Barnett was advocating for this during the game. Not sure Lewis is big enough to be more than a situational pass rusher outside. I guess he could take the Moeller spot.
Then the coaches need to figure out how to get both of them on the field at the same time. Maybe that's moving Lewis to Buff Backer, or Landman to an outside position, if they are dead set on having Gamboa play 100% of the defensive snaps.
Yep. I'd like to see a Gamboa-Landman rotation in 2018 similar to the Gamboa-Gillam rotation in 2016.
Yep. I think that would open up the opportunity to move Lewis around and have him as the 2nd OLB at times so he can pass rush from multiple looks. Would make a huge difference.
I didn't mind gamboa's limitations nearly as much when he was coming out a lot to get Gillam on the field. Hope that sort of thing comes back.
I was noticing Mulumba a lot. If the light bulb has come on for him, certainly makes you feel better about next year.
I didn't want to get embroiled in whatever was in the game thread by offending someone with a positive comment, but one observation I had from that game is that Mulumba looked like a different guy from early in the season. Seems like he's starting to figure it out with his foundational techniques and responsibilities and is now able to start making some plays. Dude's got great hands.
not the kind of thing you want to be saying about a guy who was your starter all season (thanks Jeffcoat!) , but yea, positive development.
Did we magically recruit a DL?
The guys we recruited last year are starting to come around. Malumba and Tuiloma look to be serviceable, while the lbs and DBs look to be very solid.
Not to de-emphasize how they finish the 2018 recruiting class, though. Because while Javier and Mulumba look better as the season goes along, there's a real problem with depth and we need to be able to rotate 5 or 6 good players on the DL to be able to hold up against the Pac-12 pace and run games.
I think Mulumba has come a long way too. He was a victim of a nasty cut block on RJones TD run though...nasty.
Agreed. But this wasn’t about recruiting. I’ll leave that discussion to others. My point was that the guys we have coming back have progressed as the year went on to the point where I’m comfortable that we won’t totally suck on defense next year. Injuries can, and often do, play a big role.
