No offense

I've been worrying about our offense for a while. I was really worried we wouldn't be able to score against UW. The play calling last night appeared to be unimaginative but I think that is because we just don't have the horses to go against great defenses. To me, as usually is the case, it comes down to the line of scrimmage. We get dominated by good defensive lines and we were dominated last night.

Going forward, it is good to see we are recruiting top notch O line talent. If we want to have a duel threat offense, we will need that. But that talent may not kick in for a couple of years. Where does that leave us in the immediate future?

Also, going forward, I wonder if we will continue with this "co offensive coordinator" thing? Do you guys see us making a change there? It seems like the dynamic between Chev and Lindgren is good, but I wonder if it is a sustainable arrangement.

You nailed it. We can't match up with great DLines yet. You can only scheme so much, if you can't control the point of attack you are sunk. Love the OLine recruiting this year, as well as the development of some of our Fr/So big fellas!

Winner winner chicken dinner.

They did two things most teams didn't against us during the season; near constant pressure and contact on the QB and plugged all the middle running lanes forcing Lindsey outside.

We played three teams that had defenses that good this year (UM, USC, UW) and they pretty much all injured our QB and won the game.

We need a talent upgrade along the OL and at RB (size) that can block. The defense carried this team for the most part.

Our OL will have to get better and stronger in the offseason. We will have a new C and maybe a new LT.

I also noticed just how undersized JMac and Lindsay looked against that defense. Both got tossed around like rag dolls.

Sefo liufau doesnt throw the ball on time. He waits a beat longer than hes supposed to and that has been killing him the last few games. Deep throws underthrown cause incompletions, but crossing routes and slants thrown behind the receiver will get you tipped balls and pick sixes. Hopefully whoever the starter is next year will throw the ball as the receiver is coming out of their break instead of hanging on to the ball.

Regardless of his limitations, sefo is the toughest qb we've had in my memory, and Im proud to have a jersey with his number on it. Thank you, sefo, and good luck in the bowl game.

But as to playcalling, it was beyond abysmal. Predictable, stale, unimaginative. Washington was able to tee off on us all night, because we kept running what they knew we were going to run. Brian Lindgren still doesnt get playcalling. We run on first down almost every series. On third and seven, we run a seven yard out to devin ross every time. We run our first really successful run to lindsay, and we follow it up by running the same play again, getting creamed, and then punting. I dont want mike mac to leave, but if it means leavitt staying and Lindgren going it would be worth it. Our qbs have limitations, but they were not put into a position to succeed last night.

Dude they didn't have the time to be imaginative, good Lord.

O line wasn't making any holes for the ball carrier.
And when on D, CU's D line was locked up and late to get off blocks. On almost every UW running play (and there were MANY) the back got an extra 3-7 yards because of our defenders not free or out of position.

Should have kept Montez in. Eliminated a massive part of the offense with a hobbled sefo in there.

I like where were at going into this off-season in these aspects. I've thought for a long time that our offensive issues have stemmed from a general lack of size/strength. Wilson had, what, 6 months to teach/implement his program last year? I have all the confidence in the world that our O-line is going to make huge strides in the weightroom and be ready to win battles next year. Same goes for our backs. UW killed us with yards after contact. If we can start extending plays after contact and wearing down D units (especially at home), we'll be able to open up the rest of our playbook and give our D a nice break.

It's weird to say but our offense is based off the run game. When that goes out the window we can't score. Montez will step that aspect up next year though.

Amazing what happens when you play a very good, very athletic defensive and your QB isn't close to 100%

Can't wait til we get the 4* OLs in here...will make a world of difference as far as offensive consistency goes.

Washington simply was better coached with superior players. They won across the board at every phase, every position. Better QB, HB, WR, TE, OL, DL, LB, and DB's. The field felt like it was tilted against us all night because Washington dominated field position and time of possession. They imposed their will on us and didn't play outside themselves. Browning was not great, didn't force him to be, stayed patient with the running game, played field position content to wait. Sure enough we played into their hand by throwing the ball right to them eventually and they pounced on us and started pounding.

This year was a great story, an excellent brick to build a foundation upon provided we can wrap up a bowl game and hold key recruits we have committed and add a few more. Washington was 8-4 last year for instance. Took their lumps and came back stronger. We will need to get better at positions like the OL, QB, TE, DL, LB if we are going to climb the mountain, consistently compete with USC and win Pac 12 championships.

Agree with comment above saying we need to move on front this dual OC spot we are in. Not making a decision is not having a clear understanding of where we're going on offense and what we're trying to achieve IMO. I'd go with Chev personally.

I have said before here and I think many agreed that Mac is the coach we need right now but I don't think he is the guy that will lead us to a national championship. I feel like we may have run into that problem last night. He gets the very most out of a player by instilling base skills, faith and brotherhood in a team. And we still need a bunch of seasons of that before he isn't the guy in my opinion.

At some point though it stops being about getting more out of players than they knew they had and it becomes taking amazing athletes and fine tuning their football skills and being an incredible tactician in this very specific game. And last night I think we ran into a better team of athletes with a better tactical plan and it beat us. That will happen when we play teams at the very top until we take the next step. I'm ok with that for now.
