MBB Open Scrimmage

Was great to see the hoops team in action today. A few thoughts:

- The scrimmage performance today was light years ahead of the open scrimmage 2 years ago.
- Wes Sat out, looked like an ankle from him elevating his leg on the bench, but didn't appear serious.
- Excited about the newcomers, especially Bryce Peters and Namon Wright (who will have to sit out this yr but fills a big need for next yr). I don't know how many minutes Peters will get this year, but he plays confident and makes an impact on both ends of the floor. Love his mid-range game.
- We have tons of depth on the perimeter, but not much in the post. Tory seemed to be a tough matchup for Siewert and Walton, but I think they both have potential. Walton has a surprisingly good shot from 3.
- XJ looks healthy which is great to see.
- I really like how our coaches teach in drills. Very detailed on D and great explanations for the players when they make a mistake.

Looking forward to the real games, go Buffs!!

Very athletic team: NO stiffs, especially the frosh. They can all play. They can all shoot.
In practice, they might face a team that's better than many teams, even some Pac opponents, I think it's the first time you could say that.
Walton was a surprise. He has some meat on him and can move well, even with a knee brace. Siewart looked good and should see time as a back up in the middle.
Note to opponents: DO NOT leave George King in the corner alone; as close to an automatic "3" as there is.

My biggest take away was how up tempo they were playing this time of year. Previous years you could tell they were a step slow due to thinking too much, curious how this works out in Feb/March.

Other than that, I was impressed by the scoring options, although the defense left a lot to be desired, looked mostly effort based, which I cannot get too upset about as its hard to get pumped for a inter-squad scrimmage. I expect the defensive intensity to be there by the season opener. But still with the scoring options, I think we will see them blow a few teams completely out of the gym, and put up a ton of points in a hurry.

Very excited for the season so far, but need to see how things come together in the OOC play.

Isn't the Pac 12 media day being held this week? Who's representing CU? I assume Wes, for one.

No mention of White from the scrimmage. Is there a reason?
White's pretty much a known commodity. He fits in so well you don't notice him, a solid, unflashy cog in Tad's machine of "stretch" players.
One thing I do recall was that he drew a lot of fouls. If he can hit 80+% of his FTs, he'll be in double digits regularly.
The newcomers are intriguing for the reason they are "new".
AS noted above, the entire team, even walk-ons, is comprised of athletic basketball players. A real first.

How good is Derrick White?

Very. In the starting lineup preview, I made a crucial error of predicting Josh Fortune to start over White, and how that haunts me. White is a truly gifted scorer and can fill it up from anywhere on the court. On Saturday against a very good defense (CU’s defense is always good), White got past any and all defenders en route to buckets aplenty. On drives to the basket, White bends space and time to find open shots, and once he’s there, he scores effortlessly. His finishing ability is special; he’s able to convert because of unparalleled creativity and body control. If he doesn’t lead the team in scoring, it would be one of the biggest surprises on the season.
