Week 5? Already, season is flying by and very little has been settled although Florida State Head Coach Mike Norvell may want to settle on a real estate agent if they don’t turn things around fast.
Again not much before the weekend. Thursday's game is Army (3-0) at Temple (1-3). Owls are a good mascot for Temple because “Who” cares?
Friday nights have been good so far this year and this one looks to continue that. Are hookers and blow back? The U looks to be. (7)Miami (4-0) has dominated so far this season, visiting Virginia Tech (2-2) is still looking for their first P4 win, not likely to happen here.
Washington (3-1) at Rutgers (3-0) are teams not expected to figure in the B1G or playoff race but a win here could get some poll votes and be a step closer to bowl eligibility.
Big game in the B12 starts off Saturday morning between ranked teams.
(20) Oklahoma State (3-1) at (23) Kansas State (3-1) both lost last week and look to avoid losing two in a row.
A number of B1G schools as usual have fattened up their records with weak OOC schedules and will now start to find out if they are any good. Maryland (3-1) is at Indiana (4-0) each hoping to keep thinking they are as good as their records. (12) Michigan (3-1) isn’t close to what they have been recently but should be good enough to beat visiting Minnesota (2-2.)
Nebraska (3-1) at Purdue (1-2) had their bubble burst last week losing to ranked Illinois. Might be time for a classic fusker meltdown and loss to Purdue.
Big battle of ranked teams mid-day. (15) Louisville (3-0) at (16) Notre Dame (3-1) in South Bend. A Louisville win would effectively kill Irish hopes of a playoff bid and give the Cardinals a big boost.
Meanwhile Auburn (2-2) has not looked good. Hosting (21) Oklahoma (3-1) who is coming off a blowout loss to Tennessee isn’t likely to make them look any better.
Another coach feeling some heat from the fans has to be Mike Elko at (24)Texas A&M (3-1) who host Arkansas (3-1.) Aggies fans aren’t known to be patient and expected more for their money. He isn’t getting fired this soon but they won’t be happy. A win here would be big for the Hogs.
Most fans would be surprised to see that North Carolina (3-1) at Duke (4-0) have those records but Duke has played one of the easiest schedules in the country and the Heels aren’t much better. Carolina’s defense may be seen on a milk carton after giving up 70 to Sun Belt Conference James Madison last week.
Early evening games of interest include Stanford (2-1) at (17)Clemson (2-1). Clemson is a huge favorite but isn’t the same dominant Clemson we are used to while Stanford has been better than expected.
Michigan State (3-1) can expect (3)Ohio State (3-0) to abuse them like they have abused co-eds in the past. The Buckeyes likely name the score at home.
Curiosity game, at the start of the year who would have imagined SMU as a favorite over Florida State? They are. Florida State (1-3) at SMU (3-1.) Seminoles finally got a win, barely, over Cal last week but does that even count?
As it has been all year two of the best matchups of the day are on at the same time.
(19) Illinois (4-0) isn’t used to being ranked at (9) Penn State (3-0.) The State of Pedo will be rocking as the Illini find the child abusers more ready for them than Nebraska was last week.
If you want to watch that one though save it for the second screen because the game of the season so far brings (2) Georgia (3-0) to (4) Alabama (3-0). Even without Sabin in charge the Tide hasn’t missed a beat so far. Meanwhile a close win at Kentucky dropped UGA from the #1 spot in the rankings. Both of these teams are likely to be in the playoffs but the winner has a big edge towards the first round bye.
Late may be interesting to catch Washington State (4-0) at (25) Boise State (2-1.) Cougars trying to show they shouldn’t have been ignored in re-alignment, Broncos almost upset Oregon and have scored in bunches.
A couple late games of interest in the Big 12.
Cincinnati (3-1) at Texas Tech (3-1.) Neither has been impressive but both have bowl expectations.
Arizona (2-1) but unimpressive at (10) Utah (4-0) who is still dealing with a rash of injuries.
Blowout game of the week has Mississippi State (1-3) at (1) Texas (4-0.) Texas scores in bunches, Mississippi State can’t stop anyone, and Longhorn’s don’t want to let the Bama-UGA game get all the attention.
What are they thinking? (18) Iowa State (3-0) again is pretty good. At Houston (1-3) they are only a 13.5 point favorite. Houston is bad, as in really bad. Look for a big margin.
Don’t have to travel far for the garbage game of the week. Some say the state of New Mexico should give up college football. From the looks of it this year they already have.
In the “Rio Grande Rivalry” which would be better called the “Rotten Chili Bowl” New Mexico (0-4) visits Las Cruces to play New Mexico State (1-3.) Only a win by the Aggies (Arghies, as in argh they are bad) over a mediocre FCS team stands between these schools and being winless almost halfway into the season. Somehow despite losing every game including one at home to an FCS opponent the Lo Bros are favored by more than a TD.
Closer to home things don’t get much better. Air Force (1-2) is at Wyoming (0-4). Air Force has scored 10 total points against FBS competition this year and only 21 against a bad FCS team. Wyoming managed to lose to an FCS team and hasn’t been close against FBS competition.
In Greeley Northern Colorado (0-4) hosts Cal Poly (1-2). Poly picked up a win over a D2 school last week while the Bears were again getting blown out but with two bad teams this may be one of UNCs best chances to pick up a win this season.
Thankfully the situation with our local small colleges is much better. Rankings subject to change if a newer coaches poll comes out.
(4)Colorado Mines (3-0,1-0) coming off two close wins in a row gets Black Hills State (2-1,1-1) at home.
(22) CSU Pueblo (3-1,2-0) is close to having the week off at Adams State (0-3,0-1.)
(14)Western Colorado (3-0,1-0) who blew out Adams last week is at New Mexico Highlands (0-3,0-1.)
And back to their losing ways but at least not winless Fort Lewis (1-2,0-1) hosts South Dakota Mines (2-2,1-1.)
