Next CU MBB coach

Who do all of you want as the next basketball coach? IMO

1. Steve McClain - experienced, knows the team, and would probably prevent mass transfers
2. Randy Bennett (St. Mary's) - Made it to sweet 16 this year, good international connections, expressed interest
3. Mike Dunlap - Well-respected, runs same offense, colorado connections

I wouldn't necessarily consider transfers in selecting our next coach. Burks appears to be the only risk worth considering and I think that risk is minimal. He's #6 on NBAdraft.net's 2011 mock draft (http://www.nbadraft.net/2011mock_draft). Barring a terrible 2010-11 campaign, he is gone after next year. No way he sits out a year for a transfer unless he has zero interest in entering the NBA draft as an underclassman.

Good point. I don't think there is much of a threat of Burks, Higgins or Relphorde transferring, but I guess you never know. I still like McClain, but I would REALLY want them to interview St. Mary's Randy Bennett.

All three have their plus's and minus's.
McClain - Liked by the players, would be the best choice for continuing the momentum we have built over the past couple of years. Best chance to not only keep the players we have but also not have to start at square one in recruiting this year. Had some success at Wyoming going to the NCAA tourney multiple times but tailed off in the last few years there. Quality candidate but I am concerned about his teams at Wyo not being consistent. Also his success was tied to a few really good recruits there in a time when the MWC was not a very strong BB league compared to now.

Bennett - Proved he can recruit to a place that is not known for big time BB, his teams play sound fundamental ball at both ends of the court. Question if this is just a flash or if he is really that good a coach. Also as a young up and comer, would CU be a place he would stay if he had real success here or would it be a stepping stone.

Dunlap - Has done everything but be a HC at a D-1 school, won huge at D-2, won big as a lead assistant in D-1, also experience in NBA. Can recruit both US and internationally, runs a solid, clean program. Kids like him and I don't think we would have a lot of turnover. Loves Colorado and I think is looking for a way to settle down here. Hard to figure some things that have happened to him in past few years with the situation at Arizona and Oregon and why he isn't already a D-1 head coach, is there something we don't know about?

I think considering the condition of the athletic department at CU as the past history of the program we would are lucky to have candidates this good. I don't think any of them would do a bad job. I am sceptical about Bennett, is he using us to get his name out there for bigger jobs or to use us as a stepping stone. McClains last couple of years at Wyoming bother me. Dunlap is a winner but can he do it in the Big XII?

Well everybody is throwing out names so Ill throw out one. How bout Chris Collins from Duke. I dont see why CU couldnt at least interview guys like this. Wish we would interview Boyle, McClain, Bennett, Collins, Dunlap or as many as possible.

2002 was the only NCAA year for McClain at Wyo. Still, his record there was pretty respectable. outside Fennis Dembo, Wyo hasn't been hoops city.

Another plus for Dunlap is his absolute commitment to academics and graduation rates. This would mesh well with CU's position about student athletes.

The other thing I like about Dunlap is that he's got great Pac 10 credibility. If Bohn feels confident that we're going to get the Pac invite and accept it, this has got to play into his thinking.

It also strengthens Bennett's candidacy. We need to be able to recruit California.

Boyle, Bennett and McClain would interest me. Still not sold on Dunlap. If he's everything some people here think he is, why has he managed to go from D-II power to two Pac-10 assistant jobs to a Big East assistant job without somebody else snapping him up?? To me, he's the Dave Logan of CU basketball coaching searches...

I dont know much about Bennetts's recruiting but I do know he can recruit in Austrailia lol. I think everybody mentioned in this thread would be a nice hire, I just think McClain is gonna be the guy.

If we hire McClain, I wonder if he'll make Abatemarco his Associate Head Coach. Might be hard for Bz to take Abatemarco to Wake since he was with NC State at the time of the recruiting/academic/eligibility/agent scandal.

Signing day is three days away...hire McClain tonight and save the recruiting class

I'm okay with this if hiring McClain is what keeps any current players from transferring. The recruiting class was already shaping up to be underwhelming, so this may also mean we need McClain to keep any progress we've been making with uncommitted guys to keep things from being disappointing to disastrous. We have exactly zero verbals at the moment, right?

Exactly correct. And we also got no commitments (verbal or otherwise) during the early period. There has been speculation that Bzdelik thought he was going to the Minnesota Timberwolves and didn't work the recruiting as hard has he otherwise would have over the summer and into the early fall.

a couple of things about Dunlap first he has the same if not better international connections as bennett, Luke Schenscher, was Metro bound if Georgia Tech hadnt made a run at him... Dunlap has a direct pipeline to Australia so that is a plus... on the negative side... ive heard from a couple reliable source the reason Brandon Jennings didnt go to U of A was Dunlap... Dunlap is a complete hardass... think frank martin + bobby knight so some primadonnas may not want to or be able to handle it

While Mcclain may save the recruiting class... I think we need to hire the right coach, not just someone who will save the recruiting class. Although Mcclain may very well be the right coach, I am just saying. Also didn't Bohn not hire Dunlap over Bzdelik because of practice times or something strange like that? I know Dunlap does like to have early practices.

If CU could get Bennett from St. Mary's that would be a steal. He's a very good coach... Not sure if he'd come to Boulder though..

apparently 9 news last night said that he put his hat into the ring already when the news first broke

Just so long as Bohn doesn't say "Well alrighty!" bring in Bennett for an interview and offer him the job the same day. Or course McClain probably gets to chat about it too. BCS I know you know Metro hoops, I like Dunlap too so I hope the parties at least make contact.

So Bohn is apparently intent on interviewing more than just McClain, according to an interview on 1510 this morning. Hope it really is true.

Names I think are worth mentioning:

-Steve McClain
-Randy Bennett
-Tad Boyle
-Tom Penders
-Lon Kruger (doubt he is interested but you never know)
-Brian Gregory (current head coach at Dayton)

Thoughts?

I like McClain, Bennett and Gregory.....not too high on Boyle and Kruger and Penders would not be as good as Ernie Kent or Billy Gillispie (who I am not in favor of)
