Jon Wilner

One of two breaks from college football this week on the Hotline, with the other (in the next 24-48 hours) being my Associated Press preseason top-25 ballot. I’m also planning a realignment update — plenty happening on that front, as usual. The Pac-12 preseason basketball poll will be released Friday in conjunction with the league’s [...]

Wilner has us 10th. Higher than most have so far, but he's still going to be wrong.

The middle really is just kind of a mess that could turn out in any different number of ways. Personally, I think it's broken in to four groupings:

Top Tier: Arizona, Cal, UCLA, Washington
Just Below: Oregon
Middle: Arizona State, Colorado, Oregon State, Stanford
Bottom: USC, Utah, Washington State

Oregon State 7, LOL. They get pounded at home by a Montana State or Seattle multiple times every year.

Still going to believe the Oregon hype when I see it

Not sure what to make of Arizona State

Why is Stanford so high? I saw them last year play Virginia at home, and I was not impressed at all. Did they pick up a bunch of new guys? or were guys hurt last year? I thought that they were senior heavy, but I could have been mistaken, either way, I was more impressed with the band director.

Thorburn posted his Pac-12 vote on his blog.

1.) Arizona
2.) UCLA
3.) Cal
4.) Washington
5.) Oregon
6.) Stanford
7.) Colorado
8.) Arizona State
9.) Oregon State
10.) Washington State
11.) USC
12.) Utah

My thoughts exactly. There are some minor squibbles I have with it (the top 3 isn't in the order I'd go with specifically), but overall it seems right on.

Yahoo posted their Pac 12 preview today.

Seems like this guy didn't do much research. Its really not much of a preview at all, but I'm starving for basketball news. The only thing mentioned about Colorado:

"About the only certainty in the Pac-12 is that the conference's newest members seem likely to struggle. Colorado lost its top four scorers off last season's NIT team, including first-round pick Alec Burks, while undermanned Utah faces a multi-year rebuilding project under new coach Larry Krystkowiak."

I love it. LOVE it. I want them circling the wagons and I want an "us against the world" mentality.

I'm curious why Washington isn't downgraded more. They lost their top 3 scorers, a ton of rebounding and a ton of assists. They look like a team of 3 point shooters with Aziz N'Diaye in the middle for defense and rebounding. I think they could take a major step back this year.

Tony Wroten is the main reason I refuse to write them off.

Like Goose said, a lot of it has to do with Tony Wroten. Tone may be the best PSA to ever sign with Washington (easily the most hyped, as Seattle fans have been following his progress since his 8th grade), and he is probably already the best passer in the college game, no joke. Before his high school injury he was the top rated player in the country in his class. Besides him, the other freshman are no slouches either...

Washington right now is all about potential. They probably (on paper) have as much or more talent than any prior team in Washington history. I'm not saying that lightly. Simply put, the incoming guys have a much higher ceiling than the outgoing guys. But half of the team are freshman (6 true frosh this year although Andrews will be redshirted). How they play will be anyone's guess at this point, but they are very talented. If they pull it together they will quite possibly win the conference and conference tourney. If they don't gel then they could slide to the middle of the conference. Right now I'd put them at #3 to #4. Again, right now it's all about potential with this Husky squad.

The backcourt averages about 6'5" in height. They are a much taller, longer and more athletic team than Romar has had before. This will make the Husky D even better. At this point Romar is in his 10th year coaching at UW and he is simply reloading the talent. Expect Washington under Romar to make the tourney more often than not, and be consistently near the top of the conference...
