On coaches leaving in the middle of contracts.

We penalize kids who sign an LOI or otherwise end up registered at a school if they want to leave. Yes they can be granted a release and yes if they graduate they can grad transfer but for the most part the school owns them for at least a year after they want to be elsewhere.

Coaches on the other hand bail out on their kids and on the school with no penalty other than the buy out in their contract.

What would happen if a rule were passed that required a coach to sit out, unpaid, a full season if moving from one P5 school to another or even from one FBS school to another. The coach would be permitted to move without penalty if his contract is expired, if he is fired, or if he becomes aware of and reports significant violations that occurred at a school prior to his arrival or occurred while he was there outside of the scope of his influence.

It will never happen but it would make some coaches be much more honest about their intentions. "Sorry I won't sign the 2 year extension, I am currently hoping to be able to take a job in the SEC next year."

Sometimes they sign extensions because they are leaving and it's a "thank you" by putting a bigger buyout in. Becomes a win/win since the new deal also positions the coach as being really in demand.

But, yeah, the basic point that coaches can move around while they tell these young men how there's no transfer portal in life... how the NCAA members say they can't afford to pay players a profit share while they shell out the cash they do for coaches... there's a ton of hypocrisy.

I'm telling you: coaching pool salary caps.

Poaching would still happen, but the desire to leave from one situation to the other would be greatly diminished if the other school can't double a coach's salary without screwing himself when in comes to hiring assistants.

Obviously, the "have" schools will hate the idea, but it only seems fair, if we're going to continue to limit student-athletes' abilities to move freely from place to place (and let's face it - they're never going to get the same amount of compensation as what they're making for the schools, athletic departments, and coaches, either.)

I'm definitely at the point of saying that we need to align the mission of college sports to what it is supposed to be.

If there's more money than some of these athletic departments know what to do with, then either:

1 - pay the players; or,

2 - use it to offer more sports & provide scholarship opportunities to more young people

The mission of college football should not be what it has become, which is to out-compete the NFL for the local public's sports entertainment dollar. College sports is supposed to be about enriching the college experience for students, not enriching professional coaches.
