Outsiders perspective

This morning on my drive in the talking heads were focused on the Big 12 south. Being a UTE based market, their breakdown was from that perspective. For those of you in this market, (DJ and PK)

Paraphrasing their feedback:
Number six is Colorado. They regressed last year not winning a single in conference game. It is really painful to watch. When the QB through the interception to give away the Utah game, Macintyre looked like he was giving birth on the sidelines. Every other team in the division will go into next season ranked. No question they are last.

They ranked Utah in fifth and then I got to work and didn't listen anymore.

Probably a fair assessment except that Colorado only regressed recordwise. Over the season CU was a better team that didn't have the creampuffs from the prior year to build wins on.

Our division next year isn't likely to include any easy wins though so until we prove otherwise we should be predicted sixth.

We had exactly the same number of FBS level wins in 2014 as we did in 2013. We did not play 2 FCS teams that boosted our record the year prior. The no conference wins was disappointing and cannot happen again.

I think most outside perception of CU is that they are one of the worst teams in the country and have been irrelevant for a decade.... Which is correct. Where the outside perception falls short, IMO, is that nobody outside of die-hard Buff fans would ever think they had a top 40 offense with a top 20 passing offense. Some on these boards don't care for the moral victory of "progress" but progress is being made. However, the national perception remains that they won 2 games in '14 and that's how bad they are.

Outsider's perspective, guys. The means: Glance at the top line that shows CU won 4 in 2013 and won 2 in 2014 while finishing in last place both years and having fewer conference wins in 2014. QB Sefo threw a lot of INTs. Regression and... "I think we've got enough to fill a segment, producer."

The conference win we got the year before was against a Cal team that had completely fallen apart. That team probably would have lost to a lot of FCS teams that week so our timing was right. Somehow Dykes got them back and last year they were a different team when we played them.

Still not acceptable to go winless in conference but the win the year before was nothing special.

Fair, but still my point is the same. We cannot do it 2 years in a row.

Give it up. National folks who are non-fans and not Pac-12 people is who we're talking about for the outsider perspective. They don't give enough ****s to sit through an explanation of why a 2-win season was better than a 4-win season.

This is why I was arguing before last season that it was so important to win 5. Otherwise, no progress in terms of national perception.

Still yet, outsider's perspective also accounts for out of state recruits and easy talking points from other school's recruiters.

Well, all we need to do in 2015 is win 3-4 and we're on the up and up!

We're back in the Big 12?

The only perception that matters are those of recruits, season ticket holders and donors.

**** it. I am drinking in Oakland CA at Pacific Coast Brewing and thought I would throw out my $0.02 and it is not worth more than the paper coaster that is holding my freshly poured beer, which is a sour cherry tripel which was aged in a Maker's Mark Bourbon barrel.

Not really worried about the perceptions of the outsider. Why, they are ****ing outsiders. What they see is a team that won 2 games this year when we won 4 games last year. They see a team that lost to our little ****ing brother when we beat them the year before. What they see is a team that did not win a Pac 12 game when we did the year before.

What they are not mentioning and did not see is a team that did not quit in a game this year. What they did not see is a team that has been a horse **** team for a decade play close games and did not know how to finish. What they did not see was a team that pushed and fought two bowl teams to double over time. What they did not see was a team that played tougher than it has in 5 years both home and away.

I get the frustration over the lack of wins and lack of instant recruiting success. I get the desire to win the close games we should have this year. I get the pain of losing games that we dire hard fans were used to winning more than 10 years ago.

What these outsiders are missing is the process of this team getting better and the pain the program and fans have gone thru watching it. We were better this year. Were we good, god no. Will next year be better? Many will say no and there is little that an outsider and many insiders or die hard fans can point to when they ask the question. I will venture out on a limb and say there is. I see this program as being at the tipping point for taking a significant step.

The coaching is better than it has been here in more than a decade. Are there things that the coaching staff needs to prove and prove quickly? Yes there are. They need to win the games next year that they were close to and lost this last season. I think they will. Does the talent need to improve? Yes. This program cannot survive in this conference recruiting the way it has this year or last. Is there enough talent to get them over the hump to a winning season? I believe there is. Will that be enough to provide the staff, along with all of the other improvements that the AD is now providing like facilities, the jump they need to take recruiting to the next level? I do not know but we are about to find out in 2015.

Have we made progress? Yes we have. Is this the staff to take it to a winning season and further? Not sure but we are about to find out in 2015. This is a critical year and one that will have a great impact on CU football for the next 5 years. HCMM will either get it done this year and get over the hump or we will be taking a step backwards trying to get two steps forward with a new staff in 2016.

I am one that thinks he can get it done but we will find out in 2015. This is the time the jump has to be made or we need to find the guy who can make the jump.

Keep the faith as I said a month ago Mel Kiper on his national ESPN radio show had us #2 on his most improved list for next season. Mel looks at these teams for talent content so he is seeing something. And unlike the record gazers, Mel watches the games, and the players.

We are now pinning our hopes on Mel Kiper's analysis!!!

I don't know about the rest of you, but my hope is heavily diluted with cynicism. Mel isn't convincing me of anything. Same stance for 2015 that I've had since 2008: Optimistic pragmatism. Hope we will be good, but know we probably won't be good.

Not bad for a drunk's post. I agree.
