The article linked to below (also in another thread), in addition to discussing the team's great offensive start, went over this weekend's two opponents, UT- San Antonio (UTSA) and ISU, so I'm using that preview as a basis of starting a matches thread for them.

Go Buffs!

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
CU hosts a much-improved UTSA squad on Friday at 4 p.m. at Prentup Field. First-year head coach Derek Pittman has guided the Roadrunners to a 2-1-0 start after they went just 3-14-0 last year.

UTSA edged Northwestern State 1-0 to open the season, and after a 1-0 loss at Texas State, won 2-0 at Oral Roberts this past weekend. Freshman Lexi Bolton has two of the team's three goals. Goalkeeper Michelle Cole has stopped 12 of 13 shots and has a 0.33 GAA.

CU won 2-0 in San Antonio last season against the Roadrunners with Puketapu and Kornieck both scoring second-half goals. That was the first-ever matchup between the two schools.

The Buffs will host Iowa State at noon on Sunday. The Cyclones have not gotten off to the start UTSA has with a 1-3-0 record, but their three losses have all been decided by one goal.

ISU opened the season with a 2-0 win over South Dakota State, but suffered a 2-1 overtime loss to Missouri on an own goal, a 1-0 loss to Northwestern, and a 2-1 defeat at Purdue in the 90th minute. Four different players have scored the team's four goals.

CU has dominated the all-time series against its former Big 12 rival, owning a 13-2-1 record vs. the Cyclones. The two teams last met in 2015 with CU winning 2-1 in overtime at Prentup Field. Iowa State has not won in the series since 2001 and CU has a three-game winning streak and 10-game unbeaten streak.

WEEKEND PROMOS
Friday's game vs. UTSA is a Buffs fanny pack giveaway. Fans can receive two premium tickets and two CU fanny packs for $20 with the promo code BUFFSPACK. Sunday vs. Iowa State is the annual Touch-A-Truck game with first-responder vehicles on-hand for fans to explore prior to kickoff. It is also a Wear White game.

BOULDER—Senior Scout Watson recorded her first career solo shutout on Friday, helping Colorado blank the UTSA Roadrunners, 4-0. The shutout continues the Buffaloes' streak, holding the opposition scoreless for the consecutive game to open the season.

Junior Tatum Barton led the offense for the second consecutive game. She followed up her hat-trick performance against Missouri with another two goals on Friday. Senior Jorian Baucom registered her second goal as a Buff and a late own goal rounded out the scoring.
...

UP NEXT: Colorado will host former Big 12 rival Iowa State, at Prentup Field, on Sunday at 12 p.m. Sunday's game is the annual Touch-A-Truck game with first-responder vehicles on-hand for fans to explore prior to kickoff. It is also a Wear White game.

Notes: Watson earned her first career solo shutout, having had 11 career combined shutouts…Barton matches Nikki Marshal for most goals over a two-game stretch (5). Marshall had five combined goals Sept. 1 and Sept 3 vs. Clemson and Mississippi in 2006…Colorado's shutout streak is tied for fourth-longest in program history. The Buffaloes have had three previous four-game streaks...Kornieck notched another assist on Friday, placing her 8th in program history with 13 career helpers. She has a career-best six assists on the season.

QUOTABLE:

Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On overall performance
"It was a dangerous match for us. I thought we brought good energy. We had a good early goal from Tatum [Barton]. We were happy with the 1-0 lead, but we knew that was dangerous. I was really pleased with our second half. I thought we created a lot more opportunities. The second goal by Tatum was good. The third goal from Katie [Joella] to Jorian [Baucom] was well played. The last goal was a little unfortunate for UTSA, but we were putting some pressure on, so I think it was coming. At the end of the day, a 4-0 win at home against a solid, well-coached team is good to keep the momentum going into Sunday against Iowa State."

On the play of Watson and the defense
"I thought Scout [Watson] dealt with everything. She made the early save which she pushed off the crossbar. We could have been down 1-0 in the first five minutes. I felt after that moment the backend was very good. I thought everybody back there was a solid cohesive unit. It was a good performance, but we know we are going to face some more pressure on Sunday."

On Jorian Baucom and Tatum Barton
"I thought Jorian played hard and deserved to get a goal. So, we are pleased with that. Tatum has put herself in good spots to score goals. Obviously, Taylor [Kornieck] is kind of spearheading everything from a deeper lying spot. It was a good overall performance. We can clean up the midfield a bit, but it was good momentum going into Sunday."

