More 4-3 fronts on defense in 2020

Big Jim

WTF?
Given the players on the team, it makes sense that CU will play more 4-3 fronts this season.

DE - Lang
NT/ DT - Sami
DT - Johnson
DE - Alfano

This gets Alfano on the field with his superior size+speed and Johnson can be just as disruptive on passing downs from the DT spot as from the 3-4 End spot. Lang and Johnson are good ends, Lang is an NFL prospect, but coaches don’t recruit the #1 player in the country to sit and learn.

OLB - ?
MLB - Landman
OLB - ?

This also reduces the number of LBs on the field of which CU has exactly one LB that is a proven quality P5 player to date. I expect Harris to get some spot action on passing downs. Other than Landman the playing time is there for the taking for any guys that step up and take it at OLB. By the mid season point we could see two true freshmen starting alongside Landman.

By the end of last season Wells was arguably more disruptive than Landman. Wells is an NFL gut and is absolutely a proven P5 backer.

Akil Jones is potentially a good fit at the traditional SAM spot, but no one really fits the WILL spot. Should still see plenty of 3-4 alignments.

Jash Allen should play a ton at WILL this year. He started to come on last season and even showed his athleticism by playing some STAR. One of the guys I've got my eye on as a potential breakout performer in 2020.

Tucker doesn't seem to prefer a traditional 4-3. It seems when they go 4 man front then it is a 4-2-5, or something of that sort. That third linebacker seems to be the star position. Either way, its pretty crazy how quickly they changed over the d-line. Very well could go into 2020 with that position being the strongest on the team.

I'm not as familiar with the 4-3 linebackers optimal size but would Marvin Ham be a guy that could potentially fill that spot if he comes on well? I remember being pretty excited about his potential.

Would be exciting to see Jash Allen step up this year and I wonder if Wells begins rotating on the line in base 4 sets.

Eric Kendricks was drafted in 2nd round out of UCLA my Minnesota about 5 years ago and is one of the best 3-down MLB’s in the NFL. He lists at 6-0 232.

Just put Johnson on a four man front and see how much pressure the DL can put on the opposing QBs.

I guess you could also say that a DE could be considered an OLB, but Guy Thomas is the prototype OLB, not a DE. Also, Berry is a rotational guy probably at some point, but he’s not starting over Sami
