  • Upon their return to the Big 12, the Buffs were picked to finish 10th in the Big 12 Preseason Poll.
  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson returns as the only consistent starter from the 2023 season after she led the Buffs in assists (9.54 aps) and totaled 1,068. She was named to the Big 12 Preseason Team on Aug. 7.
  • So. OH Lily Dwinell saw action in all 31 matches last season for the Buffs and started eight matches. She totaled 188 kills (1.65 kps) and 83.0 blocks in her time on the court, and she was selected to the 2023 Pac-12 All-Freshman Team.
  • So. OH Sydney Jordan played in 17 matches (started three) and totaled 26 kills. As a high schooler, Jordan was a MaxPreps, Prep Volleyball and AVCA All-American, as well as the second-ranked player in Texas.
  • So. MB Cayla Payne played in 27 matches (started 17) and totaled 106 kills (1.36 kps), 71 blocks (0.91 bps) and 13 digs. Payne had at least one block in all but four contests she saw action in and at least one kill in all but two matches.

  • CU opens its 2024 season against North Texas, Miami and Rutgers this weekend in the North Texas Invitational at The Super Pit in Denton, Texas. All three teams will also face each other over the course of the weekend.

ROAM WITH THE BUFFS: The first two road matches against North Texas and Miami will be broadcasted by North Texas on ESPN+. Fans also can follow Colorado matches through live stats with links available at CUBuffs.com.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME: In a nine-match span from Sept. 6 - Sept. 20, Colorado will play eight out of those nine matches times at home in CU Events Center. In all, Colorado will play 17 of its 30 regular season matches at Events Center and host both Buffs Classic (Georgia, Fresno State, Washington) Sept. 6 - 8 and Buffs Invitational (UC Irvine, California, Wyoming) Sept. 13 - 15 to open the fall. Between those two tournaments, the Buffs will host Northern Colorado on Sept. 11, and the annual home-and-home with nonconference rival Colorado State follows Buffs Invitational on Sept. 19 and 20.

THE BUFFS RETURN: For the first time since the 2010 season, Colorado will play volleyball in the Big 12 Conference. The Buffs are 146-154 (.487) in Big 12 conference play and had an 88-32 (.733) record in the Big Eight. Colorado's two conference championships came in the Big Eight in 1992 and again in 1993 when the Buffs defeated eighth-ranked Nebraska in a five-set thriller.

It's 2-2 early in the 1st set.

Per live stats, the 1st CU starting lineup for the season is
"Colorado starters: Stepaniuk,Emilea; Simkus,Bella; Jordan,Sydney; Burilovi,Ana; Simpson,Taylor; Dwinell,Lily; Morton,Sarah; Payne,Cayla"

Nice comeback in the 1st set of the season, as CU overcomes a 13-19 deficit and gets it 28-26.

It's 6-5 Buffs in the 2nd.

N. Texas tied it up 1-1 after taking the 2nd set 25-20.

It's tight so far in the 3td, with CU up 17-15.

The 3rd set stayed tight the whole way, but CU pulls it out, again in extra points (27-25), to go up 2 sets to 1.

fun match to watch. UNT has some players. I thought the buffs played all right. No middle attack at all and a a dodgy block. They will need to work on that if they are going to have success this year. I liked Anna B and Sydney J. Need to get some more options going but all in all it was a good match and win for this team

I did hate the production on how they kept playing replays and missing live plays. Still a fun watch.

Ana and Sydney were definitely joined by Taylor Simpson with so man assists.

They have the makings of a decent team. Let's see if they can do it..

Good first outing, especially for the players that srrived from Europe last week.

I remembered why I dislike ESPN + so much. They use the announcers from the home school. These two guys sucked

Match day #2, with the opening serve around 5 hours away.
(Note that, with Miami (of FL) receiving votes in the preseason NCAA poll, assume this could / should be the most challenging match of the weekend.)

BOULDER – The Colorado volleyball team (1-0) defeated North Texas in five sets (28-26, 20-25, 27-25, 21-25, 15-11) at The Super Pit on Friday, Aug. 30. The Buffaloes open the season with a win, improving to 27-12 in season openers.

Senior setter Taylor Simpson achieved two major milestones in the match – 2,000 career assists in the third set, and 100 career blocks in the fourth. Simpson finished the match with 48 assists and four blocks (one solo).

The Buffs and the Mean Green went back and forth through the entire match, with Colorado earning sets one and three in deuce sets and UNT winning sets two and four. CU ultimately came out on top, 15-11, in the fifth set, shutting the Eagles down with a 3-0 scoring run.

