The Buffs will reach the half way point of conference play after this weekend's tough home matches against the 2 ranked L.A. schools. Go get some W's Buffs!

Obviously, getting wins against EITHER OR BOTH ranked teams will be equally GREAT for this season, but for historical purposes, would be a little extra special to get a win over USC, who the Buffs have NEVER beaten in vball. (Currently, the Buff program is 0-14 lifetime against the Trojans (per page #65 of the info guide at http://static.cubuffs.com/custompages/volleyball/2017_Info_Guide/60-66_series_standings.pdf), and the Trojans remain the only Pac team the Buffs haven't beaten at least once since starting play in the conference back in 2011.)

Buffs cruise in the 2nd 25-14 to go up 2 sets to 0!
(Obviously, injuries happen to every team- but wanted to mention the Trojans are missing their top offensive player, Khalia Lanier. Per someone in Volleytalk, the announcers (before I started watching) evidently said she suffered a concussion during practice yesterday.)

BOULDER — For the first time in school history, the Colorado Buffaloes defeated Southern California on the volleyball court, upsetting the No. 19 Trojans 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-21) on Friday night at the Coors Events Center.

The Buffs, who are riding a three-match win streak, improved to 15-5 overall and are now 5-4 in Pac-12 play. USC is now 14-6 (6-3 Pac-12).

WHAT HAPPENED: The Buffs came out on fire and were ready to face the challenge that was USC. Frankie Shebby led the CU attack with 12 kills and three other players had eight kills each for CU: Alexa Smith, Naghede Abu and Joslyn Hayes. Hayes hit a match-high .538 with just one error on 13 attacks, while Abu hit .500 with two errors on 12 swings.

At the net, CU had six players record at least two blocks. Anna Pfefferle led the charge, posting six blocks, while Shebby and Abu each put up five. Smith and Hayes each had three, while Brynna DeLuzio added a pair.
...

NOTES: This is the first win for the Buffs over USC…The Trojans lead the all-time series 14-1…USC was the only team the Buffs had not defeated since joining the Pac-12…CU is 7-1 at Coors this season and is 3-4 against ranked opponents…CU is also 4-0 this season when winning the first two sets...This is the second sweep for the Buffs in conference play in 2017…USC has been swept three times this entire season…The Buffs have now surpassed their win total from last season (14) and are one conference win from last season's total (6).

TEAM STATISTICS: The Buffs hit .261 with 43 kills and 19 errors on 92 attacks, while USC was held to a .067 hitting efficiency with 29 kills and 23 errors on 90 attacks. NEXT UP: The Buffs host No. 13 UCLA on Saturday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m. at Coors Events Center.

QUOTES:
Head coach Jesse Mahoney
General
"That was one of the more complete matches we've played all season. Obviously USC is a very good opponent. They have a major player out, so they did some things differently, but we managed our side-out game as well as we have all season. We were very efficient from the middle and from the right. We followed our game plan really well. Our two middle blockers, Naghede [Abu] and Anna [Pfefferle] did a fantastic job reading and closing."

On Beating USC For The First Time
"I referenced it and had Joslyn [Hayes] talk about it a bit. Everyone we play is really good. There's not a lot of 'hey we're going to get extra motivated for this match.' We're up for every match. Every team we play is good. It's nice to check this one off because we've beaten every other team in the Pac-12 since we've been in it, so now hopefully we can continue to do that as we move forward."

On Winning In Three Tonight Before Playing Another Match Tomorrow Evening
"Any time we can take jumps and swings away from our players, it's a good thing because the season is a grind physically and mentally. We play UCLA and hopefully they went to five sets at Utah and have to get on a plane and come here while we sleep in and rest and relax. Winning in three is great for tomorrow."

Aztecbuff) UCLA note- The Buff coaches will I'm sure be checking the UCLA film against Utah last night even more intently than normal as the #12 Bruins, who I'm sure will be hungry after losing to the Utes 1-3, may (???) be missing one of their main normal players (like the Trojans last night), as 6'3" Bruin freshman outside hitter Mac May (great name, #10 ranked player in her recruiting class and the Bruins #2 in kills per set so far this season) evidently didn't make the mountain trip (per the Volleytalk forum).

Mack May grew up where I live. She lives and breathes volleyball and has for years and years. She has spent time being coached by Nebraska great Kayla Banworth, who went to the same high school as May.

May has already won weekly awards in the Pac. Now I think we just might beat UCLA.

With Ms. May being able to contribute as she has as a freshman, especially for a top team like UCLA, I'd assume her vball future is very bright. Hopefully, whatever evidently* has kept her in L.A. is minor.
(*Of course, now watch me (by mentioning the Volleytalk forum talk) end up looking like an idiot when she shows up starting tonight for the Bruins. Although, the Volleytalk info is at least somewhat supported by the fact she doesn't show up in the box score for last night's UCLA- Utah match (https://www.utahutes.com/documents/2017/10/20/Utah_3_UCLA_1_10_20_17.pdf).)

As to tonight's match, assume a "betting line" would still have the Buffs an an underdog, even with May not playing, with UCLA being one of "those" (top) schools that seem to always be able to recruit enough top players to have good depth in every position. Hopefully, however, the Buffs can still pull the upset! (On the positive side, the Buffs have won 3 out of the last 7 vs. the Bruins.)

May's volleyball future is very bright and I do hope any injury she may have is minor and she heals quickly. Don't like to see any athlete injured in any sport, on my team or on the opponent's team.

Protect the home court tonight!

The match against the Bruins about to begin. Looks like the normal Buff starting lineup.

After a strong start, the 1st set has fallen apart some, and the Buffs are down 13-20. The (usual) ridiculously good UCLA back row defense on display so far.
