BOULDER - Nordic skier Rune Oedegaard and tennis player Julyette Steur were awarded CU Athlete of the Week on Tuesday for their athletic performances the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2.
Oedegaard, a junior from Molde, Norway (NTG Lillehammer/Molde Ski Club), took first place in his first collegiate race of the season at the University of Colorado’s Spencer James Nelson Invitational in Steamboat Springs, Colo on Friday. Finishing the Men’s 10K Classical race in 28 minutes, 28.2 seconds, he was just a half second ahead of Denver’s Pierre Guedon (28:28.7). The following day, Oedegaard placed second in the Men’s 20K Freestyle, falling just short of teammate Mads Stroem, who won the event in 52:40.8.
His first place victory marks the 10th race in Oedegaard’s career that he has won, with his second place finish rounding off his 21st podium appearance in 26 career races.
Steur, a junior from Apeldoorn, The Netherlands (Gymnasium Apeldoorn), won two singles matches, as well as a pair of doubles matches at the Rocky Mountain Tennis Center in Boulder on Saturday. Helping the Buffs sweep Air Force 4-1 and Colorado State 7-0 in Colorado’s first doubleheader since the 1997 season, Steur defeated AFA’s Tiffany Tran 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. In doubles, Steur teamed with fellow junior Ashley Tiefel at No. 3, defeating Chloe and Lily Forlini, 6-1. Later in the day, Steur won her ninth match of the season, defeating Natalie Heffron 7-5, 6-1 at the No. 1 singles slot. Steur and Tiefel now have eight wins in 10 matches this year, keeping the pair undefeated (4-0) in doubles play this spring.
