Oregon High School Unveils Black FieldTurf Field

Since the turf didn't have to be dyed with the green color, the school was able to save $150,000.00 on the playing field itself.

Sutherland said he read a study that said that the hottest FieldTurf color was gold because it reflects heat and that black doesn’t reflect the heat as bad as some colors.

I find it interesting that black fields would not be as hot as gold fields. I guess the black turf field rumor for Maryland did have some merit to it. Maybe CU will be that school.

There's heat and there's heat. I worked on a roofing crew in college and the worst days were on a white roof because they reflected everything right into you. Like standing on a mirror. Black on the other hand is going to absorb all of that sun and heat and the temperature on the field is going to be nuts in a sunny climate. We can get away with that in Oregon because it's not high altitude (more intense sun) and it's a hell of a lot cooler here than in Colorado through the fall.

It would be a brutal mistake to install something like this at CU.

On another note, Maryland did consider gray turf and I read somewhere that Maryland was in fact not joking about black turf.
