Okay, no one really got full credit for this trivia.

The correct answers were:

a) what it is

It was a logo created for use by the CU football program only.

b) what year it surfaced

1979

c) who's idea it was

Chuck Fairbanks, who really liked the Seattle Seahawks' logo

d) what was its successor?

In 1981, a Board of Regents mandate at its January meeting changed the logo and color scheme of the football program. Originally suggested to be “the deep blue Colorado of Colorado’s sky at 9,000 feet” by then-Regent Jack Anderson.

Here is my source that says "1979":

And states that the logo was created and even used (sparingly) during the 1979 season.

Which to believe? Both pages were likely written by Plati. Personally, I think 1979 is more likely, simply because of Fairbanks' nature of wanting to come in and put his personal stamp on things - I don't think he would have waited a year before making such changes.

Chuck didn't actually get to take over the program until April of 1979, so I go with 1980.

There is great controversey around when Fairbanks "took over" the program... he silently accepted the CU job late in the 1978 regular season while still w/ the Patriots, and prior to ultimately coaching a playoff game with them. He couldn't officially step into the CU role until the litigation was over (and his contract was bought out) in April 1979.

Methinks that Fairbanks was biding this time hatching up various disasterous schemes, such as how not to recruit, how to lose to Drake twice, and the creation of a new logo.

I'm sticking with 1979.

I'd also say that I don't remember ever seeing that logo on any hats, sweatshirts, or other CU memorabilia. Did it ever make it past the concept stages?

At one time I owned a visor with that logo on it.

If it exists, I am sure my father had it. I will have to ask my mother to look and see if something like that still lives at her house. If she does I'll have her take a snapshot.

For the sake of tying up loose ends - Dave Plati confirmed for me that this logo was used in 1979 - 1980.

Also, he said that the logo was to go on helmets but when the decals arrived, they were too large for the helmets so they went with plain gold. I think I just gave The Helmet Project something the work on.

Wow, I didn't think that I'd get a response, let alone a finished product so quick, but the Helmet Project guy did a mock up of what this 1979-1980 helmet might have looked like:



It is the latest addition to their website, under "Made Up Stuff"

I think we would have fared better against Drake sporting these...

That thing looks like a locomotive with road kill attached. Glad they never got to use it.
