VOLLEYBALL (4-3) continues its season hosting a 2nd straight 4 team tourney at the Events Center starting today as they try do end a tough 2 match losing streak where they twice took the opponent to 5 sets. This weekend should be another solid test as all 3 invited teams are coming to Boulder with winning records (and boasting a 14-4 combined overall record).

Starting things off for CU at this tourney (named the "Buffs Invitational") is a Friday night match with the UC-Irvine Anteaters (UC-I, 4-2), followed up with a Saturday night contest against the former Pac-12 conference-mate Cal Golden Bears (5-2), and finally ending up facing the Wyoming Cowgirls (5-0) Sunday afternoon.

Streams for ALL volleyball matches this weekend will be available for those with premium ($) ESPN+ subscriptions. (See more details and links near the bottom of this post.)

Note - For any big general volleyball fans, the other tourney matches this weekend at the Events Center that do NOT involve CU are as follows - Cal vs. Wyoming is Friday at 4:00 PM, Wyoming vs. UC-I is Saturday at 3:00 PM, and Cal. vs. UC-I is Sunday at 11:00 AM. Personally I'm very happy for those teams' fans that, as with last weekend, all these matches are also scheduled to be available to be watched on (ESPN+) streams. (Before that, CU would only stream matches they were involved in.)

Go Buffs!!!

The match began a bit ago, and the Buffs will need to play catchup as UC-I won the 1st 21-25. CU is up 10-9 in the 2nd.

nice win. got to find ways to not take every team to 5 sets. Did not see it as I was working but they have to come out better and play more consistent. We are seeing a young but talented team

This squad is definitely battle tested. Learning how to win and it feels to me that they could be pretty darn good by the latter part of the season.

BOULDER – The Colorado volleyball team (5-3) defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters (21-25, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20, 15-13) in the first match of Buffs Invitational at CU Events Center on Friday evening.

The Buffs and the Anteaters jousted for most of the match, with 20 ties scores and nine lead changes. Colorado took sets two and four by five points or more each and narrowly snatched the win in the fifth.

"Short version, we have to start better," head coach Jesse Mahoney. "We can't come into any match expecting to win and dip our toe into the water [to see] how hard we have to work, which we did in that first set. We hit negative for that set. We gave them seven or eight points right off the bat, and then it became a match. I liked a lot of our play in the middle and at the end of that match. But, if we want to be the team we want to be, we have to play at that level the minute we walk onto the floor."

Colorado out-blocked (13.0-10.5) and out-aced (6-3) UC Irvine, and the Buffs had four athletes in double-figure kills.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • So. MB Cayla Payne totaled 14 kills (5e, 31att), had three digs and seven blocks (one solo) on the night. Her first block of the match marked her 100th of her career. She also hit .588 on first ball offense.
  • Jr. MB Bella Simkus hit .400 on first ball, hitting .400 overall with four kills and no errors. She also matched her career-high in blocks with six.
  • So. OH Lily Dwinell had 12 kills (5e, 31att) with a 41% kill percentage, six digs and three blocks.
  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson had 48 assists for the Buffs, with nine digs and three blocks to boot.
  • So. OH Ana Burilovic notched 13 kills for Colorado, alongside nine digs and four blocks.
  • So. OH Sydney Jordan had 16 kills (6e, 45att), eight digs and two blocks.
  • Jr. DS/L Sarah Morton had 20 digs (66% dig percentage) and four assists, and So. DS/L Avery Bolles matched her career-high in digs with nine (69% dig percentage). Jr. DS/L Emilea Stepaniuk also dug 67% of the balls hit at her.
  • CLUTCH AWARD: So. S Rian Finley set two kills on three sets, and Colorado scored on four of her five serves (including an ace).
  • For the Anteaters, Hunter Riedl led both teams with 17 kills and Nicole Feliciano had 22 digs.
...

UP NEXT:
  • Colorado will face Cal in the next match of Buffs Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 14. First serve is set for 6 p.m. MT at CU Events Center. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ and links to watch are available at CUBuffs.com.
  • Mahoney on the upcoming matches: "We have to work hard to rest and recover, because we have two more really good teams here this weekend."

MATCH NOTES:
  • Colorado moves to 2-1 all-time against UC Irvine.
  • The Buffs get their fifth win of the season going 3-2 in five-set matches.
  • So. MB Cayla Payne reached 100 career blocks with her first block of the night.

Jesse said in the interview that it was a mistake to schedule UNC as it meant no practice this week. He likes playing the schools in Colorado but it needs to be a tournament not a mid week match.

He also said they need to learn start the match instead of letting a team get up 7 in Set 1.

He was so funny. The reporter said it looked like Cayla Payne was yelling at you. Jesse said Cayla yells at me a lot more than I yell at her. That's just who she is.

I was glad he said that about UNC because I think it was a mistake. That is too good of a team to schedule in the middle of the week before a tourney. He seemed pretty upset about how they started and played.

