half, but were unable to penetrate the net. Megan Massey hit a floating rocket in the 46th minute that took a leaping save to prevent a goal. Hannah Cardenas's shot from the top of the box in the 73rd minute had to be pushed over the bar with one hand for a save.

KEY STATISTICS: Jalen Tompkins made four saves for CU, which outshot Cal 14-7. The Buffs dominated play in the second half, holding a 10-3 shot advantage after halftime.

UP NEXT: CU hosts No. 2 Stanford on Sunday at noon at Prentup Field. It will be the first-ever Pride game in support of the LGBTQ community. In addition, CU's live mascot Ralphie will run before kickoff.

Highlights-

Buffs hanging tough, but the cardinal got one by the goalie with a pretty short shot in the 32nd minute.

KEY STATISTICS: Stanford outshot CU 26-4 in the match, including 14-2 in the first half. Tompkins played the first 66 minutes and made five saves, while allowing two goals. Taylor Kornieck had CU's only shot on goal and Megan Massey had two shot attempts, but neither was on goal.

NOTES: CU dropped to 0-8 all-time against Stanford ... the Buffs have played three nationally-ranked teams in the past five matches and are 0-3 in those matches (1-0-1 vs. non-ranked teams during that stretch).

UP NEXT: CU hits the road to play at No. 6 Southern California on Friday. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. MT in Los Angeles.

Hitting roughly the half way point of conference play after next week's match against #6 and defending NCAA champion USC (that will be the 6th of 11 matches), that match will end the Buffs play against the 4 Pac teams currently ranked (generally HIGH) in the Top 25. Hopefully, they can get a great win against the Trojans next week, which could start an opportunity for a winning streak through the later part of conference play. (Of course, one way or the other, every Pac team is a threat, so there won't be any easy matches through the year, but it should be easIER.)
