THE SANDWICH BAG brims with weed.
On a frosty January evening in Eugene, a University of Oregon student plops onto a couch, nestled between a whirring space heater and a muted television at a friend's off-campus apartment, and pulls a nugget from the bag. At his feet sits a backpack emblazoned with the logo of the Rose Bowl, which he and his teammates had won barely a week before. "Purple Kush," he says of his preferred marijuana strand, which he rolls into a hefty joint between his forefingers and thumbs. "It's pretty much all I smoke."

Read more about the pot problem at other elite football programs here.

The joint, to which he adds a dash of tobacco to make a spliff, is typical for this student-athlete. "Bongs and pipes mean more evidence," he says. He lights up, kicks back and exhales a dense cloud. Normally, he'd pass the spliff to one of his Oregon football teammates, but tonight he smokes alone. "Most of the guys are waiting until after winter workouts," he says. Once those conclude in March, he adds, they'll gather in clusters to partake together. About half the team smokes, he estimates. "It's a team thing. Like video games."

I assume that Henderson (or another Post hack) is busy writing the attack-on-CU rebuttal right now.

Wow! Not surprised dudes are smoking weed. Just surprised by how blunt (pun intended) they are about it.

It wasn't so long ago CU was the dope smokingest school in the conference.

Leaving the B12 and joining the 12Pac is still, like, so totally awesome, dude.

so, old guy pot-culture question: i know that the weed is like way more concentrated and powerful than back when i was in college, but when did they start mixing it with tobacco?

yeah, i know-- go ahead and take your shots.

Mixing tobacco with purple kush just shows how dumb this dude is. Purple kush don't need no mixing.

you would think our 4-20 celebration would help us get better football recruits.

I expect the next article to be about college football players and drinking nice reporting ESPN! Truthfully I am happy with the 50ish percent number reported by ESPN because I know for a fact its closer to 75% of the Duck players smoking weed. While I myself have no reason to smoke pot and never will I could care less if the Duck players do it as long as it doesn't affect their on the field performance. Oh and I would probably smoke weed if I lived in Eugene since there is nothing else to do lol

Next thing you know they are going to have an article on the players participating in premarital sex with the girls on campus!!!! Oh, the shame!!

Sometimes the media is like a blonde girl. "Duh.....big red truck!"

I think it was EDSBS who pointed it out, but if that many Oregon players are getting high it just makes their no huddle offense that much more impressive.

Not really, once you read the various articles on how the system actually works - it really is an amazingly simple process for the players; it doesn't take much intelligence at all to work within it. Designing, coordinating and running it on the coaches' end does take a bit of smarts though - for the players on the field though, it's really not that hard.

Yeah, but, like when they're stoned, dude, everything kinda slows down, ya know?

Makes it burn slower. Also I think it's more of a European thing.

Oregon only uses 20-30 plays in its offense so its not as hard as it seems.

Not that I have ever partaken, but friends have indicated that Eugene-grown marijuana is supposed to be unbelievable. Add being in a college town with tons of hippies to VERY smoker friendly legislation narrowly defining reasonable suspicion up there in Oregon and you have a recipe for lots of people smoking the kind buds.

I'm more surprised to learn when a college football player DOES NOT smoke weed these days. But, conservative folks make a big deal out of the whole thing....

One day marijuana will be legalized and taxed by the federal government. The money will pay off the defecit, guarantee social security benefits, and allow the DEA to go after real threats like cocaine, meth, and heroin.
