Moving forward, player attrition

What had to be done is now done. The program is going to have a new coaching staff.

The question now is who will be playing for that new staff. The current roster is very young and includes a lot of young players who still have a RS year due to being forced into action, in some if not many cases before they were ready to play.

Despite the losing Embree was popular with a large number of players, especially those he recruited to the program. Naturally a lot of these players are going to think what's next and consider transfering. We also have the question of the players currently on the commit list who committed with the idea of playing for Embree and members of his staff.

We are bound to lose some of these guys but in the end I think the number will be smaller than we think at first glance. Players want to do two things. They want to play where they are comfortable and feel wanted and they want to win. It will be incumbent on the new coach to "re-recruit" a number of the players who are considering leaving. With their connections to current teammates, having aclimated to Boulder and CU, and having a coach with something to sell regarding winning (otherwise he wouldn't get the job) I think a lot of these guys will stay. The current recruits may be a little harder since they haven't become "part of CU" yet.

The other thing we have in our favor, if you can consider it as such, is that lots of the players we are talking about don't have a lot of other options at major conference schools. People aren't going to be lining up to take guys who weren't stars on a 1-10 team. Same with a lot of the recruits. These aren't 5* guys with full mailboxes every day from top 25 teams.

It will also be interesting to see if the new coach ends up "bringing some guys with him" in terms of players he has had recruiting contact with and/or guys at other schools who see this as an opportunity for a better place to be.

Lots of speculation that will depend a great deal on who they actually hire but it will impact how fast the program can start to recover. It is important though that we get a new guy in place soon enough to at least work with some of the guys we have and rescue some semblance of a recruiting class.

I think they will cool off a bit, and see who the new hire is. I believe that Embree is telling them to stay the course at CU. He said on the radio that he is now and always a Buff.

The players have a lot of love for Embree. A few exceptions, but that's normal.

Normally I would say that this would cool off, the players would give a new coach a fair chance, and pretty much everyone who was going to stay would still stay.

But I've never seen a departing coach work so hard to turn his players against a university and its administration.

I lost a lot of respect for Jon Embree today.

Along with some former players...

P-Rich was asked if Embree's firing has changed anything & he said no ... he will be a Buff next season.
Saw this on Channel 4 news.

I understand it's a difficult time for them right now, but the grass may not always be greener on the other side.

The chances of the coach of the team they are moving to may not be there in the future either.

Not trying to start stuff here, but I just did not see or hear all of the pressers today. From what I heard, Embree was definitely upset with how he felt like he'd be treated and has not been bashful about telling anybody who will listen, but I hadn't heard about him trying to dissuade the kids from being Buffs going forward. It's pretty low to actively try to drive wedges between folks for his own agenda, but I just want more information about what he's said in this regard.

please god, be true. and if he's dating a girl, please don't break up

This is the opportunity for someone like Dillon is cement his leadership role.

I'll let others go into it if they want. I'll just say that Embree was a long way from being a unifying force calling on these guys to make the struggles worth it by going all out for the new coach and returning CU to glory.

I think I'm going to step back and focus on the positive message about CU showing it takes its football seriously and we are on the right track with our young players, a major upgrade coming to the coaching staff & recruiting efforts, and some major operational & facilities announcements on the horizon.

P-Rich clearly taking a leadership role. I like to see it!

Junior wide receiver Paul Richardson, who sat out this season to complete the rehabilitation of his knee, believes the first task for returning players "is to come together." He said he will organize a group of players he considers to be team leaders "and make sure we're all on the same page as far as working hard to finish the semester in school.
"And whatever group (of coaches) we get next, we'll work with them to help finish turning this program around. We're already on the right path; coach (Embree) laid a nice foundation for us. We're headed in the right direction."

Just re-read my post, and want to clarify that I wasn't suggesting you are trying to drive wedges, just saying I was trying to get clarification on what JE was doing to drive wedges. In any event, you're probably right that it's better to just focus on the future which hopefully will be brighter.

I think you mean Grossnickle :) Ole Gold Shoes used up his eligibility. I think the answer to your question is, technically, yes, but not likely.

**** yeah I meant Grossnickle. What a terrible error, to identify his arch-nemisis. Thanks.

I think we go thru spring practice before we see the defections start. At that time the players will either like or dislike the new coach.

Also at that time the next coach will purge the guys that aren't buying into his vision.

:yeahthat:

I am very confident that the advice the players are receiving is along these lines: wait and see, go through spring, see if the new coaching staff works for you. If it doesn't, well you have to sit a year out anyway, so you don't actually gain anything by going to new program before next summer.

in the end, nobody will leave on their own volition unless they are struggling already with home-sickness, girl issues, grade problems, etc. This just doesn't happen too much.

If the next guy brings in the spread offense, you might see some QB's get out of here.

We can only hope.

The new coach will also be in a position to tell some guys, QB and other positions, that while he will honor their spot on the team they would be better off to look elsewhere since they are not in the plans at CU and offer them help finding a place where they can compete to play.

We have a lot of decent young talent but we also have some young deadwood that looks to be tying up some scholly slots for the next 2-3 years. This would be a good opportunity to clear some of that out.

Attrition in these deals never as bad as people fear. A lot depends on the new staff.

I'd say all of it... along with how soon we get our new staff. We may lose a lot of the recruits, but is that a big deal anyways?

I'm sure that there will be some surprises, as there were when Embree came in (Forrest West, Will Jeff, etc) but I strongly suspect that it will be minimal and have minimal impact in the long run.