"I'm very happy to get the win," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "North Texas is a really good team, they're well-coached, and I think they're always going to be tough in their home gym. A little bit of an uneven match for us – lots of highs and lots of lows. We need to even ourselves out and figure out some things on the defensive side."

As a team, Colorado out-killed, out-dug and out-aced their opponent, totaling 63, 66 and nine in those categories respectively. Three Buffs – junior libero Sarah Morton, sophomore defensive specialist Avery Bolles and freshman defensive specialist Katie Salonga – had two aces each. Colorado also had three athletes with double-digit kills, three athletes with double-digit digs and dug 59% of the balls hit at them on the court.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson reached 2,000 career assists and 100 career blocks in the match against UNT. Totaling 48 assists and four blocks (one solo), Simpson also notched five digs, four kills and a service ace.
  • Mahoney on Simpson: "Super proud of Taylor. That's a lot of assists and a lot of blocks. She can be underrated as a blocker, but she's a really nice blocker, so it's nice to see her get rewarded there. She set a really nice match tonight, made a lot of good decisions. Excited for a lot more assists this season."
  • So. OH Ana Burilovic led the team in kills with 20 (7e, 50att) and notched a double-double for the Buffaloes with 12 digs (55% digging percentage). Burilovic also had an ace in the match.
  • So. OH Sydney Jordan also achieved a double-double with 16 kills (6e, 47att) and 12 digs (63% digging percentage). She also had an ace and two blocks (one solo). Jordan coupled with Burilovic to account for nearly half of the Buffs earned points (40/82).
  • Jr. DS/L Sarah Morton led both teams in digs with 26 (66% digging percentage), matching her career-high set in the 2022 season against Georgia (Oct. 9) during her freshman year at Auburn. Morton also recorded two aces and three assists.
  • So. MB Cayla Payne had 12 kills for the Buffs and led the team in blocks with five (one solo). Payne notched three digs as well.
  • For the Eagles, Aryn Johnson led the team with 18 kills and reached a double-double with 12 digs. Alexa Washington had eight blocks (two solo). Madison Scrivner has 18 digs.
...

UP NEXT:
  • The Buffaloes continue competing in the North Texas Invitational on Saturday afternoon against Miami (1-0). First serve is set for 3 p.m. CT/2 p.m. MT and the match will be shown on ESPN+.
  • Mahoney on Miami: "We don't have a lot of time, but we have to prepare for Miami who's very good. They have three really heavy topspin jump servers that we have to replicate in our serve-pass tomorrow. They're very fast at the pins and they have a very potent backrow attack."

MATCH NOTES:
  • Colorado improved to 2-0 all-time against North Texas and won their second straight of the Eagles.
  • The Buffaloes get their first 3-2 victory of the season and are 1-0 in five-set matches.
  • Colorado had more kills (63-62), digs (66-65) and service aces (9-6) than its opponent.

Under ninth-year head coach Jesse Mahoney, Colorado earned a winning record in the 2023 season (16-15) and went 8-12 against Pac-12 opponents. A significant win for the Buffs took place against 17th-ranked Arizona State last year. The Buffs took down the Sun Devils in three sets, completing the sweep and earning CU's only win against a ranked opponent in the 2023 season. Colorado also swept Arizona (Oct. 20) and Washington (Nov. 19) and finished seventh in the Pac-12.

And, congrats to setter Taylor Simpson for hitting a couple milestones, one each on the offensive and defensive side -

Note - one nice thing about the move to the Big 12 is it looks like ESPN+ keeps match replays available on demand (for of course those with an ESPN+ subscription), with yesterday's game available at
https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/f9c36645-492f-4fe3-918a-765b1fb63449 . (Although on the negative side, I had big problems trying to watch the match on my Windows laptop last night, with the stream not loading and/ or giving error messages periodically. It did work fine on my Android phone, however.)

The Buffs kept it close in the 1st set, but Miami gets it 22-25. (While I've been half watching, seems like Miami would get on mini service runs to go up 3-5 points, then the Buffs would respond to get within 1 or 2, but could never quite seize the lead at any point.)

The 2nd set started tight (the Buffs were only down 1 at 9-10), but Miami went on 2 HUGE service runs and easily go up 0-2 by an 11-25 score.

Another tough set for the young Buffs. Miami completes the sweep with a 2nd 11-25 score.

It's a benchmark for where we are against a tourney team with a young squad. Lots to improve. I think a winning record is kind of the goal for the season right now.

Will be fun to see where they are when big 12 play starts? All I ask- have a fun season as a young rebuilding team…. And….Just please beat CSU?

