Mike Bobo agrees to become Colorado State's football coach

We won't know how good or bad this is until a year or two from now but at least CSU can't be accused of going small time.

on paper not a bad hire but I highly doubt he stays very long..

coach well and he goes back to the south when the first chance opens up .. not just SEC but ACC too ..
he's good ol boy .. a fish out of water

will be much harder to recruit to csu (MWC) than UGA (SEC)

I think it is a pretty poor hire, honestly. UGA fans were pretty divided on him, and many are happy to see him go. Guy has no experience outside Florida and Georgia.

I'm skeptical that the Rams can luck out again, but whatever.

All hires are a crapshoot. Bobo doesn't impress me, but neither did Sparkles and he turned out great. Of course when you look closer, Sparkles had a very impressive resume with multiple coaching stops under very respected coaches and won a lot of hardware at Alabama. Bobo has none of that. Should be fun. Doubt he becomes the 2nd coach in CSU history to beat Colorado in his first try.

I think CSU went to the well one too many times. The "Hiring a coordinator from an SEC school" trick might work again for them, but there is a lot less meat on this hire than the Sparkles hire. I was kind of worried they'd end up with Frost, which of course means that Bobo will be fantastic and Frost will be a complete washout.

Any idea what kind of staff he'll put together?

good luck to him.

heard a funny story from dykes at cal out here: he said the staff had huge communications issues with the players the first season because the players couldn't understand all their deep southern accents. he said it took a year to get to a point where everyone knew what everyone else was saying, especially at crunch time.

wondering if this will be a similar issue in sheep land...

Any CSU hire is out of there if he does well. It's a stepping stone job without a P5 affiliation.

But this hire to me is a lazy hire. They went back to the formula that worked before without probably having a lot of insight as to why that worked. McIlwhiner had a Western US pedigree with a Alabama Cherry on top. This guy may be a great coach, but he's never coached outside the Southeast. Which means he will have no High School buddies feeding him G2 on the hidden gems in their league, or potential character flaws etc. He also won't have ties to Assistant Coaches out west that have those ties and it's harder to put together a staff in general of guys if you are networked in the SE and many of those guys won't look favorably upon moving to Colorado from Georgia or Florida.

I suspect he will stick with what he knows and there's undoubtedly ridiculous talent available there that just fell short of a UGA offer. He will have no restrictions academically to bringing in rental players. So that formula may continue to work for them.

They think they have a formula, and they stuck to it. We will see how it goes, but there is a big damn difference between somebody who learned at the feet of a few very good to great coaches including Saban, and somebody who pretty much only worked for a guy whose biggest accomplishment is sticking around.
