one rags thoughts on pac 12 coaches

FYI: Ranked Last:

12. Mike MacIntyre, Colorado
Record at Colorado: 6-18 (2 years)
Career Record: 22-39 (5 years)

MacIntyre didn’t inherit much to work with when he replaced Jon Embree after the 2012 season. The Buffaloes are 6-18 over the last two years and have won only one contest in conference play. While the overall record isn’t pretty, MacIntyre has this program on the right track. Colorado lost four Pac-12 games by five points or less last season, and with an experienced roster returning in 2015, the Buffaloes should show progress in the win column. Prior to Colorado, MacIntyre went 16-21 at San Jose State, including a 15-9 mark over the final two years. MacIntyre should move up this list in the coming seasons.

Any time I've clinked on a article link with the word "Rank" in it, I've come away shaking my head. I need to stop doing that.

Agree 100%. more pedantic of a topic than most here are interested in getting into, but these subjective evaluations would be better served by creating groupings (e.g. these guys are the best coaches, these guys suck, these are holding their own) instead of rankings. Rankings just open up silly debates over whether #3 and #4 should be swapped.

As a reference, here's the rankings from last year when MM was #9:

9. Mike MacIntyre, Colorado
Record at Colorado: 4-8 (1 year)
Career Record: 20-29 (4 years)
Colorado’s Program Rank: No. 9 in the Pac-12, No. 53 nationally

The arrow is clearly pointing up on MacIntyre’s tenure at Colorado. The Buffaloes were only 4-8 overall and won just one contest in Pac-12 play, but the program took a step forward last year after struggling under Jon Embree. Prior to taking over in Boulder, MacIntyre spent three years at San Jose State, transforming the Spartans from a 1-11 team in 2010 to a 10-2 squad in 2012. According to the recruiting ranks, Colorado’s roster ranks No. 12 in the Pac-12, and standout receiver Paul Richardson must be replaced in 2014. MacIntyre needs time to successfully rebuild Colorado, but with a few breaks this season, the Buffaloes could make a bowl. After all, that isn't impossible considering MacIntyre’s second team at San Jose State made a four-game jump in the win column.

does Althon's only come out this time of year? It might be a monthly publication but the only time it has any run is pre-season prediction time.

His pedigree before coming to CU and losing a lot of games is that he had a losing record in a second-tier conference. What exactly is wrong with rating him 12?

Doesn't explain the situation. Numbers are not everything.

It would make more sense in groupings, but I thought they mostly got the order right.

I would probably put Rich Rod above Graham. Peterson seems too high and Sark probably a little too low. He did take over a terrible Washington program and USC was on scholarship restrictions so we will see how he finishes there. I am a huge Whittingham fan so I think he could be higher. I used to like Anderson but the last 6 months have turned me off a little.

I agree and when it comes to CU, even the most optimistic supporter of HCMM can't put him above another coach in the Pac 12 until he shows some more respectability in the W column.

I don't think there's anything wrong with ranking him 12th.

My point, is that if you rank him 12 and conclude by saying that you expect him to rise in the rankings, isn't it just an admission that your ranking is wrong?

Or maybe he is saying that he expects other coaches to leave and be replaced by less capable hires.

Yeah, basically 10-12 are pretty interchangeable right now. Not worth really arguing minute details trying to separate them.

You go 1-17 in the conference then I do not know how you can put him any place other than 12th. He said several coaches would rise in the rankings - I think it is an attempt at being nice.

I do not see how you can put Dykes below MacIntyre, Dykes beat him this year and showed better improvement.

To me there are 3 areas to evaluate college coaches:

1. Recruiting - I subscribe to the "its the jimmys and joes not the x's and o's" school of thought so if you can't recruit you are in trouble.

2. Having your team ready to play on game day. Meaning they are fundamentally sound in all phases of the game and are ready to go on game day.

3. In game coaching. Making the in game adjustments making crucial calls in a game to give your team a better chance to win. Really comes into play in close games.

I think MacIntyre does okay on #2 but has to improve on 1 and 3. I think most people would rank him toward the bottom of the Pac 12. I could see Leach below him but I don't like Leach so that may not be fair, but I could not put anyone else below him.