"
BOULDER – The Colorado volleyball team (2-1) swept the Rutgers Scarlet Knights (25-12, 25-17, 25-16) in a neutral match in the North Texas Invitational at The Super Pit in Denton, Texas, on Sunday, Sept. 1.

After a difficult loss to the Miami Hurricanes yesterday, the Buffaloes bounced back in heroic fashion and flipped the script on the Scarlet Knights. In an hour and 14 minutes, Colorado sealed the deal in three sets, not letting Rutgers breach 20 points in any set.

"I'm really proud of our team for bouncing back from a tough loss against Miami," head coach Jesse Mahoney said. "Rutgers played Miami tough and swept North Texas, so I appreciated the mentality that we came into today's match with. Our biggest change was from the serving and defensive standpoint – Sarah Morton in particular, Avery, Ana and Katie. Taylor was fantastic, as she always is, at distributing the ball, especially when went weren't in system."

Sophomore outside hitter Ana Burilovic and sophomore middle blocker Cayla Payne were named to the North Texas Invitational All-Tournament team. Colorado out-killed (31-29), out-aced (8-5), out-dug (27-22) and out-blocked (15-4) Rutgers in the match. The Buffs hit .375 overall, holding the Knights to .071, and led the whole way in sets one and three.

KEY PLAYERS:
  • So. OH Ana Burilovic led both teams with 13 kills (2e, 24att, hitting .458) and had five digs – digging 71% of the balls hit at her – and a block. This is her second game this weekend with double-digit kills and third game leading scoring for the Buffs.
  • So. MB Cayla Payne totaled nine blocks (three solo) for Colorado, and she had four kills (1e, 9att, hitting .333) and one dig.
  • Mahoney on Burilovic and Payne: "I thought Ana was out best pin attacker this weekend, especially today, she did a really nice job. Cayla, when we can pass and deliver her the ball, is one of our most physical players. We just have to ball handle a little better to make sure we get it to her."
  • Sr. S Taylor Simpson recorded 23 assists and the team reached a 50% kill percentage when Simpson set the ball.
  • So. OH Lily Dwinell ended the match with five blocks, three kills (1e, 6att, hitting .333) and a dig. She also hit .667 on first ball attacks.
  • So. OH Sydney Jordan had five kills for the Buffs (2e, 13att) and led the team in digs with eight. Jordan had the Knights out of system 80% of the time on her serve.
  • Jr. DS/L Sarah Morton totaled five aces, including three during the third set, contributing to a big Buffalo run. She also had a 19% ace percentage (28 total serves) and kept the opponent out of system 52% of the time on her serve.
  • Jr. MB Bella Simkus reached three kills with no errors, hitting .600 on the night.
  • So. DS/L Avery Bolles recorded two aces, five digs and a kill. On her serve, Bolles had the opponent out of system 60% of the time.
  • For the Knights, Avery Jesewitz led scoring with eight kills and Ally Borellis had five digs.
...

UP NEXT:
  • The Buffaloes will return home host Buffs Classic on Friday, Saturday and Sunday against Georgia, Fresno State and Washington, respectively. First serve against Georgia is set for 7 p.m. MT at CU Events Center on Sept. 6. All tournament matches will be broadcast on ESPN+. Links to watch are available at CUBuffs.com.
  • Mahoney on playing in Buffs Classic: "Georgia and Washington are both big and physical, they can match us in physicality for sure. They're well coached and starting off their seasons well. Fresno State is returning quite a few pieces from their tournament team from last year, so it'll be a good challenge."

MATCH NOTES:
  • Colorado improves to 2-0 all-time against Rutgers. This is the Buffs first sweep of the Scarlet Knights.
  • The Buffs end the weekend, 2-1, and move on to their home season opener next weekend.
  • CU gets it's second win, moving to 1-0 in three-set matches on the season

Under ninth-year head coach Jesse Mahoney, Colorado earned a winning record in the 2023 season (16-15) and went 8-12 against Pac-12 opponents. A significant win for the Buffs took place against 17th-ranked Arizona State last year. The Buffs took down the Sun Devils in three sets, completing the sweep and earning CU's only win against a ranked opponent in the 2023 season. Colorado also swept Arizona (Oct. 20) and Washington (Nov. 19) and finished seventh in the Pac-12.

Yesterday's match wasn't streamed. I turned on Live Stats in Set 3. Buffs were up 10-0. How did the score end up 25-16? I'm hoping it's because Jesse put the bench in the game.

I streamed on my tv and once I got ESPN+ set up, the stream was fine. There were all kinds of volleyball matches happening at the same time.

That's just trading points 15-16 to close it out. 🤷

nice bounce back after a horrid game against the U. Need to find some consistency but not a good tourney imo