It's a SWEEP as the Buffs win the 3rd set 25-23. Must feel GREAT after 3 straight 5 setters and a Border War match with the Cowgirls pending tomorrow afternoon. (It did get a little nervy late in this set as CU was up 3-5 points most of the set, earned 5 match points after going up 24-19 and it was only the 5th they converted.)
Way to go Buffs!

Final match of the weekend on tap starting in about 2 hours.

And, media after last night's sweep -

"
BOULDER – The Colorado volleyball team (6-3) swept the California Golden Bears (25-18, 25-19, 25-23) in the Buffs Invitational at CU Events Center on Saturday.

The Buffs ran away with the first two sets, not letting the Bears score more than 19 points in either. Cal tried to force a fourth set, coming close in the third, but Colorado finished well and swept the Bears.

"I thought our team responded really well from our match last night and came out firing on all cylinders in that first set," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "Maybe some of the best offensive volleyball we played all season. We almost hit .400 against a really good team. Flip side of that is we let them hit roughly .300, so I still think we can defend a little bit better, but I was really happy with our game plan and how we executed it."

Colorado hit .394 against Cal, out-killing the Bears, 48-41. The teams were tied in total team blocks (4.0) and digs (38), and the Buffs out-aced the Golden Bears (7-2). The Buffs sideout percentage was 71%, and Colorado her the opponent out of system 60% of the time when serving.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • So. OH Ana Burilovic had 18 kills (4e, 32att, hitting .438) with a 53% kill percentage, leading both teams in kills. She also had three aces and three digs.
  • So. OH Sydney Jordan reached nine kills (2e, 22att, hitting .318) for Colorado. She also had an ace, six digs and a solo block.
  • Jordan on her performance: "My mindset today was just swinging high. I was lucky enough to get a lot of one-on-one opportunities. [Simpson] was setting me really well, and I think that I just kind of capitalized on those opportunities."
  • So. DS/L Avery Bolles had her first start in the libero jersey for the Buffs, notching a career-high 12 digs.
  • Bolles' on her performance: "My mindset today was really just, [on] every ball, play it as well as you can -- especially in serve receive. Feel like that's been a big focus in practice -- just play the ball that's coming at you first, and then worry about where you're supposed to be next."
  • So. OPP Lily Dwinell reached 12 kills (0e, 23att, hitting .522) with a 52% kill percentage and had one block
  • So. MB Cayla Payne notched seven kills (2e,13att, hitting .385) with a 54% kill percentage, one dig and one block.
  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson generated 42 kills on her sets for the Buffs and had three digs on the night.
  • Fr. DS/L Katie Salonga had five digs and a 71% dig percentage.
  • CLUTCH AWARD: So. S Rian Finley came in clutch for the Buffs for the second match in a row, serving two key aces for Colorado.
  • For the Golden Bears, Maggie Li led Cal with 15 kills and Payton DeJardin had 13 kills. Gianna Bartalo had 11 digs.
...

UP NEXT:
  • Colorado will face Wyoming in the last match of Buffs Invitational on Sunday, Sept. 15. First serve is set for 1 p.m. MT at CU Events Center. The match will be broadcast on ESPN+ and links to watch are available at CUBuffs.com.
  • Mahoney on Wyoming: "They've obviously played two really competitive matches this weekend. They are one of the better ball control teams that that we've seen so far. They pass really well, which puts a lot of stress on your block and defense. They have a really excellent setter, they run really fast offense. It's a team I would like two days during the week to prepare for, and we don't get that, so we're going to have to really dial in early and settle into the match tomorrow. But if we pass as well as we did tonight, and we are as offensive as we were tonight, I think we can compete with anybody."

MATCH NOTES:
  • Colorado rises to 19-7 all-time against Cal.
  • The Buffs get their sixth win of the season going 3-1 in three-set matches.
  • So. DS/L Avery Bolles reached a career-high 12 digs against the Golden Bears.

Toughending to this one. The Buffs lost the 3rd 19-25 and then got dominated 10-25 in the 4th to lose the match 1 set to 3.

Tough way to close out the weekend. I don't know if this is a tournament team this season, but there are several exciting young players on the roster worth watching. I can see .500 in Big XII play, but that won't be good enough to qualify for post-season play in the new conference. We don't have the benefit of playing in a top-2 conference any more. If the current sophomores stick around, we might have a squad that can fight for the conference crown in a year or two. It is nice to see Wyo and UNC in particular having success, but we have to win those in the future if we want to be in the tourney. Go Buffs, beat CSU!!

The team played poorly yesterday. I'm sure after all the matches they played last week, they had no legs to jump.

Yes, very talented sophomores. Jesse's players tend to stick around unless they graduate and play somewhere else for grad school.

I don't think it's realistic that they can beat CSU twice. I'm hoping for a split.
