DENVER – Colorado will take to Ciber Field at the University of Denver for the second time this season on Sunday (1 p.m.). The Buffaloes will renew its rivalry with the Pioneers, playing for the 27th time in series history.
Colorado (4-3-0) has had more success against the Pioneers than any other opponent in program history. CU owns a 17-8-1 all-time record versus Denver, including a current nine-game wins streak. The last time the Buffs didn't get a result against the Pioneers came in a 1-0 loss on Nov. 16, 2013, at DU.
"DU is a very good team," head coach Danny Sanchez explained. "They will be the favorites in the Summit League by a mile. They've had some up and down results. They beat Utah. Had a disappointing loss to Grand Canyon but turned around and beat Northern Arizona 6-2. They are very well-coached as we all know."
Typically, the series has been closely contested between the two sides. Of the previous 26 meetings, only six matches have been decided by two or more goals. The last nine meetings have all been within two goals, except for a 6-1 Colorado win in 2017.
"[Sunday] will be like every other DU game since I've been here except for one," Sanchez added. "They have all been nip and tuck until the end. Whoever plays well and finds those moments to be special will be who wins."
Last year's meeting saw the Buffs prevail in the 97th minute in Boulder. The game kicked off the unusual 2020 season in February, ending fittingly in an own goal.
Denver (5-3-0) dropped its match against Washington State (2-0) to start the weekend on Thursday. The Pioneers have outscored their opponents 22-13 this season, but have allowed more than one goal in each of its last four games.
CU previously beat Colorado College 1-0 in overtime at DU. Shyra James scored the game-winner in the Buffs' de facto season-opener.
Sunday's match is going to be live-streamed online (CUBuffs.com/WatchSoc). A subscription is required to access the stream.
