Deep into the season. We’ve had some teams lose games that in the past would have been elimination games but with the 12 team playoff format these more likely are just for seeding purposes.
What’s that smell? Could be coming from a lot of places but one source is the Tuesday night games this week.
Three games, six teams, and a total of 7 (yes, seven) wins between them against 27 losses. If you are really stuck for something to watch, the least bad may be Lousy Tech (2-3) also known as Louisiana Tech at New Messed up State University (1-5,) aka New Mexico State.
Wednesday night actually has two good teams playing. Western Kentucky (4-2) is at Sam Houston State (5-1) playing for the lead in C-USA. Both will probably be in bowls but winner may avoid such garden spots as Frisco TX and Montgomery AL.
Not much risk of qualifying for a bowl with the other two teams playing Wednesday. Florida International (2-4) is at INEPT, oops UTEP (0-6.)
Thursday is a better game than the records would indicate. Boston College 4-2 at Virginia Tech 3-3. BC started the season with a then unexpected win over Florida State and come close to beating Missouri. Virginia Tech lost to Rutgers by 3 and to #6 Miami in a game that many believe was won for the Hurricanes by the refs.
Friday nights games smell a little strange as well. Duke (5-1) is usually looking forward to basketball by this point in the season. Instead they are hosting Florida State (1-5) who were expecting to be in contention for the playoff, not for the basement. Duke hasn’t been impressive in their wins but they are winning. FSU looks like they have given up and are mailing it in.
(2) Oregon(6-0) coming off a huge win against the top of the B1G now visits the bottom, Purdue (1-5.) Suddenly reeling and losers of 3 straight Oklahoma State (3-3) will struggle to avoid 4 losses in a row at (13) BYU (6-0.)
No predictions here on winners but Saturday is setting up for a lot of movement in the top 25 as well as conference standings. We are getting to the point in the season when a lot of teams that don’t have playoff aspirations are looking towards win 6 and bowl eligibility.
Interesting games start early. After getting blown out in their opener (10) Clemson (5-1)has rolled against a less than stout schedule. They host Virginia (4-2) who has been up and down coming off a close loss but would love a win against a ranked opponent.
Can we hire BWalk to become a Nebraska fan. Huskers (5-1) are at (16) Indiana (6-0.) Fusker fans think they are back but they might only be favored in one more game this year. The Corn finishing with 6 straight losses would be glorious. (and possible.)
Louisville (4-2) is home against (6) Miami (6-0) They better not be hoping for any help from the refs as Miami has been on the receiving end of a number of favorable game changing calls this year.
Last week we had the Red River Shootout, This week we get the Frosted Flakes Bowl. Tony the Tiger shows up as Auburn (2-4) is at (19) Missouri (5-1) in a battle of the Tiger mascot. Loser goes to the litter box.
A battle to stay in the top 25 includes (24) Michigan (4-2) at (22) Illinois (5-1.) Wolverines aren’t used to being out of the rankings, Illini aren’t used to being in them, who gets to stay?
Two giant games this week. Neither of these teams is going to fall out of the rankings but with each recently losing games and not dominating in their wins last week the loser between (7) Alabama (5-1) at (11) Tennessee (5-1) could take a drop while the winner will be right back in playoff contention.
In the same mid-afternoon time slot we also get (12) Notre Dame (5-1) at Georgia Tech (4-2) in a game the Irish need to have hope for the playoff.
The other huge game in early evening has (5)Georgia (5-1) who hasn’t been impressive in recent weeks at (1)Texas (6-0). Longhorns have been dominating all year.
Big 12 competition is heating up. In addition to the BYU game mentioned earlier Arizona State (5-1) is at Cincinnati (4-2.) Ranked teams have (17) Kansas State (5-1) at West Virginia (3-3) and UCF (3-3) at (9) Iowa State (6-0.)
Blowout of the week, I wanted to go with (2) Oregon at Purdue but they could take this as a bye week after their huge win. Instead Hawaii (2-4) At Washington State (5-1) gets the honors. Hawaii usually doesn’t play well on the mainland, this year they haven’t played well anywhere. The Cougars are still mad about being relegated and won’t pass up the opportunity for a look at us score.
A couple of garbage games this week but one stands out. How bad is Kent State at 0-6? Bowling Green is 2-4 this year and yet are close to a three touchdown favorite over the Golden Flushes
Locally CSU (3-3) is at Air Fart (1-5.) At least the pageantry at the Academy is worth seeing because their football team is terrible losing five straight and not being close in any. CSU isn’t very good but even that is too much for the Falcons.
At least the weather is nice at San Jose State (4-2) as Wyoming (1-5) visits, the final score likely won’t be nice for the Cowboys who have one of the worst offenses in the nation to go with one of the worst defenses.
Northern Colorado gets an extra week to celebrate their win last week over Weber State with a bye this week. They have some beatings coming in the near future but they get to enjoy this win for a few extra days.
The RMAC definitely doesn’t stink. This small college season is an exciting one with what looks to be a close race for the title.
All the conference leaders are in action
(14)CSU Pueblo (6-1,5-0) is hosting Black Hills State (3-3,2-2)
(8)Western Colorado (6-0,4-0) has South Dakota Mines(3-4,2-3) taking the long trip to Gunnison
(12)Colorado Mines (5-1,3-1) is at Adams State (0-6,0-4) Oh they are bad. Chance for Mines to work on some things.
