MAC schools are still taking paychecks for traveling to P5 stadium and mostly picking up losses so no early games this week.
This is the time of year that Sun Belt conference teams are supposed to be doing the same thing. Someone forgot to send out the memo about losing though so last week Sun Belt schools beat then #6 Texas A&M and #8 Notre Dame. They also signed the severance check for Nebraska coach Scott Frost adding a final one score loss to his record.
Friday night has two games that should be fun.
Florida State (2-0) looks like they are on the rise having beaten LSU at LSU a couple weeks ago. They try to get a solid start to conference play at Louisville (1-1) who struggled to get by UCF last week.
For local fans the big Friday night game has Air Force (2-0) leaving civilization to play at Wyoming (2-1) Temperature should be comfortable but it will be windy because, well it’s Laramie and it’s always windy.
Saturday gives us two battles between top 25 teams.
With as big a cultural clash as college football can give us the weirdness that is College Station has Texas A&M (24) trying to stay in the rankings against the bikini and coke crowd from Miami (13). Jimbo talked a big game all off-season signing the nations top recruiting class. The Aggie fans don’t think he’s so funny after losing to Appalachian State.
Another match of weird versus wild has BYU (12) at Oregon (25) with the Ducks trying to overcome losing their opener on national TV a couple weeks ago.
Also of interest including top 25 teams Penn State (22) which started the year out of the rankings and Auburn who still are a combined 4-0 but neither has beaten anyone impressive. Likely the winner will be ranked next week, the loser not.
Of PAC12 interest Mel Tucker and the Molester (oops Michigan) State (11) Spartans visit the Washington (2-0) Huskies.
From the good to the bad one of the nation's worst teams Connecticut (1-2) goes to the Big House against Michigan (4). Michigan has scored 107 points combined in their last two games, if they wanted they could probably score that many this week. Michigan should be embarrassed by their schedule having already hosted powerhouses Colorado State and Hawaii.
Not to be outdone Alabama (2) will be visited by mighty Louisiana Monroe.
Most of the other top 25 teams are playing against opponents who should be finished off before halftime. An exception is Georgia (1) at South Carolina (1-1).
And woe to the Corn. They finally fire the Golden Boy, the Savior, the man who wasn’t just a player but who was the quarterback who watched Lawrence Phillips drag his girlfriend down the stairs by the hair before he became a coach.
Now it’s a new era, yes no more one score losses. They are going to do it right and get run up on by Oklahoma (6.) They may be rid of Frosting but the cupcakes are still there in the players and staff.
Some other PAC 12 games of interest include San Diego State (1-1) at Utah (14) and Fresno State (1-1) at USC (7.)
Facing potential (probable) embarrassment Arizona (1-1) host FCS North Dakota State (2-0) that has a history of beating bad P5 teams, how bad is Arizona?
Before the season if someone had said that Cal would be 2-0 going into the game and Notre Dame would be 0-2 most would have thought them crazy but Cal goes into South Bend in exactly that situation. Imagine the panic among the Irish fans if Cal could actually win this one.
How can we talk about the nation’s worst teams and not include Kansas (2-0?)
Instead we have West Virginia (0-2) who should finally get a win against FCS Towsend.
Strongly competing for the worst of the worst title, as usual, are Connecticut as mentioned earlier going to the slaughter against Michigan, Massachusetts who may have their best chance of the year against FCS Stony Brook, and New Mexico State (0-3, yes one loss ahead of the competition) who may want to get lost on their way to Wisconsin (1-1) who will likely be motivated after losing at home last week.
A new contender for worst FBS program, Charlotte (0-3) is a 19 point underdog at Georgia State (0-2.)
Locally in addition to Air Force going to Wyoming local CSU (0-2) heads to Washington State (2-0). How will all 23 of their faithful fans respond to an 0-3 start.
Northern Colorado, fresh off losing in Wyoming gets another chance against a team they might actually beat, or maybe not. They go to Lamar (0-2) who has lost 10 straight games, their last win? At Northern Colorado last year.
Local small colleges get conference play underway after a challenging and mostly disappointing out of conference slate.
Western is hoping to contend for the conference this year. They should get a good idea where they stand opening at Pueblo this week.
Colorado Mines faces a less challenging task at Adams State (and making the trip before it gets cold.)
Mesa host South Dakota Mines
