Big changes in the top of the rankings and just in time for a week when their games aren’t worth watching.
Georgia had been ranked #1 but barely escaping an upset by Kentucky (yes they have a team that plays with the pointy ball) dropped them to second behind Texas who beat those titans of college football Colorado State and UTSA by a combined 108-7, and by the way mixed in a win at Michigan.
Georgia is so upset they are taking the week off to get over the disappointment, Texas and #3 Ohio State are also taking the week off by bringing inpunching bags opponents from the SunBelt Conference.
Still have a couple more weeks until the midweek games start. This week’s one game Thursday schedule isn’t can’t miss TV either. South Alabama (1-2) beat a winless FCS NorthWestern State (0-3) 87-10 last week. At Appalachian State (2-1) will be much tougher.
Friday night opens with a not good Stanford (1-1) at better than expected Syracuse (2-0) in what is strange to call an ACC game.
All eyes though Friday will be on Stinkoln Nebraska where the now (22)Cornhuskers (3-0) host (24)Illinois (3-0) to see which overrated team will stay in the rankings.
Later Friday San Jose (3-0) is at Washington State (3-0) who has 2 wins over P4 programs including in state rival Washington last week. San Jose’s schedule so far has been generously less than impressive.
Saturday morning's early schedule is less impressive than it has been in recent weeks.
Best is probably North Carolina State (2-1) looking for the upset at (21)Clemson (2-1) with the Tigers as a two touchdown favorite.
Speaking of favorites (3)Ohio State (2-0) is favored by almost 40 over visiting Marshal (1-1.)
It’s early to be talking about saving seasons but Kansas (1-2) at West Virginia (1-2) just might be a game between teams looking to do that.
Moving towards the middle of the day an interesting game could be Rutgers (2-0) at Virginia Tech (2-1.) Neither team has beaten anyone of note but a win here would make getting to a bowl much easier.
As we have come to expect the two games of the day that match top 25 teams and probably the most interesting games of the day start at close to the same time.
(11)USC (2-0) in its first visit to The Big House as a B1G member could move into the top 10 with a win over (18)Michigan (2-1) who was embarrassed by Texas and wants to prove that it still belongs in the rankings.
For an early jump on B12 standings (12)Utah (3-0) is at (14)Oklahoma State (3-0.) Utah will probably have QB Cam Rising back with his injured finger.
In addition to the Buffs there are some quality evening games.
Iowa should watch the film of (6)Tennessee (3-0) at (15)Oklahoma (3-0) to understand that scoring points can be a good thing. Each scores more in some games than Iowa does in ½ a season. The Vols have already scored 191 points in 3 games, Oklahoma a paltry 101.
The Hawkeyes scored 216 all last year in 14 games. Iowa(2-1) is scoring more this year against weak competition. At Minnesota (2-1) they will are favored but the oddsmakers don’t expect a lot of scoring.
Interesting game late with (13) Kansas State (3-0) at BYU (3-0.) K-State dominated against Arizona last week while BYU has struggled some with a weak schedule so far.
With the schedule padding patsy games this one won’t be the biggest margin but the blowout of the week could be at Missouri. (7) Misery has been waiting for years to be ranked this high and wants to go higher. Vanderbilt (2-1) Commodes (oops Commodores) come in with a less than impressive resume.
Speaking of Commodes the Golden Flushes of Kent State (0-3) are the victims for (10)Pedo State (2-0.) The margin of this one will only depend on when PSU decides to quit scoring. Stay out of the showers.
Another “What are they thinking?” game. Cal (3-0) is at Florida State (0-3) with FSU favored. Cal has a couple of quality wins and FSU hasn’t beaten anyone but themselves.
Local games don’t give much reason for optimism.
Air Force gets a much needed week off. Wyoming (0-3) is at North Texas (2-1)
Garbage game of the week is local. Inept UTEP (0-3) is at CSU (1-2.) How bad is UTEP? CSU is a double digit favorite.
Northern Colorado (0-3) came close to winning last week. Could this week at Stephen F. Austin (1-2) be it? Not likely but they have a chance.
Time for the small schools to get down to conference business. Edit: Now using most recent coaches poll. Despite a close call Mines moved up. Pueblo didn't drop despite a loss, logical when it was a close loss to the now #2 team.
(4)Colorado Mines (2-0) survived a scare at Washburn KS. They open conference play at Chadron State (1-1.)
(15)Western Colorado (2-0) gets an easy one hosting Adams State (0-2)
(22)Pueblo (2-1) coming off a close loss to highly ranked (2)Grand Valley State hopes to re-establish themselves at the top of the conference starting at home against Colorado Mesa (1-1) who got one vote in the poll.
And Black Hills State (1-1) is hosting suddenly hot Fort Lewis (1-1). Could the Skyhawks actually have a winning streak? After winning for the first time in over 5 years they might find that they actually like it.
