| BOULDER – Senior Brian Owens and junior Emily Hunsucker led the University of Colorado in the javelin and hammer throws, respectively, on the first day of the Colorado Invitational on Friday afternoon at Potts Field. Owens won the javelin with a season-best mark of 202 feet and four inches, recording the throw on his fifth attempt of the series. It is the first time he has thrown past 200 feet since returning from Tommy John surgery last year. “This is close to Brian’s PR minus a UCL in his elbow; so to throw the distances that he has been throwing have been really miraculous,” assistant coach Casey Malone said. “His performance today was exceptional. Throwing into the headwind the way he was, the cold conditions, and to throw over 60 meters was really fun to see.” Hunsucker was the top performer in the hammer throw, launching a mark of 197-4 in her third toss of the day. The throw was just four inches shy of her school record (197-8), which she set two weeks ago at the Fum McGraw Quadrangular in Fort Collins, Colo. "Emily had a great performance today and although she did not break the school record again, she was very close,” Malone said. “She had a very consistent series today in spite of working on some new technical goals this week. Emily improved on each throw in prelims, threw 59 meters on her first throw in finals, then went after it and had a couple fouls at the end. That level of performance will get Emily into scoring range at Pac-12's and there is still more there." Brock Emory also did well in the javelin, finishing second to Owens with a mark of 148-0. On the women’s side, Abrianna Torres placed second in the javelin with a throw of 123-0. Kajsa Bank took fourth overall with a personal best of 111-4. The second and final day of the Colorado Invitational is Saturday.
