New Article Series on Colorado Athletic Facility Improvements

"What I can tell people from interacting with the leadership of the chancellor and Mike Bohn and the cabinet, the regents and the president is we have big aspirations," Hilliard said. "We just have special challenges in meeting them. No one should mistake the challenges for a lack of aspirations or a lack of commitment. The chancellor would not do a presentation in front of the board of regents if he weren't supportive of what Mike Bohn's vision is."

Because Hilliard said it, it must be.true. Chancellor DiStephano puts the success of CU football as his top priority. He was a visionary in the Big 12 and has been the envy of college sports fans from Los Angeles to Palo Alto to Eugene to Salt Lake City to Seattle. CU is on the bleeding edge of college football facilities investments and Phil DiStephano is leading the charge. Wow, CU's seadon ticket holders and fans are proud and impressed by DiStephano's adept leadership.

wow. there will be much gnashing of teeth over the last 2 paragraphs. This is yet another in a series of attempts to lower expectations. I am no longer even hoping for an IPF until I hear otherwise.

DiStefano told the regents in June that he planned to brief them again in January on the results of the feasibility study and the 10-year plan. It's unlikely any project would be approved at that point.

What. A. Letdown. So the big announcement in Sept was to make an announcement that we'll have another meeting in half a year and announce that nothing is expected to happen then either? We're always preparing, just go:

I'm not going to freak out about the safety of the fans. Please don't panic.

It takes a safety arguement to get CU to budge on actually doing something to the stadium.

I'm fearful that CU fans and the football team and ralphie V will fall into the abyss.

Shore up those facilities before they slide down the mountain. Safety first!

Any structural engineer worth his professional credentials will tell you that an indoor practice facility is the best way to shore up the embankment. Its the only way of protecting precious human lives in section 122.

The next sentence was equally if not more discouraging. :sigh:

Unless a donor or group of donors comes forward in the near future with a major gift that would all but assure the project moves forward, it will be sometime next year before any project at Folsom Field is approved.

Disappointing, for sure. However, let's look at this objectively for a second. Would we rather go into massive debt like CSU? Patience, while hard to come by, will be essential, I think.

I hope there's a path to eliminate all existing debt while making this happen.

They should be able to repay the current debt from the increased revenues they're getting. I don't know how much is left, but I dont think it's very much.

Please catch me up on the CUAD debt situation. Post a link to the dept finances if one is readily available.

How much debt remains on the Club Seats to the East, how much is the annual payment on that project, and when does the school expect to pay that off?

Is CU still paying off Gary Barnett's buy-out? If so, how much remains?

What is the timetable and amount remaining on Dan Hawkins's buy out?

(Did CU ever collect on the $0.5M buy-out of Bz when he split for Wake Forrest?)

I recall CU taking out a loan from the school to make up for the penalty of exiting the B12 and for lost network revenue associated with the conference change. Is this part of the debt profile?

What other long term debts are outstanding?

The first step in tackeling the debt "problem" is recognizing the facts around the problem.
 
I drank the koolaid that we might get an IPF and at least facilities that are marginally competitive. I should have known better.
 
After this article and the Jeff Thomas news to start the day, I'm going to spend the rest of it drinking grain alcohol. Catch you all on the flippity flop.

haha - we should have been wary... there was too much good news coming out of Boulder this summer
 
Patience fellas...I don't think CU will be able to delay those projects any longer just like RTD delaying the completition of the NW line until 2042.
 
Well, at least there will be games to watch this fall. I really don't expect much out of the admin. I am pulling for Embo and the team. Dr. Phil, MB and BB, well, the less said about them the better. For the life of me, why would you make statements that give the impression you are going to have big time upgrades and then backpeddle? Not the kind of leadership that makes you want to invest....
