It may still be August but it feels more than a little like football outside Settle in and enjoy the opening weekend of college football.

As is usual a lot of teams are opening with creampuffs, or at least they hope they are creampuffs looking to get an easy win on the record and some game action before they play a real opponent. Unusual for the first week of the season we have three big games matching ranked teams. Have to wade through a couple days of less than exciting contest before we get to those.

A lot of teams open their season with a Thursday night game and most of these games have no business anywhere close to prime time.

Unable to find a school with three directions in their name or a barber college, Nebraska travels to play Cincinnati. Huskers are favored on the road. First Rhule of Nebraska football, expect them to figure out a way to lose.

(25) Boise State goes to Tampa to meet South Florida leaving behind the purple plastic field for the land of humidity and cockroaches big enough to trip over. No Jeanty to carry the offensive load for them could make them liable to upset.

Lots of other Thursday games but none of them are of much interest unless you like blowouts and bad football teams. By mid-season though we will be looking at some of those schools for bowl bids and conference championships

Friday other than the Buffs game isn’t a lot better.

(12) Illinois couldn’t at least pay a MAC team to come in and take a loss, they had to schedule FCS sub .500 Western Illinois. Guess they got them first before Nebraska could schedule them.

We do get shockingly an SEC team playing a Big 12 team and even going on the road to do it. Auburn (5-7 last year) , which is Alabama’s little brother, goes to Waco to play Baylor (8-5 last year) , which is the Texas school's weird cousin.

Saturday should be a fun one.

Start right off with (1)Texas at (3) Ohio State in a game which could very well be repeated in the playoffs.

If that one doesn’t hold your interest at the same time we have Syracuse (10-3 last season) at (24) Tennessee. Vols are ranked but lost a lot of talent to graduation and the portal.

Looking for a huge upset potential. (7) Oregon hosts FCS Montana State. The Bobcats went 15-1 last season losing by 3 in the FCS Championship game. If Oregon isn’t careful!!!

The second huge game of the day is an evening battle with (9) LSU at (4) Clemson. Another two teams are looking for the playoff but with less margin than the two in the early matchup.

With no NFL games we get two interesting contests on Sunday.
Virginia Tech off a disappointing 6-7 season faces (13) South Carolina.

Two more playoff contenders face off. Not quite as heated as the “Catholics vs. the Convicts” games but (6) Notre Dame at (10) Miami should still be worth watching.

If you still haven’t had enough, Monday night has TCU at North Carolina. Will Belichick bring his stripper granddaughter, err girlfriend while Tarheels fans hope he can bring more respectability to their mediocre program than he shows in his personal life.

More than a few contenders for the garbage game of the week. One contender is Kennesaw State 2-10 last year at Wake Forest who were worse than their 4-8 last season

This gives the Kent State Golden Flushes a week off before they return to their regular well deserved derision. They play Merrimack, a sub .500 FCS team last season. Lose here and all hope is lost for them.

Many contenders for blowout of the week as well. I’ll ignore the games against FCS opponents and go with a bad Nevada at (2) Penn State. Be very careful in the showers.

Locally some interesting games this week. Thursday night Wyoming will try to take the Zip out of Akron at their place.

Air Force, hoping for a better season than last year, opens as usual against a weak FCS team as they try to get all their new players coordinated in that crazy offense. This year it is Bucknell coming into Falcon Stadium on Saturday.

Late Saturday night the sheep from CSEwe are probably going to be wishing they were playing Bucknell instead of Washington who is a three TD favorite.

Northern Colorado may actually get a positive start to their season hosting D2 Chadron State.

Small college football gets off to a running start. Unlike some of the power conference BCS schools they don’t avoid serious out of conference competition.

Thursday night has some conference games scheduled including CSU Pueblo hosting South Dakota Mines in a league game. Pueblo trying to repeat as conference champions and be a national title contender again.

Out of conference Western Colorado is hosting West Texas A&M who was down last year but traditionally is strong. Western only lost to Pueblo last year and will be solid again.

Colorado Mesa is at Central Washington who beat them last year in Grand Junction. Mesa has been building towards competing for a conference championship after a down stretch. Winning this one would be a confidence boost for them.

Saturday last year's new bottom feeder Adams State is at Western New Mexico. Not only did Adams not win a game last year but lost every contest by double digits. WNMU was one of two that were as close as 10 points, the other being Fort Loser.

Fort Loser plays host to William Jewell College who beat them up last year in Durango.

I'm kind of a Western New Mexico fan since it's 1. totally no risk since they are usually terrible and 2. I lived in Silver City a year or two....

so Adams State must be awful.

I'm not 100% on the Clemson rah rah rah....Clubnik for Heisman thing I heard during Farmageddon.
RMAC as a conference is interesting in that they usually have a team or two who are among the elite in the nation in D2. Pueblo has national titles, Mines has been in the Championship game, for a time Mesa was a national title contender. Western Colorado is pushing to compete at that level.

Then at the same time they manage to have one or two teams that are just awful, beyond bad. Fort Lewis went 3 seasons without winning a game and really didn't get close. Adams has been an easy win for most teams for years. WNMU has rarely been good.

When the top teams play each other it's very good football, when the bottom teams play it is usually at least competitive and fun. When those two cross paths there are some laughable blowouts. Last year Pueblo score 66, 67, and 58 on consecutive weekends and probably could have had 80 in any one of those games had they not decided just to run out the clock.

And the announcer was saying, yeah they have to punt here. Apparently snuck in backup QB as punter. As said above, you have to love it.
