Best wishes to the volleyball team as it opens its season at a tournament hosted by UNC- Charlotte!
(Note that the match tomorrow is an exhibition. I assume this is to avoid any bad RPI ramifications from officially playing against So. Carolina State, who didn't win a match in its last 2 seasons. Also wanted to note that all times in the thread title are Mountain.)

Go Buffs!!!

BOULDER – Colorado volleyball kicks off the 2021 season this weekend with a pair of matchups Saturday against Xavier at 11 a.m. and Charlotte at 4 p.m. MT.

Prior to that, the team will have an exhibition against South Carolina State Friday at 2 p.m. All matches will have live stats and the Charlotte match will be live streamed via CUSA.tv.

The 2021 Buffs have five new faces in freshmen, three of which have All-America honors coming from high school. The team is 19 strong with the only losses from last season being Rachael Fara and Elissa Alcantara. The team adds a middle, outside hitter, setter and a pair of defensive specialists/liberos to the fold to go along with a plethora of experienced athletes.
...

Colorado looks to get to a strong start on the road after going winless in opponent's houses in the abrupt conference-only season this spring. The Buffs have nine non-conference matches, including three opponents that had a winning record last season in Charlotte, Northern Colorado and Colorado State whom the team will place twice.

I'm going to spring for CUSA stream tomorrow for $6.95 for a day pass

South Carolina state match just started and it's 11-3 Buffs. Hitting -.347 vs. .667

Set 1 was the starters and first group of subs. Final score: 25-6

In Set 2 the 2nd team is playing. CU has 17 players suited up. The score is 21-8 right now.

However, the service error issue is continuing and that is not a reflection of the opponent. That is a reflection on CU. That's improved since I last looked 7 Aces, 4 Errors

Looking like the Buffs are cruising in this exhibition, with a 25-7 win in the 1st set, and a 25-9 win in the 2nd.

Buff starting lineups per live stats:

Set 1 -
"Colorado starters: Ewert,Jenna; Neverdowski,Zoe; DeLuzio,Brynna; Simkus,Bella; Hart,Meegan; Clayton,Leah; Schneggenburger,Jill"

Set 2 -
"Colorado starters: Lougeay,Katie; DeLuzio,Brynna; Simpson,Taylor; Simkus,Bella; Levaggi,Kelley; Hart,Meegan; Schneggenburger,Jill"

And the Buffs complete the scrimmage by winning the 3rd set 25-12.

Starting lineup for set 3 was (again per livestats) "Colorado starters: Campbell,Jahara; Tabron,Maya; Riddle,Morgan; Simpson,Taylor; Simkus,Bella; Hart,Meegan; Clayton,Leah"

Jesse says in the article on the Buffs website that Parker Sterling is hurt. I thought someone was missing because during the interview Taylor and Parker did with Meegan Hart yesterday, they said there were 18 players.

Article after today's scrimmage. (With So. Carolina State being one of the lowest RPI teams (they were 312th out of 312 teams competing in NCAA D1 last season, and were 332nd out of 336 in 2019), can't take much of anything from the score today. Xavier played them earlier today (in an official match) and also had a very easy time with it, winning 25-8 25-8 25-9.)

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Colorado women's volleyball team rolled to a quick 3-0 win (25-7, 25-9, 25-12) in an exhibition against South Carolina State here Friday afternoon.

The Buffaloes dominated the match from start to finish, hitting .552 as a team while holding the Bulldogs to -.058 as a team. Colorado committed just five errors in the entire match and put down six and a half team blocks with Meegan Hart playing a part in five of them.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jesse Mahoney
"This match was a good opportunity for us to work on a few different lineups and get some of our younger players on the floor. With Sterling Parker out we looked at a few different players in the opposite position including Jill and Kelley who both put up great numbers offensively. We split setting duties tonight between Jenna and Taylor Simpson - Jenna was great as always and Taylor ran the offense well in her opportunities. Looking forward to playing two very good teams tomorrow."
"

(In addition to Ms. Parker being out (hopefully a minor injury!?!), I would have also expected Alexia Kuehl to play today, but she didn't. (She's one of only three middle blockers on the roster, and did start some last season, so I'd think (???) she would have definitely gotten some playing time if she was in Charlotte and healthy.))

Looks like both matches tomorrow should be pretty equal challenges, at least based on the Charlotte- Xavier match going on right now. (Per Charlotte's twitter, they won the 1st 2 sets by identical and tight 25-23 scores.)

After the first two sets, I lost Live Stats. I'm springing for the live stream tonight.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Colorado volleyball opened the 2021 season with a pair of wins here Saturday in the Charlotte Invitational, taking down Xavier 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22) before sweeping host Charlotte 3-0 (25-19, 25-7, 25-22).

The Buffs (2-0) opened the day against Xavier (1-2) and after a slow start where both teams struggled offensively, Leah Clayton opened up the attacking and paved the way to the 3-1 victory. She doubled back in the second match of the day as CU downed Charlotte (2-1) hitting .337 as a team.
...

Colorado hit .100 in the opening set win against Xavier but fell behind in set two despite hitting .311. The team ramped up the action to take a decisive set three victory while hitting .444 and finished the match with a .265 hitting percentage.

Against the host school Charlotte, Colorado dominated with a huge 25-7 set victory in the second and rallied back on a five-point run to steal the third and sweep the match. CU ended with a .337 hitting percentage while holding the Niners to a .129 team hitting percentage.

Clayton was named the Charlotte Invitational Most Valuable Player while Ewert and Hart joined her on the All-Tournament team.

The Buffs return to action next weekend in the annual Pac-12/BIG TEN Challenge where they will face Illinois (3-0) and Iowa (0-1) in Champaign, Ill., alongside No.4-ranked Washington.

QUOTES (after Xavier match)
Head Coach Jesse Mahoney
Excited to get the season started off with a win over a very solid Xavier team. We certainly got better as the match went on. We had great performances from all three pin attackers but Leah was phenomenal taking big swings all match. Quick turnaround for us - we are back on the floor in two hours against a very physical Charlotte team.

QUOTES (After Charlotte match)
Head Coach Jesse Mahoney
A really good start to our season with two wins against very good opponents. I liked that we continued to get better as the tournament went on - and our team battled well for playing back to back on a short turnaround. Leah Clayton was dominant all weekend offensively, Meegan Hart was making great decisions on the block and I thought Jenna moved the ball around really well today getting everyone involved. On to Illinois next week!

ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM
Leah Clayton, Colo. (MVP)
Jenna Ewert, Colo.
Meegan Hart, Colo.
Sydney Rowan, Charlotte
Nalani Lyde, Charlotte
Stevie Wolf, Xavier
Kendal Rivera, SCSU
