Buffs to Battle Knights on the Road

Colorado will play a rescheduled match with UCF on Sunday

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team (8-8, 1-3 Big 12) goes back on the road this weekend for a stand-alone match against UCF (8-5, 1-3 Big 12) on Sunday.

The Buffs hosted eighth-ranked Kansas for the Big 12 home opener and took Texas Tech to five sets for CU's first Big 12 win of the season. The Black and Gold will go to Orlando, Fla., on Oct. 13 to play the Knights at The Venue. The match was originally scheduled for Oct. 9 but was postponed due to inclement weather induced by Hurricane Milton.

This will be the Buffs fourth meeting with the Knights, and they look for their fourth-straight win over UCF all-time.

It sounds like the team is going to Arizona from Florida. Long week on the road.

The UCF campus was closed for 3 days due to Hurricane Milton

As I mentioned a couple posts ago I'm starting some traveling, so wasn't able to watch today's match.

Now looking at live stats, it looks like it was an EXTRA nice win for the team today, as arguably their most important offensive player Ana Burilović (who is one of the team's best servers and provides valuable back row defense as a 6 rotation player) wasn't able to play today. (hope it's nothing serious!). Just from guessing off live stats, it looks like (although not 100% sure from just guessing off the box score) fellow sophomore Kendell Mellor*** may have taken her place in the front row, while junior Emma Torstenson may (???) have taken the back row rotations (and assume serving) for Ms. Burilović's position.
***My recollection is that Ms. Mellor has played a lot on the right-side when she has played, so I am wondering whether she may have been slotted there and maybe normal right-side Lily Dwinell (who led the team in kill attempts today) might have been moved over to be the 2nd outside (left-side) hitter?

If there's anyone who watched the match who could comment whether that is what happened, I'd love to hear it.

good win. this team has so many 5 set matches. It was a a good win since Anna B was not in. Would be nice together 1 win in Zona. The rough week continues

The commentators on ESPN+ said Ana didn't make the trip due to illness.

UCF was also down a player who is sick.

Yes, too many 5 set matches, but they are learning how to win in 5 sets.

(@Bmixer - the below includes an answer to your question in your last post about the record for most 5 set matches - they're still three 5 setters away from tying the record, set way back in 2005, of eleven 5 setters.)

Colorado will meet two former Pac-12 foes on the road in Arizona

By: Malala Pyle, Assistant Director of Athletic Communication

BOULDER –
The Colorado volleyball team (9-8, 2-3 Big 12), on its second leg of back-to-back road trips, will play two former Pac-12 foes this week in Arizona (12-4, 1-4 Big 12) and No. 13 Arizona State (16-2, 5-1 Big 12).

The Buffs will play the Wildcats at McKale Center in Tucson, Ariz., on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. MT and hop over to Tempe, Ariz., to battle the ranked Sun Devils at Mullett Arena on Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. MT. This is the first of two meetings in the regular season with both Big 12 opponents.

Colorado went on the road last weekend to play a rescheduled match with UCF on Oct. 13. Originally scheduled for Oct. 9, the Buffs took the Knights to five sets and managed to come away with the victory. CU was led by So. OH Sydney Jordan, who matched her career high in both kills (18) and digs (15) to earn her fifth double-double of the season.

LONG HAUL: Last weekend against UCF (Oct. 13), Colorado played its eighth five-set match of the season, matching the number of five-set matches played in the 2010 and 2015 seasons. The Buffs are 5-3 overall in five-set matches this season and played five five-set matches within the first 10 matches of the season -- the most five-setters in the first 10 matches in CU Volleyball history. CU's record for total five-set matches in a season was achieved in 2005 with 11 five-setters.

IT'S GIVING ACE: The Buffs have out-killed opponents in six matches this season, all of those falling under the nine matches the Buffs have won. On the service line, not only has Colorado out-aced the opponent in eight wins, but it has also registered more aces than 12 opponents overall.

EASY DIGS IT: Bolles, Jordan, Burilovic, Morton and Simpson have all recorded multiple matches this season with double-digit digs. Morton leads the herd with 11 double figure digs matches, followed by Bolles and Jordan with six each, Burilovic with four and Simpson with two (both being Assists-Digs double-doubles).

