Fall is here and it is time to see which schools will fall in this weekend’s games. Last week didn’t produce any big upsets but we know they are coming. Who is going to have their season spoiled this week?
The Thursday games don’t inspire much excitement with three directional schools and Temple who is normally down.
Friday isn’t much better but Cincinnati (3-1) would like to put a scare into (18) UCF who is going to have to come back strong after losing two weeks ago to Pittsburgh if they are going to declare themselves National Champions again. The other game is a bad New Mexico team visiting a mediocre San Jose State squad.
Biggest game this week looks to be in the SEC. Now that (10) Florida has a coach that doesn’t violate sharks they are 5-0 and get to host (5) Auburn. Loser won’t fall far but may be out of the playoff chase.
Big 10 (plus little 4) has the other two games matching ranked teams. Ohio State gets to play a real team this week after their walk through last week in Lincoln. (25) Michigan State hopes they are tired after they ran up and down the field so easily.
Somehow (14) Iowa keeps coming up with good players despite being the closest thing to the red wasteland to their west. They go to (19) Michigan who took out their anger at being embarrassed by Wisconsin on Rutgers. Michigan has not done well against ranked opponents and losing to Iowa may speed up the end of Harbaugh’s time in Ann Arbor.
We have a new verb for the job the Nebraska coach is doing following that great showing in the second half last week (after the Ohio State starters, second team, and parts of the third team had already showered.) Facing the depths of the Ohio State Roster they only lost the second half by 3 points. We call it Frosting which is appropriate since he is the top on college football’s biggest red cupcake. Northwestern (1-3) hasn’t had a lot of success this year but went toe to toe on the line of scrimmage with Wisconsin. It would be fun to see the fuskers fans explain a loss at home to the Wildcats.
Potential upset special in the B12 has (11) Texas visiting (3-1) West Virginia. Also (4-0) Baylor who barely escaped Iowa State last week after playing what should be the most pathetic non-conference schedule in the nation travels to Kansas State (3-1.)
PAC 12 has a very limited schedule. Outside the CU game the most interesting battle looks to be (4-1) Cal who dropped out of the rankings last week visiting (13) Oregon. PAC may also have the worst game on this weeks schedule pitting (1-3) Oregon State at (1-4) UCLA in the battle for the basement.
Locally the AFA (3-1)goes to Navy hoping to take the first step in returning the CIC trophy to Colorado Springs. Wyoming is off and CSU (1-3) may wish they were with a solid San Diego State (3-1) favored to lay another solid beating on the depleted flock of sheep.
Northern Colorado basking in the glow of a surprising first win of the season against Idaho visits Northern Arizona (2-3) looking to build some momentum.
In the local small colleges Colorado Mesa still has an outside chance to win the league if they can beat visiting Mines this weekend. Last week all of the top programs won. In addition to the Mines – Mesa game Pueblo plays at South Dakota Mines and surprising Adams State (3-1) plays at Fort Lewis.
