What had to be done is now done. The program is going to have a new coaching staff.
The question now is who will be playing for that new staff. The current roster is very young and includes a lot of young players who still have a RS year due to being forced into action, in some if not many cases before they were ready to play.
Despite the losing Embree was popular with a large number of players, especially those he recruited to the program. Naturally a lot of these players are going to think what's next and consider transfering. We also have the question of the players currently on the commit list who committed with the idea of playing for Embree and members of his staff.
We are bound to lose some of these guys but in the end I think the number will be smaller than we think at first glance. Players want to do two things. They want to play where they are comfortable and feel wanted and they want to win. It will be incumbent on the new coach to "re-recruit" a number of the players who are considering leaving. With their connections to current teammates, having aclimated to Boulder and CU, and having a coach with something to sell regarding winning (otherwise he wouldn't get the job) I think a lot of these guys will stay. The current recruits may be a little harder since they haven't become "part of CU" yet.
The other thing we have in our favor, if you can consider it as such, is that lots of the players we are talking about don't have a lot of other options at major conference schools. People aren't going to be lining up to take guys who weren't stars on a 1-10 team. Same with a lot of the recruits. These aren't 5* guys with full mailboxes every day from top 25 teams.
It will also be interesting to see if the new coach ends up "bringing some guys with him" in terms of players he has had recruiting contact with and/or guys at other schools who see this as an opportunity for a better place to be.
Lots of speculation that will depend a great deal on who they actually hire but it will impact how fast the program can start to recover. It is important though that we get a new guy in place soon enough to at least work with some of the guys we have and rescue some semblance of a recruiting class.