CLAWIN' WILDCATS: The Buffs have won 11 of 25 meetings with the Wildcats, the most recent being a 3-0 sweep at home in CU Events Center last season (Oct. 20, 2023). The last time Colorado defeated Arizona on the road was Nov. 23, 2022, in four sets.

SUN DEVILS SLATED: CU has won 13 of 25 meetings with Arizona State, most recent also being a sweep at home in CUEC last season (Oct. 22, 2023). The last time the Buffs overcame the Sun Devils on the road was Oct. 21, 2018, in four sets.

Article after last night's W (and congrats to Ms. Morton on her milestone!) -

"
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Colorado volleyball team (10-8, 3-3 Big 12) defeated the Arizona Wildcats in five sets (15-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-27, 18-16) at McKale Center on Wednesday night.

In its first win against Arizona on the road since Nov. 23, 2022, Colorado took a tough first set loss before coming back and winning sets two and three. The last two sets were tight, with Arizona just barely coming away with the fourth, 28-26. The Buffs were down in the fifth to start but fought off a Wildcat match-point and finally took it, 18-16.

This is the Buffs ninth five-setter of the season and sixth five-set win. Fifty percent of the Buffs' matched this season have been five set matches.

"[Going to five sets] shows that we can be really competitive," head coach Jesse Mahoney said after the match. "We're a team that's good and on the edge of being really good at times. We have to find a way to play at a more even pace, we're a little all over the place sometimes. I'm glad that we can compete and certainly glad that we can win in five, but there's a way for us to play at that level more often and we have to grow into that."

CU had zero errors in the fifth set (hitting .429) and extended its win streak to three. The Buffs also out-aced (8-7) and out-hit (.252-.228) Arizona, the 13th and eighth time doing so against opponents this season, respectively. The Wildcats were averaging 47% in system on the season, but the Buffs held them to 28% on the night.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • Jr. DS/L Sarah Morton picked up her 1,000th career dig with her 13th dig of the night and reached 21 total, her fifth match with 20 or more digs. Morton recorded 773 digs at Auburn and has now reached 235 at CU.
  • Mahoney on Morton's contributions: "She had some really momentum changing digs for us. She's come in and done a nice job of figuring out how we do things here, what our system is. She has a really talented platform and is a really competitive kid. It's been fun to see her get more comfortable with what she's doing, and then play better and with a little bit more freedom. We're excited she's on our team."
  • So. OPP Lily Dwinell reached a career high 20 kills (4e, 45att, hitting .356), two digs and two blocks. This is Dwinell's eighth match this season with double-digit kills and ninth with points (21.0).
  • Mahoney on Dwinell's contributions: "She was really good in sets two through five. Taking the ball high, making good choices, some off-speed stuff. I thought it was a really great match for her."
  • So. OH Sydney Jordan had her sixth double-double of both career and season with 16 kills (2e, 35att, hitting .400) and 16 digs (digging 67%). This is her 12th match with double-digit kills, seventh for double-digit digs and double-digit 13th for points. She also had three aces and two blocks.
  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson had her third double-double of the season, seventh of her career, with 52 assists and 13 digs (digging 64%). This is her third match this season with double figure digs.
  • So. OH Ana Burilovic also had 16 kills, her 15th match with double-digit kills and points (20.0). She also had three blocks (one solo) and two aces.
  • So. MB Cayla Payne had eight kills for the Buffs and three blocks. Both So. DS/L Avery Bolles and Fr. DS/L Katie Salonga had an ace each.
  • For the Wildcats, Carlie Cisneros had 19 kills and Avery Scoggins had 19 digs.

Box score - https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-volleyball/stats/2024/arizona/boxscore/17095

I watched every single point. The only set the team didn't play well in was the first set. The commentators said CU is known for not finishing matches.

After that was said, I wanted us to go to 5 sets and beat Arizona.

5th set was fun to watch. Buffs held on and won.

9 5 set matches. How many more will they play? I hope they can keep winning the matches.