Highlights (featuring Jorian Baucom interview) -

Saw most of the match in person (left early to head the Rocky Mountain Beatdown). Buffs at times looked vulnerable when UTSA was moving the ball quickly on the attach. This was in part due to the fact that the Buffs are without Hannah Cardenas and Erin Greening as will as Alex Vidger was was dismissed from the team. So in tis match three freshmen started on the backline (Sofia Weiner, Jesse Loren and Kayleigh Webb) along with Kelsey Aaknes. It's most likely going to take some time to get them all playing with confidence and poise.

On the flip side, the attack continues to hum along. And of course Tatum Barton is very often in the right place and the right time. She is very confident at this point.

Buffs should beat Iowa State tomorrow.

GOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL Kornieck!!!!!!!!!!

From live stats - "
3:37 1st
GOAL by COLO Kornieck, Taylor (FIRST GOAL).
"

(The announcer said, I believe, assist to Aaknes.)

GGOOOAAALLLL Baucom!!!

"
8:06 1st
GOAL by COLO Baucom, Jorian.; shot on the ground into left corner of the goal
"

(Live stats not showing assists, but assume Barton, at minimum, earned one on this goal.)

Damn. Making up for the egg they laid on offense in the opener.

With at least a couple Buffs downed recently by injury, great to see junior Camilla Shymka came in late in the 1st half for her 1st action of the season. (I went to the Gold and Black scrimmage, and she needed a lot of help to get to the locker room after an apparent leg injury, so assume she's been recovering since then.)

Oh oh - Kornieck has to be helped off the field after hustling to make a couple headers to advance the attack. (She was hopping on one leg before staff could get out to help her, so would guess ankle or foot injury- hopefully nothing too severe.)

Goal Loren!!!!

The freshman with her 1st as a Buff on a header (with assist to another frosh- Groark)!

"
59:24 2nd
Header GOAL by COLO Loren, Jesse; Assist by Groark, Emily; Goal number 1 for season.; header in the middle of the box off of corner

BOULDER – For the second straight game, Colorado scored in the first five minutes as the Buffs cruised to a 3-1 win over Iowa State on Sunday at Prentup Field. CU improved to 4-0-1 this season, while ISU dropped to 1-4-1.
...

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado outshot Iowa State 18-9 in the game and had a 9-3 advantage on corner kicks. The Buffs also had nine shots on goal.

NOTES: It was the fifth time in CU history that the Buffs have scored two or more times in the first 10 minutes and first time CU has done that in back-to-back games ... Baucom has now scored in back-to-back games ... Kornieck's goal was the 20th of her career and she ranks seventh in CU history in goals scored ... Loren's goal was the first of her career.

UP NEXT: CU hits the road to play at Marquette at 6 p.m. MT on Thursday.

Regarding Buff soccer in the polls, wanted to note there's still not much notice of the team in the main (coaches) poll (http://unitedsoccercoaches.org/web/...NCAA_DI_WOMEN/web/rankings/ncaa/di_women.aspx), but the Buffs did finally get at least a few (three) votes for I believe the 1st time since the season started. (They had 17 votes in the preseason poll, but the tie with CSU cost them those.)

On the positive side, topdrawersoccer (https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/college-soccer-national-rankings/women) seems to have a better opinion of the Buffs, as they've moved them into the Top 25, at #23, for the 1st time this season.

Hope the team can keep the performance up (and keep healthy)!

Voters see the other polls and the others receiving votes. It makes them aware. So now every week should move our Buffs up above teams in front of us who drop a match. Any big wins should vault the team in the ranks.

Looks like Marquette is better than its record - pretty brutal schedule. But it's a road game we've got to win.

At Michigan State on Sunday is the big one, though. A win there should vault our Buffs into the rankings.

At this point, I don't think rankings matter much. At least not to me. If CU wins their last four non-conference matches they most likely will be ranked in all the polls.

Let's face it, what's really gonna make a difference in terms of perception about this team is how they do in conference play. The Pac 12 is brutal in women's soccer and thus finishing in the top three or so in the conference play is really something to be proud of.

Let's hope Taylor is okay and ready to go for the two matches this week. She's been terrific this season; really making a difference for her teammates.
