Best wishes to the volleyball team as they host their final three non-conference matches of the season at the 2018 Colorado Classic, with CSU the finale for that part of the schedule Saturday evening!

Hope some folks hang out after the football game and catch some (usually VERY competitive) vball against the rival Rams (starting at 8:00 PM), and/ or catch the Buffs against Indiana State (starting at 10:00 AM) before football. (Note special parking instructions for the Saturday matches in the 2nd paragraph quoted below from the preview article.)

SCOUTING THE VIKINGS: Portland State has had a rough start to the season, winning its first match against Long Beach State in a sweep, then losing eight-straight matches, including five in sweeps. The Vikings are led by Jenna Mullen with 93 kills this season. The team has allowed 69 aces this season and more than 75 blocks, while having just under 50 blocks this season as a team. Libero Mackenzie Sullivan is averaging four digs per set, while Katy Wilson has 32 blocks this season.

SCOUTING THE SYCAMORES: The Sycamores are 6-3 entering the Colorado Classic. Two of the team's three losses have come in five-set matches against Central Michigan and Oakland. The team also was swept by Tennessee, but has wins against Green Bay and Saint Louis, both matches going five-sets as well. Indiana State is led by Laura Gross, who is averaging nearly three kills per set. The setter Makayla Knoblauch has 368 assists, nearly 10 per set. On defense, the backrow is split with a pair of players with nearly 150 digs in Jade York and Nikkie White. Up front, middle Damadj Johnson leads the way with 47 of the team's 77.5 blocks this season.

SCOUTING THE RAMS: The in-state rivalry continues, this time in Boulder. Last year's comeback loss in Fort Collins will be sure to be on the team's mind, as the Rams enter with a 6-3 record. Against then-No.12 ranked Illinois in the season and home opener the Rams fell in five-sets, a team that the Buffs were swept by. The two other losses have come from Cincinnati in four at home and to No.20 Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Key wins have come against LSU in a sweep, as well as Florida State in five at home. Breana Runnels leads the Rams with 121 kills, followed closely by Kirstie Hillyer. Setter Katie Oleksak leads the team with 372 assists, nearly 11 per set. The team has been solid serving, with three individuals with 10 or more aces this season. On the defense end Maddi Foutz leads with 104 digs, while the up front defense has come from Hillyer and Paulina Hougaard-Jensen. Hillyer leads with 45 blocks, while Hougaard-Jensen has 40. The two have combined for all but six of the Ram's blocks.

WHAT'S NEXT: Colorado opens Pac-12 conference play next Wednesday when it hosts Utah at 7 p.m. The Buffs will have a longer than normal break between matches, hosting the University of Southern California Sunday at 1 p.m. Wednesday's match is a player night, while USC will be a 'photos with Ralphie' day. Fans can come and get their picture with Ralphie an hour before the match.

(Great to see Naghede Abu in the video. Hopefully she's feeling healthier and close to returning.)

11-5 Buffs leads to 1st ps timeout.

GREAT to see all 3 players out last weekend (Abu, Price and Carta-Samuels) already in the action this evening.

Carta-Samuels serving run continuing causes psu to take their final timeout- 15-5 Buffs.

Buffs running away with set 3- 18-5. 2nd timeout for psu.

Note- csu had a similar easy time with the 4th team in this tournament, Indiana State, already having won their match 25-17, 25-14, 25-14.

After the Buffs starting substituting in A LOT of bench players, psu makes the score respectible, but the Buffs still complete the sweep with a 25-19 3rd set.

Keep it up Buffs!

With a double-header tomorrow, our Buffs needed an easy night. I'm always impressed when a team does what it's supposed to do and takes care of business.

Good match for Abu, Price and Carta-Samuels to work out the rust from their injuries. Hopefully this morning's match will go the same way and the bench players get lots of playing time so everybody is ready for CSU tonight.

Go Buffs!

Buffs had a 4-5 point lead early, isu closed within 1, and now the Buffs have stringed a few points together, leading to an isu timeout with CU up 18-14.

Buffs in trouble midway through the set at 12-15, but get a nice little run going to go up 16-15; to isu.

As with the 1st set, the Buffs own the later part of the SECOND set, and come back to take it 25-18.

(Looks like the stream folk are going to need to work on their replays, as they are missing lots of live action as they show replays of the last point.)

Not a pretty match overall, but the Buffs complete the sweep 25-23 in the 3rd. I believe weird things often happen in these weekend matinee matches, so a win is a win. (The team will need to play a LOT better (especially the block) and consistently (after only 4 hitting errors in the 1st, the Buffs had 10 in the 2nd and 11 in the third) to compete with csu this evening.)

Note- per the below, looks like Alexa Smith, who did have a very good match (19 kills hitting .471), will hopefully be joining the Buffs' 1,000 kill club sometime during the csu match this evening.

Agree about too many replays. I do like showing highlights during timeouts but I want to see match action live.

Match beginning. (Line-up switch to the starting lineup with Ewert showing as setter and Anyse Smith in as opposite/ rightside hitter. Assume the Buffs will still be in a 6-2 and Coach Mahoney might have adjusted for match-up purposes with csu personnel.)

Buffs went on a nice run to get a one point lead, but then csu responds, causing the Buffs to take another timeout down 16-19.
